Getting there

For this session we're going to meet at the task, so you'll need to make your own way there. We encourage you to walk, run, or cycle to do so!

    About this session

You are registered on this group if you are interested in what’s happening at the Tiny Forest Barnet.

I will send out emails every so often to remind you about what is happening.

If you want to know more or seek clarification please ring me on (07768) 353108.

Planting completed on the 24th of February with the help of Earthwatch, Barnet Council and most importantly lots of local people. On again on the 26th March 2025 3 more experimental tiny forests were planted. Three different techniques and different plant types used.

Thank you to those who have helped support the Tiny Forest creation. Now it’s time to nurture and study how the trees grow. using citizen science uploading data to Earthwatch.

This will involve regular activities through the calendar year. Looking to engage the local community with citizen science and other environmental activities.

The location is Henlys corner junction of A406 and the Finchley Road

Here is a precise what3words address,

A Tiny Forest is a dense and rapidly growing native woodland in a small area. It will provide a protected habitat for wildlife, capture carbon, filter the air of harmful particulates and reduce flooding and soil loss.

Besides these important local effects, it is symbolic of our need to protect our wider environment and it is hoped it will provide an education and emotional engagement of our community. It’s also something that we will have to physically nurture as a group. Its a great fit for Goodgym!

These initiatives are gaining popularity across the UK, with organisations like EarthWatch and The Conservation Volunteers getting involved.

If you have ideas about how to promote this planting to the community please also get in touch. We want schools, community groups, artisans, news media and others to get involved.

Thanks to Daniel Mermelstein for introducing the idea to Goodgym Barnet.

Come this Sunday from 2.30 (8th Feb )say hello see the site. Let’s talk about planting and caring for our local environment. Bring a friend you don’t need to be a GG member. https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/environmental-project-preparation-and-visit-to-the-tiny-forest-site-77301e34-bfb8-4851-9080-b32a60e8e037 2. Get involved with tree keeping ( on going care) As you know, we're gearing up to plant a Tiny Forest near Mutton Brook (https://what3words.com/went.give.torn) on February 24th. That will be 600 trees! But after we're done on the day, the Tiny Forest will need lots of TLC. That is what Tree Keepers are for! Earthwatch has put together the attached flier about what being a Tree Keeper entails (basically a bit of litter picking, weeding and taking measurements for scientific research, among other fun things to keep you out and about!) and why it is such an important role. Hopefully some of you will be interested in joining us as tree keepers of the Tiny Forest at Mutton Brook. If you think this is of interest, Earthwarch are also organising an introductory webinar about it next week. It is open to all. Thank you for signing up to support a tiny Forest in Barnet. Your enthusiasm to signup was an important motivation for getting the council to engage with the idea .One of the most environmentally friendly things you can do in your own backyard. After over a year it will finally happen, unfortunately it is on a weekday, when most people will struggle to attend. If there is any chance you can attend it is tomorrow please see link to sign up. https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/tiny-forest-tree-planting-confirmed If you want to come and see it we will be visiting in the evening for a group run please see a link. https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/tiny-forest-barnet-henley-s-corner thanks again and if I can help in any way to support this anywhere else in the uk please get in touch. Keep moving and doing good!

Barnet GoodGym’s Tiny Forests Are Growing! Thanks to everyone who helped plant over 1,800 trees — what a day! Read the full report here https://www.goodgym.org/v3/reports/wood-you-believe-it-1-800-new-trees-planted This is just the beginning — Barnet now has four Tiny Forests, and over the next couple of years, we’ll be supporting citizen science activities to help track how they grow and thrive. It’s a great way to connect with the environment and the local community — and it can be done in your own time. More details and missions coming soon! Interested in getting involved? https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/barnet-environmental-project-micro-forest?legacy=true Email: tinyforestbarnet@gmail.com (Or share with friends, especially families who’d love to learn more about nature.) Let’s keep making Barnet greener, together!

Hi all — we’re supporting a free Tiny Forest film screening as part of London Climate Action Week. It’s on Wednesday 24 June, 7–9pm, in East Finchley. You can come along to watch the film and, if needed, help with light welcoming/stewarding on the night. A lovely way to learn more about Tiny Forests and support Earthwatch/GoodGym Barnet’s work locally. Sign up here: https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/film-screening-for-the-tiny-forest
