Daylight (grave?) digging

Wednesday 17th April

Written by Helen Noyes

Six Good Gym Leeds members completed our first daylight session this year at Bedford Fields. We were able to see the results of all our previous twilight and torchlit tasks and the true scale of the lovely community gardens. This week we were quickly put to work digging a hole for a future three meter long pond (to soak willow shoots before they can be woven into a structure). The barrowloads of topsoil were then used to fill raised beds ready for planting. We found some interesting objects buried in the ground and spent time speculating on the possible backstories of the articles of clothing....hoping not to feature in future true crime dramas...

Building Benches for Beer

Wednesday 10th April

Written by Helen Noyes

9 GoodGym Leeds members completed several tasks at Left Bank tonight. The biggest challenge was to transform 3 beer barrels and some planks of wood into an attractive and functional bench. Much scratching of heads and wielding of power tools and saws eventually resulted in a sort of bench...well we liked it! Other tasks tonight included general weeding, litter picking and filling raised beds with compost. Left Bank staff very generously rewarded us with a round of drinks and we enjoyed seeing the various clubs doing their things inside. A warm welcome to Alina doing her first GoodGym Leeds task.

Sand By Me

Sunday 7th April

Written by Laura

Today, 3 GoodGymers headed to Sunshine and Smiles to help sort out their garden for summer.

We emptied the sandpit, weeded, cleared webbing & did a general tidy up. There's much more to do so we're hoping to come back in a few weeks to do more. Hopefully we can get the garden in a decent state so that children who use the service can get out there safely this summer.

Sunshine & Smiles is a charity that provides a support network in Leeds for children and young people who have Down syndrome and their families.

Great work guys & thanks to Jubz who stayed for an extra hour to finish off.

Focus on the French Fancy!

Wednesday 3rd April

Written by Laura

Tonight, 7 GoodGymers braved the April showers to deliver leaflets for Older Wiser Local Seniors in Headingley. Somehow, it miraculously stayed dry.

We split up into two groups, one faster and one slightly slower but both groups managed a 7K run around Kirkstall and Headingley. Helen is my hero and is going to finish off the addresses we didn't get to later this week, thanks Helen!

Welcome to Bryony who joined us for her first session, welcome back to El & congratulations to Ben who did his 10th & Helen who did her 5th mission.

Katie had already done a 6K run before we started, so we can safely assume she burnt off the French Fancy she had waiting for her afterwards.

Well done everyone, another great session!

Strava Not Strata!

Wednesday 27th March

Written by Laura

It's been an eventful day at GoodGym Leeds. Today, Helen and Adam generously gave up their time to head to the studio at Yorkshire Voices to do a live segment on the benefits of exercise. They did a great job explaining what we do at GoodGym, well done guys.

Tonight we met at Headingley Enterprise and Arts Centre and had a 4.25Km run around Headingley. We then did a further promotional interview for Yorkshire Voices, where I accidentally talked about the benefits of the Strata app & their partnership with GoodGym. Rachael then politely told me I'd said Strata not Strava! (Strata are actually the builders I bought my house from)! Luckily, the filmmakers can edit that out & Rachael then talked about Strava the fitness app :)

The footage will be shared soon!

We finished off with a Headingley litter pick.

Well done everyone, it was a bit different today!

Totally Team Toad!

Sunday 24th March

Written by Laura

In the words of Katie...toads, frogs, newts and guinea pigs ...what a great way to spend a Sunday morning! To top it off, the sun was shining & we had coffee & muffins for the workers.

3 GoodGymers, plus 2 honorary members finished the Beeston Primary School outdoor classroom project. We finished clearing the pond, creating a haven for wildlife, weeded the garden and moved the new outdoor furniture into place.

After saying hello to the resident guinea pigs, we spent a lot of time watching the frogs and toads in the pond.

We learned about the difference between frogs and toads. Frogs have thin, permeable skin that lets them absorb water and oxygen. A layer of mucus helps keep frogs moist and makes them feel slimy. On the other hand, toads have dry, thick skin. The thickened skin of their upper body helps them retain water so they can live in drier habitats.

Great work guys!
