Getting on like a (Charlton) House on fire!

Greenwich Report written by Sarah Place

32 awesome runners ran 7km to sweep leaves, pick up litter, clean windows and flyer for Charlton House!

What a beautiful evening it turned out to be! Quite warm, yes, but lovely nonetheless. It was Mridula's 50th good deed last night and we suspect she might even have been the fastest person ever to have reached 50! Isn't she AMAZING!!!

We were joined by a fair few new faces last night which is GREAT! Please welcome Matt W, Tina, Stephen and Corrazo to the squad!! Give them all a cheer!

After talking about what we had for lunch for 10 minutes we went a did a little warm up consisting of a few lunges, squats etc and a little run around pretending to be flamingos on one leg :) A few minutes later and we were good to go!

We split into two groups. Ben C took the lead and headed off through the park with his speedy gang. The other half of us took it a little easier, although the hill never seems to get any easier does it!! But once again, you all smashed it, and it must be helping, since Mridula did hill repeats in Hilly Fields with GG Lewisham on Monday and said it was a piece of cake compared to our hill so the training must be paying off!!!

Our group had a well deserved rest at the top, we took a lovely photo under the tree and then cracked on towards Charlton.

We arrived and group 1 had already started working hard. Alex, Steve, and Matt G ran off to deliver some leaflets whilst everyone else had a bin bag in hand going round picking up litter. Unfortunately, there wasn't a huge amount of equipment but thankfully you're all a bunch of superstars and just mucked in regardless. Everyone buddied up to clear as much litter as possible. Linda armed herself with the broom to sweep the leaves off the path whilst other people cleaned the windows. According to Clare, they were actually making the windows worse... but I don't believe that for one second!

3, 2, 1... GO!!!

At just after 8 o'clock, the boys returned from their flyering duty and everyone else had finished their jobs. Mridula had of course collected the most litter because she is the best at everything! We put the bin bags inside and brought everyone together for a quick little relay! We split into boys and girls in attempt to make the teams relatively evenly weighted. Teams 1 and 2 lined up one behind another and the simple task was to run to the wall, run back and tag the next person in to do the same thing until everyone had finished!

The twins went head to head on the first run... it was tense but they came in roughly neck and neck. Next to go was Matt J who was running SO fast he even had a little tumble! Hope your knee is ok Matt!

In true GG spirit, everyone was cheering and clapping for their team mates which was LOVELY! And of course it was never about the winning was it guys and girls.... no not at all....! Ha, yeah right! I've never seen you lot run so fast!!!

Team 1 finished a few seconds before team 2 but as it transpired, team 2 had an extra person and therefore an unfair disadvantage so victory was theirs! Better luck next time team 1!

After a lovely group photo at the front of the house, we headed back the way we came, through the park and most importantly down the hill!

Oh hey Vickie!

We arrived at the uni and along came Vickie. I of course took this as an opportunity to massively embarrass her in front of everyone by announcing her huge ultramarathon success but she is amazing and it was such a huge achievement so how could I not? :) And Mridula saw this as a perfect chance to gloat that she had beaten her to 50 good deeds.

There was no time trial this week due to the concerts at the uni blocking the way. Chris had a mild panic attack when he realised the Jacksons were playing at the weekend. We have an MJ superfan in the house!

We had a little stretch on the grass, made our way back to the room (Chris moonwalked his way back) and then headed to the pub!

Thanks so much for coming everyone! Well done on the run, 7km is a big deal especially in that heat so give yourselves a pat on the back! Also thanks for just getting stuck in at the task. You're all amazing! See you next week!

Let's not beetle around the bush

Colchester Report written by Angela Isherwood

A really sunny Wednesday evening, so I got an ice cream whilst waiting for the excited runners to arrive. Unfortunately, our planned painting task has been postponed, but luckily, Colchester in Bloom are always ready to give us something to do, and particularly since the judging is happening soon, we can really help them to spread their workload.

We welcomed new goodgymer Nafisa, and we reminded ourselves about Fay's Cake morning to send her off on her epic bike ride.

Our task was to dead head the flowers in the various border boxes in the town centre. These were at the top of Balkerne hill great, either side of Crouch street, the corner of Headgate and at the Vineyard Street Car Park. This allowed us to do a nice run around the original boundary of Colchester, before descending back to the River via Castle park.

