Tea and symphony

Bromley Report written by Adele Prince

Under a bright full moon, fourteen fabulous runners covered just under 3km and helped sort through and label donations at Living Well food bank.

This week's title pun is pulling together tonight's task and last week's rather unusual and very special community mission, where Louise and Stuart helped out and Jenn and Ben performed. You can read the report here and see some lovely photos.

It's getting chilly and, under a clear sky, we had all added some extra layers and guarded our extremities against the cold. As we gathered in the garden, we celebrated two milestones, with Ian having completed his 50th good deed at a mission yesterday and Clare completing her 50th tonight - well done both of you! I presented them with gingerbread medals, which they wore with pride (I'm sorry if you have previously reached a milestone and not been in receipt of edible bling, this idea came to me today in a flash of inspiration!).

Tonight we had a bigger group than the past couple of weeks, possibly to do with our super task - our visits to Living Well are always very popular. We ran the short distance to Holy Trinity Church and were met by Rowena and Jane, who showed us a very neatly packed container. It seems they have had some help as the donations have been coming in from the harvest festival, so our job was to pull the crates out and correctly label them. A train of strong bodies lifted and shifted crates and checked the contents before labelling, 'beans', 'biscuits', 'tea', 'sweet treats' and so on. Once this had been done it was time to carefully put everything back, so it will be accessible and easy to grab when the bags are made up for the weekly lunch. Once these were in, it was time to put back the many bags of toiletries that were in the doorway, leaving enough space for volunteers to get in and reach the boxes.

Before we left, Jane and Rowena told us about the different opportunities for volunteering and how they are always in need of helpers. You don't have to commit to coming every week, so have a look here to find out how you can get involved.

On our way back, we stepped away from the road and found some space on the edge of the park (the dark park!) for our little lower-body fitness session. Great work on the various squats, lunges and jumps! As we move into winter, we have to make the most of any light spots we can find, so the bike racks outside Penge East station were the perfect opportunity for some push-ups and the nearby wall gave us a great space to tri-dip. As we stretched outside the Bridge House, we chatted about next week's task, at the Upper Norwood Library Hub. I'm excited to be returning here, after our last visit, which involved a Krypton Factor-like challenge with the most complicated shed ever. This time we will be working inside, with some painting and possibly other tasks - don't wear your best kit and bring a head-torch for the run back.

Keep it steady!

Hills and Boon

Bromley Report written by Adele Prince

Ten tip-top athletes ran 5km to help out at Sydenham Community Library.

Excellent work by Hannah with this week's title pun, a contender for the International Pun of the Month, surely?

As you can see from our photos, we had quite the medal haul this week. It's been a couple of weeks since Jenn and Ben ran the Beckenham Half-Marathon, but this was the first time we had seen them. The conditions were incredibly challenging, with torrential rain and flooded areas to negotiate, so a very big well done to Ben, who managed a six-minute PB and Jenn, who found herself on the podium as second woman! Wow! Our other medal marvels were Louise and Clare, who both took on the Petts Wood 10k for the first time on Sunday (this was also Louise's first 10k race). The conditions couldn't have been more different, with bright blue skies and crisp, cool air. Both said they loved the race, with its super-friendly atmosphere and post-race samosas. Great work, all of you.

Before we set off, we also talked about a couple of upcoming community missions - these are tasks that take place outside our group runs, where you make your own way to the venue and can spend a little longer helping out.

We were off to Sydenham Community Library this week, where we were met by Ilse, who told us all about the events that have taken place since our last visit, a few months back. The library has been host to an exhibition and, at the weekend, a Fun Palaces event. This week we were to focus mainly on cleaning the bookshelves, which become very dusty and grimy, due to being so close to a busy road (and having some high windows that don't quite shut properly!). While a team of book-lovers got busy with the wipes, Louise and Clare were taken to a small room, that was filled with 'stuff'. Their challenge was to pull out lots of boxes, Christmas trees, Santa's grotto, more Christmas trees and maybe a couple more boxes, to access two hanging shelves that needed taking down. These shelves were wholly impractical and will be replaced by some more solid shelves to house the many boxes. Armed with their screwdrivers, they carefully dismantled the glass shelves, then returned everything that had been pulled out.

