Report written by Nicky Woodall (she/her)
๐17 dedicated GoodGymmers met on bank holiday Monday for today's group run, in front of a double cherry moment-a cherry picker next to a cherry blossom tree ๐บ
๐We celebrated some brilliant running achievements - Amy's 50th parkrun, Tay's parkrun PB and a few 10k PBs ๐
๐We named and numbered off, stating our favourite type of dance or dance memory, in honour of anyone who may have done any maypole dancing this weekend. Ceilidhs were very popular (Move the Masses are having one soon so there'll be a chance to ceilidh away with fellow GoodGymmers), along with moshing and Tristan's can can ๐บ
๐After a warm up, we headed off to Holgate Community Orchard. It was brilliant to see the progress since we were last there, and we hope that the covering puts off those pesky weeds ๐ฑ
๐ทโโ๏ธ๐ทโโ๏ธOur task tonight was destruction in aid of construction. Some people knocked down two fences and lay them on top of the weed coverings whilst others knocked in some tent pegs, again to secure the covering sheets. David showed some particularly impressive mallot-wielding and there was some great teamwork on display too ๐
โกIn a flash, that was done but Helen found plenty more jobs. We headed over to the other end of the allotment, where said pesky weeds (most notably, nettles) had returned so needed digging over again. It was all hands on deck and a chance to test how nettle-proof (or not...) our gloves are ๐งค
๐ชWe relocated our fitness session to do it at the task to include as many people as possible. It was one of Michal's HIIT sessions and removing the floor exercises for the rough ground we were on meant that it was pretty dominated by kicking (the air rather than each other). No one will be messing with GoodGym York any time soon ๐คบ
๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธWith that, some people peeled off on our run back whilst others came back to CVS for stretching and on to the pub ๐ป
โ ๏ธNext week, we've got two tasks so we need as many pairs of hands as possible, for woodchip spreading at Heworth Without with Mitch and clearing and digging ponds at West Bank Park. There might even be more frogs around, you never know ๐ธ
Holgate Allotment Association are a volunteer group of allotment holders who try to make Holgate Allotments a great place to socialise and grow veg. We have an allotment plot on the boundary of our site which is unused and completely overgrown but which we think will make a lovely orchard and wildlife area with seating for the local community to enjoy. Clearing the site will be a massive task, but it's one we want to embark on this Autumn. Can you help?
