We're on cloud nine

Wednesday 27th November 2019

Written by Katie Carew-Robinson (she/her)

Another bumper GG Portsmouth run tonight, it's great to be consistently getting over 20 pairs of enthusiastic hands helping out local organisations and it puts my memory to a massive test trying to remember all the news to put in the run report!!

Congratulations to all these runners:

  • Ellie for running her furthest run with us tonight and still looking fresh at the end!
  • Lynn who noticed her improved fitness meaning she can now run all the way to the task without walk breaks.
  • Val who completed her 50th good deed at the weekend and found herself top of the heroes board with cheers from all corners of the GoodGym nation!
  • Judy who was sporting a brand new t-shirt tonight (brave as there was painting involved!)
  • Lucy who ran a MASSIVE PB at the Gosport half marathon
  • Angela who's on the road to recovery from her injury

Tonight's task

After a run down to the Groundlings Theatre (without the ability to cut through Victoria Park) we found Richard and a dance rehearsal. His first question was who wants to jigsaw, Judy volunteered herself and then realised that she wasn't going to be sitting down to put a 1000 piece back together so passed the baton to Duncan and Tim who were whisked away into a side room to cut out clouds! Everyone else negotiated the dancers and headed for the stage (so many performers...). Jen was quick to volunteer for the screwing job (So. Many. Puns.) and Rosie was wielding a dustpan and brush to sweep the stage. There was cloud painting, skirt stapling, stage painting and plenty of laughter as always.

We managed to do quite a lot in the time we were there - that's the beauty of many hands, well done everyone.

If you'd like to see your bit of scenery in action, check out the Groundlings website and book yourself a panto ticket.

Christmas is coming

In case you hadn't noticed, it's December on Sunday (and there are 2 community missions that day too) so for the final three Wednesday night group runs of the year we greatly encourage dressing up in your best festive running gear and Christmas hats. Next week we will be decorating Santa's grotto - one not to be missed for fans of festivity! It is outside though so please bring a headtorch and warm gear.

We also have a couple of Christmas community missions - accompanying Santa's sleigh around Baffins on Friday 6th and Monday 9th December.

Ho ho hope you have a great week of running, see you at a GoodGym happening soon!

At a variety of different times over the week, runners from GoodGym Portsmouth have delivered panto leaflets for the Groundlings Theatre. We have covered just about every shopping and cafe area in the city so if you come across somewhere without any leaflets, let us know!!

FE FI FO [Painting] FUN!

Saturday 19th October 2019

Written by Rachel Cutler

12 GoodGym-ers came together on a Saturday morning to provide some extra pairs of hands for the Groundlings theatre following the recent break-in.

We were happy to help out with one of our favourite tasks, painting! Instead of the usual walls and benches, our more artistic skills were put to the test to help produce the some of the stage props; a lovely mix of clouds, leaves and rainbows!

We split up into two main groups; there was a production line cutting, shaping and painting the green leaves (for the magic beanstalk perhaps?), and those with the more advanced painting skills took on the rainbows (red-and-orange-and-yellow-and-green-and-blue!) and the fluffy clouds.

After running out of drying space on the floor, and paint-free areas on our fingers, we left to rest up ahead of the running/ cheering/ recycling at the Great South Run on Sunday.

See you soon Groundlings, we are keen come back for the panto! (oh yes we are!)

Jack and the Beanstalk runs from 4th December to 5th January :-)

Ply Drama

Tuesday 15th October 2019

Written by Katie Carew-Robinson (she/her)

Top Tuesday Task!

Well, I'm now totally confused and I think it's Wednesday... Hope I remember to turn up to GoodGym tomorrow haha!

Welcome to Molly and Lynn who both joined us for their first experience of GoodGym. Hope you enjoyed yourselves!

We were set to work in the outside area, sorting out burnable "real" wood and non-burnable plywood into 2 separate piles to be picked up later in the week. There were some great finds in the shed... a massive picture frame, a small cart and 2 tennis balls.

The other job was one that seemed simple but was trickier than at first glance... It was separating the plywood from some staging blocks... Ditching the plywood and saving the blocks underneath for reuse in some performances later in the year. Jen demonstrated her midwifery contortionist skills, Val wielded a hammer and Lucy made use of her walking boots.

Yet again we proved that many hands make light work as we got through the task in less time than we had allocated so most of us were home in time for Bake Off!

On Saturday we're back at the theatre, this time for some set painting and possibly sawing! Sign up here if you're interested in lending a hand.