Meanwhile, our book team were busy pulling out stacks of books, some (Hannah and Bradley) getting distracted by the 'saucy section' (Romance), with its selection of large print fiction. At this point I thought it was about time I revisited The List.

What are we reading right now?

  • Bradley - Adele's run reports (!)
  • Stuart - Madeline Miller 'The Song of Achilles'
  • Darryl - McNae's Essential Law for Journalists
  • Louise CW - Anthony Horowitz 'The Magpie Murders'
  • Jenn - Cordelia Fine 'Delusions of Gender'
  • Ben - Charles Mingus 'Beneath the Underdog'
  • Hannah - Ingeborg Bachmann 'Malina'
  • Louise C - Simon Reeve 'Step by Step, the Life in my Journeys'
  • Clare - André Aciman 'Call Me by Your Name'
  • Adele - Kate Bowler 'Everything Happens for a Reason'

What a wonderfully varied selection of titles!

Once we had wrapped up our task, we said our goodbyes and headed out for my planned fitness session at the outdoor gym. Sadly it was in complete darkness, so we took advantage of some of the street furniture instead, this sudden darkness is certainly keeping me on my toes!

Running back, we chatted as we went, as we always do but, with it being #RunAndTalk week, this seemed particularly appropriate, as did our post-run social. We talked a little about our Christmas social, with a few ideas being thrown around. We do need to make a decision and book a space, so please let me know if you have any thoughts! Next week we will return to Melvin Hall. It's been many months since we were last there, so I look forward to seeing the changes they have made in the meantime and to cracking on with painting a small room (don't wear your favourite leggings or shoes!).

Good luck on Sunday, to Clare, Ian and Kat, who will be running the Royal Park Half-Marathon. Run strong and don't forget to bring your medals next week!

Treasure bubble, take it or leaflet

Bromley Report written by Adele Prince

Spreading the word about what we do at GoodGym, ten runners covered between 3 and 4km, exploring Penge and Anerley.

You've heard of Medal Monday, well I think we will call it Trophy Tuesday here at GoodGym Bromley. Showing off all the bling this week was Clare, who had not one, but two medals to share with us. Well done Clare on tackling both the Bacchus Half-Marathon and the Richmond Half in the space of two weeks (and just look at those lovely medals)! We also congratulated Bradley, who was back on racing form on Sunday, at the Marsha Phoenix Relay Race, over in Hilly Fields. He was part of a team of four...and they only went and won! No medal to show, but he has a voucher to spend at a nice restaurant. Great work, both of you.

It was great to welcome a new face along tonight, hi-fives to Darryl, who joined us for his very first GoodGym group run!

This was a funny old week to do your first run. The task we were lining up has been postponed for a few weeks, so we were taking on the challenge of spreading the word about what we do...with a few twists. Armed with leaflets about coach running and missions, and a few postcards, it was the job of our runners to tell people about our group, passing on information about the wider activities we do locally. Alongside this, there were a few things to tick off:

  • Post/hand out flyers
  • Speak to people about GoodGym
  • Pick up litter
  • Find an interesting street name/name of shop/cafe/pub
  • Think about/find a venue for our next social
  • Pick up a piece of treasure (natural or otherwise!)
  • Distance covered
  • Think up a smashing pun for this week's run report title :)

Split into two teams, one took the Anerley side and the other took the Penge side, aiming to meet back at the war memorial at 8pm. As the two groups put their heads together and planned their course of action, I ran down the High Street, to hand out flyers and spread the word at the various shops and businesses along here. I was surprised to find most places closed (not registering that it was past 7pm!). I did find a potential task venue though and popped into Homebase to source some bright lights for our dark tasks, so it turned out to be a very useful run!

As 8pm came round, I noticed a few red t-shirts gathering and showing off their findings. Taking it in turns, we heard about the adventures that had been had. One group had been on a street art tour of the area (see the photos, I did edit them down a bit, there's A LOT of street art around here!) and did some great work clearing litter from a neglected grassy bank (finding a lovely hand/star-like leaf treasure en route). They also went into a local pub to spread the word and secure a possible venue for a social - good stuff! One area they were not so successful in though was a title pun, but all the points for a full bag of litter and a well-spotted 'Charles Dickens Terrace' (we're unaware of a local connection, random but nice)!

