Rain, rain, go away as we've got three bags to fill!

Haringey Report written by Rebecca

It was looking ominous this as Nekane & Rebecca headed out this Sunday morning and Mrs P was worried they might have to post pone. However Good Gymmers run no matter ran or shine.

Thankfully the rain had drizzled out as Mrs P showed the pair her beautiful garden. She used to take great pleasure in looking after it but despite a wilking mind is no longer able to keep on top of it. As a result weeds had started preventing her lovely plants being able to bloom.

Nekane made quick work on the aforementioned weeds. Soon creating plenty of space for flowers to burst through. Meanwhile Rebecca focused on cutting back the overgrown shrubbery and detangling the roses from a gorgeous smelling bush.

Weeding complete Nekane cut down an unwelcome tree that had taken over a Calendula tree, stopping new blooms from budding. Then the pair bagged up an impressive three bags of garden waste.

Mrs P was completely taken aback by the transformation of her garden. Now restored to its former glory she can truely enjoy it this summer. (And quite fittingly the sun came out as the pair bid her farewell!)

First time Hedgers - Gardening skills

Haringey Report written by Kapil

'First time Hedgers' go to a task which neither runner has performed before. That wasn’t going to stop us Good Gym'ers. We planned in advance, watched YouTube videos and arrived on time. Kapil arrived on foot as it was merely over a mile way while Nekane cycled to Mr A's house. What a nice day to cycle, walk or do gardening. We did all of it. Mr A was expecting us, provided us with the tools, and then we got to work. The garden was pretty with rose, Jasmine and Ivy. There was a beautiful fish tank in the middle with bunch of great looking fish( Our guess-carp). Mr A advised us that he wanted everything trimmed. We asked and were granted permission to click away. We took before pictures, during pictures, after pictures and some more pictures. Please see attached. To our astonishment, we actually tidied up the garden pretty good (two bags full of overgrown plants), moved some plants around (upon his request) to allow him unfettered access to the newly minted garden. And did I mention earlier, took some final pics. At the end, we were all done with a day of gardening and hedging in the sun. Written by, Kapil and Nekane

Roots manouvering

Hackney Report written by Eva Sharpe

Two Goodgymers ran and cycled to Dalston to help Mrs D with her garden.

On a sunny Saturday morning in Hackney, Eva and Nekane went to see Mrs D to help her clear the weeds from her front garden. Her beautiful roses had become overgrown with a voracious green weed that had taken over the garden. The intrepid Goodgymers set about pulling up all the weeds, only to find a complicated spaghetti junction root network under the ground. Digging deep down, and removing the paving stones to get to those bothersome underground roots they soon managed to clear out four bin bags of weeds and roots.

After a quick drink with Mrs D, the pair set off on their weekend travels.

'Cause Ivy haaaad the time of my liiife... and I owe it all to two!

Southwark Report written by Tom Hill

On Saturday morning, two Tower Hamlets runners made the rare trip South of the river to Bermondsey to help Mrs V with her garden in Bermondsey.

Mrs V was well prepared with lots of shiny new tools and plenty of garden waste bags supplied by Southwark council so we wasted no time in getting started.

Unfortunately, due to the wet weather from the Friday night which continued during our visit, we were unable to cut the grass but there was plenty of other things we could crack on with!

To start with, we set about removing the weeds from the side of the patio and turning over the soil to create a nice bed to plant some flowers. We then pulled up a number of thistles and stinging nettles from within the grass before tackling the main event.

The ivy from next door's garden had come over into Mrs V's garden and was covering the majority of her fence on one side. Using a combination of tools and brute strength we were able to remove all the ivy which was stuck very firmly to the fence. Doing so we uncovered a range of wildlife including spiders, wasps, snails and frogs (Axel's favourite).

After 2 and a half hours and several stinging nettle attacks, we had filled 10 large bags with garden waste and the fence looked as good as new!

Many thanks to Mrs V for her kind words of encouragement and thanks - We're looking forward to returning to finish the job when the weather is good enough to cut the grass!
