Val Cameron

It's great to combine doing good in the community whilst exercising, and having a lot of fun with like minded people. You don't have to be a fast runner to join, you can be a slow runner, a jogger or even a walker, as I am.

Himalayan Balsam bashing on Hob Moor

Mon 21 Jun 18:30 pm
Little Hob Moor, Bottom of the path, York, YO24 1DY
Help local volunteers to keep on top of this invasive plant

It’s this time of year when the Himalayan Balsam grows rapidly, smothering other vegetation as it goes. Friends of Hob Moor have asked for our help with eradication of the plant aka ‘balsam bashing’ from the woodland on the eastern side of the Moor. The plant is about knee high at this moment, but in few weeks’ time it will reach overhead height and start producing seeds. By removing as much of the balsam as possible now we will provide space and light for other native plants to grow.

Please bring your gardening gloves.

There are a lot of nettles and wearing long trousers is recommended.

Meet on the grass, by the yellow barrier at the entrance to the tunnel. https://what3words.com/float.juror.liver

There is a 200m long ascent with Strava segment between the tunnel and Hob Stone . We will use it for a 20 min long hill reps session after the task. Following the warm-up we will run, or walk up the hill in single file, then jog, or walk back towards the tunnel to recover before making another attempt. Everyone will run, or walk at their own pace with an option to race someone uphill if you want. Hill training is a great way to improve elements of good running form. It engages a high percentage of muscle fibres, leading to increased muscular power. It strengthens muscles around the knee. Uphill running puts more emphasis on calves, hamstrings and glutes, while downhill running puts more emphasis on the quadriceps.

Himalayan Balsam bashing on Hob Moor

Mon 21 Jun 18:15 pm
York CVS, Denham Room, 15 Priory Street , York , YO1 6ET

Please note that this group run has been cancelled.

Help local volunteers to keep on top of this invasive plant

Welcome to GoodGym York!

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. Every Monday we meet to get active and do a physical task to help the charities or community organisations in our city.

WHERE WE MEET

We meet at the Priory Street Centre and our usual room is the Denham Room. As you approach the front of the Centre, turn right and go to the car park area. The room we use is locked whilst we're out so you can leave your bits and bobs in there. To limit the number of people entering the building two/three people will be taking all belongings inside whilst everyone else stays outside. 10 bay pay and display car park is available behind the nursery block, to the left as you approach front of the Centre. In addition on street parking is available on Priory Street.

RUNNING AND WALKING WITH US

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and if the task is close enough we have a walking group too. It's possible to walk to this task (about 1.8km each way) but walkers will leave at 18:25 promptly so please arrive in plenty of time.

Please let me know if you plan to walk.

We always have a back-marker too so nobody will get left behind - no matter what your pace is.

We will do a short hill reps session on the way back from the task.

POST-RUN SOCIAL

We will head to The Golden Ball on Cromwell Road after our run for a spot of liquid refreshment and a good chat. Please join us!

Whatever the weather, we will wade through the waves to wallow in the warm, or not-so-warm, water. Wait for the whoops and the wails! It's worth it for your wellbeing, or just for a wash!

Don't just watch in wonderment!

Whether you wear wetsuits, woolly hats, waders, or wellies: everyone is welcome!

Pocket Rocket

Wed 9 Jun
Report written by Katie Carew-Robinson

Welcome to one of the lesser known green spaces in Pompey!

Ami has lived in Portsmouth less than a year & already found out where this is and the back road cycle routes to get there too. Sinéad and Rachel also used pedal power with extra power required for the railway bridges!

The pitches weren't actually too littered except for one picnic on the cricket pitch which had just been left...

Interesting finds... Val spotted a rocket (we're guessing it wasn't a leftover from November but who knows?). Ami found 2 odd socks 🧦 Jen found a mini frying pan and some lego. Judy brought along our GG mascot Tess who helped her with bottle spotting as usual.

A lovely summer's evening with a few thank yous from members of the public, what a nice way to spend a Wednesday!
