Shedding wisdom

Southwark Report written by Southwark runner

Last night for our group run, we went to a block of flats in Kennington Park Road, to help the community there with their garden.

Firstly, we met at Old Spike which was the start of our run. We welcomed some newbies Diana, Sam and Nancy. Then after a quick warm up, we split into two groups and set off to Kennington at two different paces. Daryl's group were first to arrive, also meeting them there was James, Lindy and Richard. They all got stuck in the the first task, which was to move a shed. Diana, Nelly and I joined after. We all were given a variety of different tasks: moving soil, assembling furniture, trimming bushes and raking leaves.

Sandy and the rest of the TRA were really happy to have us. We made a big difference in the short amount of time. Well done all!

💚💚💚 GoodGym X Earthfest! Mission Compostible! 🌳🌳🌳

Camden Report written by Alex Murtough (he/him)

7 GoodGymers visited Camden's secret community allotments for an impactful (nature-bound) workout!!!

GoodGym teamed up with the lovely folk at EarthFest for this special session.

Earthfest is London's ultimate festival of sustainability, and we spent yesterday making an active difference in one special spot of nature!

Steve, Abigail (on their first good deed – welcome!), and I met at a very wet Earthfest, and we quickly headed out into the rain for a gentle 2 mile run through Camden Town.

Arriving 30 minutes later at Adelaide Community Allotments in Primrose Hill, we met up with the lovely group of Imogen, Majid, Natalia, and Richard, and our brilliant host Jeff directed us to our task for the next hour.

The Adelaide Allotments have been serving the local community for 50 years, and they're a bountiful collection of budding plots, each growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Our mission was to empty one of Adelaide's four compost heaps, which month-by-month had been breaking down into healthy fertiliser.

Over the next 60 minutes, our active group turned a task into an efficient human chain – they paired up and rotated between shoveling, wheelbarrowing, and bagging – and all while sharing stories and connecting :)

This group of 7 made easy work of the heap, and they left over 20 bags of compost, all of which will head straight back into the allotments – sustainable recycling in action ☺️

Thank you, everyone, and here's to next time!!

Close to the (h)edge

Camden Report written by John Shirley

Lismore Circus Community Woods is an urban space in Gospel Oak, staffed by volunteers, which is where we come in. They can always do with some extra help and there were ten of us!

First we had to move a fallen tree. Then we set to work on the hedges, which were growing over footpaths and a cycle path, and were generally looking rather untidy. Fancying ourselves as skilled hairdressers, we thought about working on perms, wedges, buns, braids, and mullets, but in the end just made some nice fringes.

By the time we’d finished, the paths were free of overhanging and overgrown foliage, and the hedges were cut back to leave a proper edge to the path.

A special welcome to Victoria, who we’d previously met at Hampstead ParkRun, and was here for her first ever good deed! See you again soon Victoria.

Shoe-per troopers

Westminster Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Last night’s session took us back to one of our favourite places – the incredible St Andrew’s Club in Westminster, which is the oldest youth club in the world. It has been serving the local community since 1866, and is truly special place for so many young people. The club offers every activity imaginable, from music to karate, healthy cookery to screen printing.

It was brilliant to see some new faces join the session – a big warm welcome to Monica, India and Chris! There were two main areas to tackle so we split into teams and got to work.

The first team took on a room packed with musical instruments and kit. From keyboards to amps, mics to mixing desks, the room needed a reshuffle. Lifting, shifting, stacking, and sorting – it was a full-body workout but by the end, the space was transformed and ready for young creatives to make some noise again.

Meanwhile, the other team tackled a room brimming with hundreds of pairs of shoes – all in boxes, all in need of sorting. Thankfully, our dream team included a former children’s shoe salesperson, an expert in prosthetics fitting, and a fashion retail expert – so we were qualified for the task! After 45 minutes of teamwork and sorting, there was a lot more space to use.

With time left for a cardio and conditioning session, we wrapped up the evening with a short but intense blast. Everyone showed amazing form, especially during the brutal mountain climbers and our ski jump finisher. Huge effort all round!

Thanks again to everyone who came. Next week we’ll be out distributing food to rough sleepers and we’d love to have you with us. Hope to see you then!

In a bit of a bind

Tower Hamlets Report written by Laura Williams

17 GoodGymers spent their Monday evening helping out at the Prospect Walk Allotments just off Meath Gardens.

The task, led by longstanding task owner Catherine (and supported by Des and Liam) was straightforward but much needed: clearing bindweed from fences and cutting back overgrown trees and weeds that had started to take over the borders.

With private gardens often limited locally, allotments are a great asset for locals, but keeping them usable and accessible takes ongoing effort, so it was good to come and lend a hand with the weeding and pruning of the communal areas tonight.

Armed with gloves and tools, the group made a start, unravelling the long vines and clearing the way for light to reach the plots. (Bindweed's spread across large sections of the site, particularly along the fencing, where it tends to cling tightly and block out sunlight).

The team also pruned tree branches, including the wonderfully-named Heavenly Tree, and removed other fast-growing weeds that tend to creep in when left unchecked.

Working for just over an hour, the GoodGymers covered a great section of the site.

At just after 8 we posed for our final pic and made plans to return to a similar task a few doors down next month! A great night with a good turnout (and a big welcome to Nancy, who joined for her first GoodGym session!).

Until next time.