As a warm sunny evening, we attracted a lot of attention as we made our way making Colchester more beautiful, and have a couple of recruits for Goodgym Ipswich when it starts and Goodgym Southhampton whenever that takes off.

When a teenager heckled us saying we were all really slow and ran ahead of us, Tommy and Chris accelerated to show just how fast we could be! All in jest of course.

On the river path, we did a drill where we took our arms out of running to focus on lifting the legs with the hip flexors. All of the runners found it really tiring, and it helps to understand just how a much stronger core can lead to faster running. It also helps to encourage you to engage your core more in running.

As we made our way back to Leisure World, in a slightly comical unfolding, David ran crash bang into Ian. It was comedy. David was looking behind him and Ian had come to a standstill as there was a stag beetle on the path. Using a couple of sticks, Ian rescued the stag beetle, so not only did we help make the town beautiful, we also protected the local wildlife.

Thank's to Sue for the pun!

We dust chaired the load

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

As well as lovely Hounslow regulars Claudia, Dave and Andy, we had some excellent GG tourism going on last night in the shape of Debs all the way from Bristol, and Jo and Ella from Wandsworth. You are all marvellous and deserve a cheer!

Well done to Dave, who did Osterley Park Run last weekend - apparently it's a good one if you like running on grass - and to Jo who tackled (a frustratingly short) Southwark. Good luck to Debs, who has a 10k race coming up this weekend. Check out these speed demons! Don't forget park runs are a great, free way to improve your 5k time; they are all over the country and are really friendly events.

While we were doing our warm up, we discussed which famous person, dead or alive, we would like to take out for a drink. We got David Attenborough, Al Pacino, Terry Pratchett, Bon Jovi, Thierry Henri and Stephen Hawking. Now that's a dinner party I'd like to attend!

We set off for Ealing Road Baptist Church at a nice trot, with Andy and Dave leading the charge. We usually help the pastor, Roger, out with the homeless shelter he hosts every weekend for local men, but this week we were doing a few jobs in the church building. While Ella and Jo got to work shifting a whole load of chairs (and haing a philisophical discussion about heartbreak with the pastor), Debs, Dave, Andy and Claudia were led down the stairs into a small, dusty cellar. You brave people. The job there was a tough one - to clear the cellar of junk and debris. It was really hard going, dirty work, and a bit confined, so we swapped over halfway (apart from poor Dave who heroically did both shifts!). Well done team, you earned your stripes tonight.

Cleaning up done, we set off back to Turnham Green to do a quick but intense fitness session. The run back was quicker than the outward leg, which is great going. We kicked off our session with a quick game of chase the hare. The idea is that nobody knows who the hare is except the hare themselves. Everybody sets off on a loop, and at any point the hare makes a sprint for home, and the other runners have to chase them back. Jo was our speedy target, and everybody made a jolly good effort chasing her down. It's a great way to do a little speed work. If that wasn't enough, we then took on a round of upper body circuits. These included press ups, both wide arm and diamond, tricep dips, side planks and regular planks for 45 seconds at a time. This is a difficult session, but really effective for toning up those upper body muscles.

All that was left was some nice stretches and a quick relax on the grass to end off the night. Well done to everybody who came from near and far, the goodest of gymers! Same again next week? You can sign up here

It May Drizzle But We're Still Rooting For You

Haringey Report written by Varon Lewis

12 Goodgymers ran 2k and volunteered at the Marcus Garvey Library Garden

Roots Manuva

Shouts out to Avni who made it to her first GGH session (with a nudge from Ollie) and out to Nekane who’s on her way to being a coach runner here in Haringey and should get some good deeds logged soon. Give em a cheer folks

The rain drizzled as we awaited the group but we had a secret weapon.. well lucky charm shall we say. Thanks Sarah the group gelled well with a good chinwag before heading off to the task.

This week we were heading over to the Marcus Garvey Library to continue helping the Friends of Tottenham Green bring the garden back to life. And as time goes on we are definitely doing so. We’ve managed to clear lots of tall weeds, undergrowth, rubbish and other green waste which is starting to reveal whats going to be a lovely place to read once we’re done.

Highlights would be our lucky charm Sarah holding off the rain, the amount of clearing that was done along with some of the huge roots that cam out of the ground and a Darth Vader impression reminiscent of Spaceballs the movie

Oh and shouts out to Louise for baking some tasty ginger biscuits... Mmmm

Fab work guys!!