Our other team worked hard on finding treasure, by embarking on a bit of Geochaching, which offered up a sweet little bubble bottle (the item they left in its place, an antiseptic wipe, made me glow with Health & Safety pride, you never know when you might succumb to a Geocaching graze). This prompted the rather lovely title pun (see above), which could take them into the lead, but their bag of litter was a little less bulging. They did also visit a possible social venue though, so we can now take our pick!

On balance it was difficult to judge who was winner in this epic challenge so, with such high quality hunting all round, I will call it a draw.

Next week we will be back to our usual format, as we run to Cator Park, to tackle a few more brambles and weeds. This will be a dark task, so please bring a head-torch if you have one! On Saturday Kat (and I) will be taking on Swim Serpentine, spending a good hour or so in the cold water, to complete the two mile challenge - good luck Kat! On Sunday it's the turn of Jenn, Ben and Ian, who are running the Beckenham Half-Marathon, best of luck everyone and don't forget to bring your medals next week!

Good deed, good deed, good deed yum yum!

Bromley Report written by Adele Prince

On a brisk evening, nine nifty runners covered 5km of running and a whole row of railings at Baxter Fields.

Yes, I am aware that this week's title pun will probably only mean something to about three of tonight's runners, but I'm going with it anyway!

Tuesdays in Penge are always special, but tonight was even more special, with two big milestones being reached. Congratulations to Hannah, who has hit the big 5-0 after just over a year of running with us. In that time, she has been on tour to (we think) seven other areas and has ticked off another milestone, with her parkrun 100 (and a PB to boot). As we ran, I asked Hannah which was her favourite task so far. It's such a difficult question to answer, since many tasks are made special by something incidental, like a conversation en route, or good snacks at the venue (nb not all tasks come with snacks). Having been to a couple of city farm tasks, Hannah said it would probably be 'the one with the goats' - a lovely river run to Surrey Docks Farm, where we were mobbed by some over-friendly kids, who had fun chewing our laces, bag straps and even hair! It's been lovely running with you Hannah, you never stop smiling and it's infectious! I was also hitting a milestone tonight, having reached my 300th good deed. I have had a bit longer to do this, having started in December 2015 and with around 70 of them being visits to my coach for a weekly chat. They've all been amazing and it's absolutely down to the wonderful people I have the privilege of meeting each week: warm, kind, generous, thoughtful, passionate and unique, every one of them :)

Squats love got to do with it?

As we were running via Crystal Palace Park, we did our warm up here, with some jogging, hi-fiving, balancing and squatting. We definitely needed to fire up our glutes ready for this run, culminating in a nice, long hill towards Baxter Fields, with Bradley and Stephen back-marking all the way. It felt good, on arrival, to walk all the way past the railings we have already painted and pick up a section much further along. Popping on gloves, grabbing brushes and rollers and carefully sharing out the thick black paint, we quickly got stuck in, chatting as we worked. It was great catching up with everyone after a little break last week and to see Stephen, who had come on tour especially for our milestone evening (thanks Steve!). We worked our way along, with Ian, Tim and Hannah on the opposite side, reaching those bits that we couldn't quite get to from the front, top teamwork! Before long it was time to peel off the gloves and tuck in to some sweet treats (thank you Ruth!). We will be returning here in October to help out on a Sunday, with some bulb planting - watch this space!

Core blimey!

The great thing about this particular run is the return leg, with plenty of down hill - weeeeeeeee! We swooped into a - now dark - park, where we found a semi-light patch of ground to work our cores. In pairs, we did some challenging games, with the stopwatch being used this time, so I didn't get distracted by chatting...I think you will all agree that the best bit tonight was our core Mexican wave. No? Oh.

When we see Louise and Stuart next week, they will have run a half-marathon together. I say run, there will be a fair bit of wine-tasting too and probably a lot of chatting. Good luck and, most of all, have fun you two, we can't wait to hear all about it!

Next week's task is currently being confirmed, so sign up anyway and take your chance with a lucky dip group run. See you there!
