Goodgym at the Oasis....send your camel to bed

Thursday 20th July 2023

Written by Michael

Another last minute change to task this week, due to some unfortunate circumstances. However, we were able to pick up the cancelled task from last week instead and get out on those streets pounding the pavement!

We met at Daffodil as we would do on our usual Tuesday's, and then made our way over to Oasis - supplying a warm Welsh welcome for Refugees and Asylum Seekers, and the task to put out flyers to let the locals know about the new STREET FOOD LUNCH SERVICE The Plate project serves a choice of lunches from around the globe to the streets of Splott.

A good split today, with some of us jogging to the task, some cycling to meet us there and an extra couple meetings at the task.

Off we set, to get out and do some good

We hadn't been to Oasis for a while, so as we waited for others to arrive, we had a lovely look around. There was now a new pond and planting to look at. Once everyone had arrived, we did things a bit backwards today, with our group photo first.

Enter the CAMEL

Once we hit the streets with our flyers, we would be splitting up for a while, regrouping, and then finishing the flyering on the way back to the Daffodil. So, no time for group photos in this!

We hope that they see new customers at the food truck, join us next week as we get back to our usual Tuesday tasks - sign up here

Giving nature a helping hand

Saturday 23rd April 2022

Written by Karolina

It was meant to be one of those weeding tasks which good gym loves and for the most part it was.

Mike, Estelle, Emily and Karolina got on just fine with weeding the ground until Karolina decided to move a shrub out of the way. This would mean trimming and lifting the lovely shrub out of the ground!

As her plans became apparent, the three good gymmers conceived a counter plan. Instead of moving it, they have proposed to tie up the shrub. After a few trials, the task was completed and the shrub was saved.

They finished the task off with a group photo and off they went to enjoy their Saturday.

Harping around

Tuesday 22nd March 2022

Written by Michael

Tonight we had an opportunity to get a good run in for our task, SEVEN goodgym volunteers met to take to the streets and distribute flyers for Oasis.

Catrin Finch, from Llanon on the west coast of Wales, is the most gifted classical harp virtuoso of her generation, grounded in prodigious early achievements and intense classical training, and serving as Royal Harpist to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales in her early twenties. Catrin has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras; she has also achieved chart success with her number 1 rendition of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, and has recorded for the world’s leading classical labels.

After Catrin had heard about the support that Oasis offer refugees and asylum seekers in Wales, she kindly offered to run a fundraiser event for them. Oasis Cardiff and Oasis One World Choir are honoured to invite Catrin to The Gate for a performance for the local and wider community.

We all met outside our usual start / end location - Sport Wales National Centre, and enjoying the sunshine and the fact that we were starting in the light we made our way through the local park. Over Bridges, up steps, it was a nice workout making our way to the Gate (A lovely community Centre for varied performances and art exhibitions). A quick photo check and time to split up the leaflets, runners all heading off in different directions to look work up some encouragement for what looks to be a great event.

Once all the flyers were gone, we got together and made our way back. This time we had to head through town, making our final run a little longer - but that's the point of our Tuesdays, active travel, volunteering and fun with friends.

Come join us next week!

There is always plan B

Monday 4th October 2021

Written by Karolina

Two good gymmers signed up for a Monday mission at Oasis Cardiff and were blessed with the weather.

The task was already postponed once due to the torrential rain last Saturday, but for 1 hour the sky was clear so off they went.

They were welcomed by Steve and Share who are very chatty and eager to learn about members of the good gym and the mammoth task at hand: moving the raised beds. They soon realized it would take a miracle for Karolina and Estelle to do it on their own. But, determined to do good they have came up with a plan B: clearing the garden and the boarders of rubbish and weeds. That's exactly what went off to do and finished off with one of the most cute tasks of all: refilling a bird feeder.

Happy with their completed plan B, they took a photo in front of a shiny new sign at Oasis and parted separate ways home.

Another hot day in the Oasis

Tuesday 7th September 2021

Written by Michael

It was time for our longer run this month, not to be put off 12 goodgymers got together at our meeting point at Sport Wales National Centre. We split into our two groups with the 5 walk / joggers heading out first to tackle the 3.5 km to Oasis whilst the 7 runners took a slightly different route through the park.

It was a hot day for this run, but we chatted all the way and made it in good time to meet up with our regular goodgymer Karolina, who today donned her Oasis hat.

We kept hydrated with some water and had a look around.

It had changed since the last time we had helped here with some new planters, trellis, and even more planting. Today there was some painting of the new planters and old sign, watering, general tidying up.

Oh, wait here come the walk / joggers to join in. Everyone got stuck in with their chosen tasks and we even had opportunities to chat to Karolina about some of the plants that were around the gardens.

The 30 minutes flew by so fast that we were nearly late leaving, just enough time for a quick group photo before heading back and popping out for some food and a bit of a social.

Always great times with this team.

We travelled through the heat, to get to our Oasis

Tuesday 20th July 2021

Written by Michael

The long anticipated RETURN of the GROUP missions.

After 16 months of waiting patiently it was time to welcome back the groups, in one of our new outside locations at Sport Wales National Arena. With the Heat belting down, it was the shade for us, so Michael met 11 avid goodgymers ready to take on the challenge of making their way through the sweating streets of Cardiff.

Today was not a day for pre run games as we wanted to survive the run, so we split into our two groups the walk / joggers and the runners and made our way. As we ran, we surveyed the area ahead of us for any kind of shade as we meandered to our task through the streets radiating even more heat.

Is it much farther????? Oasis ahoy..

We arrived at our task, and what a joy it was to behold. There was a large shaded gazeebo with chairs, ready to rest our weary legs. A few of us had spent the weekend running at a race in Dorset - The Cider Frolic, so a quick rest was very much welcomed. Once the second group arrived it was time to get to work.......

Today's Task
Water the plants, at the base so as not to burn the leaves.
Cut back an overgrown Ivy, to gain access to the outside stairs.
Litter pick any rubbish also in the vegetation.
Chat to each and every one of the groups.
Enjoy the return of group tasks.
Decide if you are joining the group for a drink after the return trip.
Okay, so the last three were not really task related, but equally important on our first group back I feel.

Before we knew it, our time at Oasis was coming to an end, but just enough left to wander with our resident goodgymer Karolina who looks after the space in her spare time, and to hear about the work that had gone on plus the food they had already grown and used in the kitchens. And of course, ending with our Group Photo.

We mixed up the running pairs on the return trip and continued to talk about what we had been up to, any training that we were doing and how life was feeling for us at the moment. As BT would say.........'It's good to talk'.

With a quick stretch to cool down, we said our goodbyes to those not going to the pub and then made our way for even more chatting and catching up.

Until next week.....
