GoodGym members joined forces with local residents for a satisfying morning of churchyard graft at St Mary-at-Finchley, the oldest building in Finchley, with parts dating back to the 12th century.
This was no ordinary tidy-up. The churchyard is packed with local history, and our task was to help protect it. We worked on the western side near the tower, clearing overgrowth, tackling stubborn roots, cutting back ivy and snowberry, and helping free up gravestones that were being slowly swallowed by vegetation.
It was great to see a healthy turnout, with GoodGym Barnet members and community volunteers all mucking in. Bit by bit, the area started to open up again, revealing memorials that had been hidden and making the churchyard feel more cared for, more visible and more respectful.
And this site really does matter. Among the memorials are Grade II listed gravestones, including the tomb of John Cartwright a significant figure in British political reform. Cartwright campaigned for fairer representation and wider voting rights, and his ideas fed into the long road towards universal suffrage. He also supported the principles behind American independence, so this quiet Finchley churchyard has connections to some very big democratic ideas.
So there we were: cutting roots, hauling back branches, tidying the past, and giving history a bit more breathing space.
A lovely community mission in a beautiful and important setting practical, purposeful, and full of local character.

Once again, Goodgym was out helping our favourite cultural institution, the Phoenix Cinema, reach audiences and keep going. Tonight, however, we had an extra batch of leaflets from the artsdepot in North Finchley, who are also trying to boost numbers. By chance we met their team in the Phoenix last week and offered to piggy back their leaflets on this session.
And, with another great turn out - eight of us! - we made short work of their programmes. With the weather picking up, we had regulars and newcomers. Great to see Sheela for her first session, after she joined us at last week's allotment session as part of her charity work. And welcome back to Theo, who cycled all the way from Queen's Park, over Hampstead Hill!
Rachel set a fun but tricky topic for us to chat about: name something you used to believe was true, but don't any longer. A couple of us came up with food-related topics that we thought were healthy, like Theodore, who shared the fun fact that frozen-then-defrosted bread is easier to digest that fresh bread.
And then we were off, running a bit further than usual towards Muswell Hill to try and reach some new audiences, with Paul backmarking (sadly no Gus with him). We made short work of our leaflets running around some very nice houses. Jacqui snapped some action pics for us on route. Then, twenty minutes later, with no leaflets left, everyone 'collectively and democratically' agreed to let me choose whether we did more hard exercises or a gentler run. Obviously everyone was up for another sprinting session on the hill path into Highgate Wood, where most of us suitably burned off excess energy, except Subham, who has a bottomless store and led the way back to the cinema, while some of us walked or jogged the last stretch.
Then we all huddled around the tables in the Phoenix for a little social, exercising our 10% Goodgym discount. A lovely close to the evening, and a solid 4km route as well.

Our first balmy weather of the year brought a friendly group of six Goodgymmers together for a session at Shepherds Hill Gardens. Four of us set off from the Phoenix, with Theo rocking up just in time to set off as our fifth for the 3km run.
The run had us dodging tree roots, leaping over dogs, swerving around pedestrians and somersaulting cars. (Well, not really, but I'm trying to earn the pun in this report title. We were SUPER-safe and observant the whole way.)
Rescheduled from earlier in the year, we were glad to see Pat fighting fit and - bless her indomitable kindness - already prepping refreshments! We got stuck in with brooms and rakes, clearing leaves at the top of the Gardens. Working in pairs, we swept the paths and benches, scooped up the green waste and carried it down to the dead hedges and piles in the wood.
Then we settled at a bench for biscuits, hot chocolate, fresh mint tea and a special treat just for the vegan among us (me!): samosas. Though within moments we had a new vegan signed up to a plant-based dietary regime for the rest of his life - well done Paul! (I'm sure he wasn't just after a samosa.) We also spotted some violets along the wall by the path - lovely early signs of spring.
Tonight's question was: which actor, living or dead, would you like to play you in the biopic of your life? Here's a 'match the actor to the Goodgymmer' quiz:
GGers George / Paul / Subham / Jack / Lucy / Theo
Actors El Vez / Angelina Jolie / Jonny Depp / Philip Seymour Hoffman / Robert Redford / Jack Nicholson

On a crisp winter evening, GoodGym Barnet met at the Phoenix Cinema before a sociable 2km run to the local gem that is Stephens House & Gardens — the beautiful 1870s Italianate house set within its much-loved pocket park.
Our task was to polish the house’s unique original pine staircase, crafted from timber believed to be over 300 years old. Armed with beeswax and cloths, we spread ourselves along the steps, carefully feeding the wood and bringing it back to life. It was warm, satisfying work — and a meaningful way to help reduce maintenance costs for the charity. Mel p advised us how to work with beeswax and cloths.
Some runners joined us at the house, and we were very kindly rewarded with tea and coffee before heading back to the Phoenix.
Stephens House is a real Barnet treasure, hosting everything from Sunday lunches and seasonal fairs to exhibitions and summer theatre. Do support them — whether by volunteering, attending events or visiting the café.
Huge congratulations to Subham on his 50th good deed 👏 and Gavin on his first GoodGym run. Give him a cheer.. Great to see Scarlett, and lovely to welcome visitors Theo and Peter Hale.
Thanks to everyone who came along to support this fantastic park and house!

For our first indoor session of winter (I know right?!), Barnet Goodgym brought their energy and gusto to St Mary's Church in Finchley Central. Following a bit of a storm, a ceiling cave in and half a year of rain management, the church finally had the gutters fixed and roof patched. All that remains to mend are the pews.
Goodgym to rescue - nine of us in all! Five of us braved the bleak rain, gathering at the Phoenix - Beattie arriving first, as usual - for a run up the East End Road, including Amir who popped over from Brent. Lucinda and Subham took up back marking, though Subham kindly took the lead as we neared our destination, steering us to a lovely car-free route around the back of Stephens House - a run leader in the making!
Arriving at St Mary's Church in good time, we were met by our host, Helen, and Paul, Kirsten and our honorary mascot, Gus. Soon after Amanda and Theodore rocked up and we got to work.
The task involved waxing down damaged pews with steel wool padding, leaving them for a few minutes, then polishing them hard with tea towels. A fairly simple task, but one that turned into a good work out. The polishing was the real energetic work, requiring a lot of pressure to smooth out the hardening wax. But with so many of us we made light work of roughly 8 pews in the morning prayer section. The pews are used on a daily basis, so they were really glad for the work.
After, Helen gave us a quick tour of the church and a brief history of some of the older parts and decorations. Maybe we'll be back to do a bit more work, as the other pews might be in need of a bit of TLC anyway.
Then, with that lovely, satisfying feeling in our chests, we headed to the nearby pub to round the evening off by slaking our thirst and sating our bellies.

The guided tour was an extra bonus! Thanks to Helen.. and well done for braving the torrential rain!

Three of us gathered for a session, this time mostly on top ropes. Beattie has climbed a lot in the past, but not for a while. It was Theodore's first time climbing in the UK and second climb ever. So we had a gentle go on the ropes, followed by a bit of bouldering.
A helpful receptionist told me I can bring five free first timers every month because I'm a member, which is great!
