End of season ales and seals sale

Southwark Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

Say that fast a couple of times...end of season ales and seals sale, end of season ales and seals sale, end of season ales and seals sale...a bit of a tongue twister.

Nine GoodGymers met at our beloved starting spot, Old Spike Roastery, for tonight's group run, which was a shorter run (1.3k there and 1k back) to TRAID in Peckham. After Sam gave his welcome GoodGym speech to Said and updated the rest on what's going on this weekend and over the next few weeks. It was too hot to stay inside the Old Spike Roastery for too long, so we went out on the green to enjoy the sunny weather and start the warm up.

As we said our name and number, our ice-breaker question tonight was to do with the fact it was World Music Day on Summer solstice, but also seen Glasto is on this weekend, Sam asked: Which artist or musician would you like to see (dead or alive) at a festival setting?

We had all sorts from the late David Bowie, Amy Winehouse and Bob Marley to the classics like Pink Floyd, Diana Ross and Queen.

Change clothes and go

Nope, not that Jay-Z song, but we didn't need to change clothes as our short run from Old Spike Roastery wasn't as sweaty...that came later 👀.

When we arrived at TRAID on Rye Lane, we met our 10th GoodGymer, Alex was patiently waiting for us as he came ran from home.

After getting Mabel's attention, we were let in and she explained that task at hand. We had to release the clothes off the hangers and onto the floor. These clothes would be put into a large cardboard box to be sent back to the warehouse for storage. The hangers were separated into smaller boxes depending on their type - black or silver. The task was simple enough, so everyone took a section each. Sam set a time of 30 minutes to finish the task, but the task was smashed in a tight 15 minutes. Half the group stayed behind to sweep and clean the store whereas Emma led a small running group consisting of Katy, Gemma and Daryl to flyer around the area for Camberwell Feel Good Festival and for us (GoodGym).

The 45 minutes after our arrival, both groups were done with their tasks and everyone was messing around with the SALE blocks to create different words like "Lass", "Seals" and "Ales" for the group photo.

Sensing we still had some time to "kill", Sam led the group onto Peckham Rye "green" for a card based HIIT session. With pumping music, everyone should have done 75x Ab crunches/leg raisers (Diamonds), 75x push-ups (Clubs), 75x squats (Spades), 75x Mountain Climbers (Hearts) and 10 burpees (joker cards x 2). We finished off with a stretch that was badly needed for Emma, who was feeling a slightly pain in her hip flexor - plenty of ice and rest.

Thank You to all the GG-ers

A personal thanks from me to all those who came out tonight! Although, it was one of our shorter runs, I hope I didn't exhaust you with the HIIT session. We don't do them every week, so please come back 😂 Thanks for smashing through the tasks as we got plenty done. Well done team!

Personal thanks to Katy and Paulin for being backmarkers and walking leaders.

Thank You Mabel

GoodGym is all about getting fit and doing good! We praise the runners/cyclists/walkers who come to get fit and help out, but we often forget about our task owner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mabel for coordinating us after a busy, hot and long day. Appreciate that you have the time for us and gave us plenty to do. Hopefully, see you in September for the next time we're needed.

Ninety nine solutions, but rain ain't one

Southwark Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

39 GoodGymers and their friends (two and four legged) came together for the first GoodGym London North vs South of the river rounders tournament.

Teams were split into roughly those from GoodGym boroughs North and South, but there were a few more Southerners, who in the end represented the winning team...but more on that later.

We had No Runs Northerners versus Southern Softies in the first semi, where Ed smashed all his shots for a rounder and posted a 13 1/2 score. Unfortunately, No Runs Northerners could only score 7 1/2 rounders before being caught all out.

The next semi final saw Ninety Nine Problems, but a Northerner ain't one play Southern Spitballers and this wasn't a close affair as the Northerners put 14 rounders on the scoreboard leaving the Southerners with a difficult task to beat them. They managed 5 rounders before the whole team were caught or were run out.

We came to the 3rd/4th place and Southern Spitballers batted first, but could only manage 2 rounders as the rules changed to five outs and then we swap over. No Runs Northerners had a bit of a scare as they were 1 1/2 rounders from victory, but the Southerns had to get two more out. With grit and determination, the No Runs Northerners pushed and ran their half rounders to eventually score 2 and 1/2 rounders to win 3rd place!

By the time, it came to the final, misty rain swept in to make the surfaces slippery as a few players found out... Ninety Nine Problems, but a Northerner ain't one smashed 7 & 1/2 rounders. Which ended up being enough to secure the tournament as Southern Softies, even with big hitting Ed could only manage 5 rounders before five team members were caught out.

The team celebrated their victory with a "Champagne shower". Well done to Paul, Claire, Laura, Anna, Sam Smillie, Aaron, Maia and Jake (all Sam's friends) for winning with Ninety Nine Problems, but a Northerner ain't one!

We're on for the next rounders social in Victoria Park on the 16th of July! Sign up if you can make it. Watch out Northerners...the southerners will be practicing ⚾👀
