Gardening work for Thames Reach - homeless & mental health project

Tue 28 Dec 10:30 am
90 Galleywall Road, london , SE16 3PB
Clearing and tidying up the garden, which will have a big impact on their wellbeing.

Thames Reach have asked us to come back and continue with tidying up their garden for the residents to enjoy. The residents were homeless people on a path to integrate back into society over a two year program. The outdoor space positively impacts and promotes their mental wellbeing. The tasks that need doing:

  • Mow the lawn
  • Pick up litter
  • Cut back overgrown greenery

This is a community mission, so we will meet at the task. We encourage you to run, cycle or walk to 90 Galleywall Road as physical exercise will boost your mental health. We'll meet outside 90 Galleywall Road at 10:30 and we expect to be done by 12:00. If you have any questions, please put this down in the comments. Here's the contact details of the place if you get lost: 020 3751 8510.

GoodGym Greenwich group run and shifting stone at the Garrison Church

Wed 8 Dec 18:45 pm
Charlton House, Charlton, , London, SE7 8RE
Get fit and do good in Greenwich

Hi everyone and welcome to GoodGym Greenwich!

We're a friendly and social group who combine running with volunteering in the local community. We meet every Wednesday to get active and do a physical task for charities and community organisations in the area.

The Task

This week we will complete our first task at the Royal Garrison Church! This church is an important landmark in Woolwich. It was built in 1862 to serve the Royal Artillery and was bombed during World War Two. It's beautiful mosaics have recently been conserved and the church welcomes visitors and worshippers throughout the year.

They have quite a few bricks and stone slabs to be wheelbarrowed away from the front of the church.

This will be heavy and hard work so please take care and only lift what you are comfortable with!

We'll be returning for a community mission at the weekend to clear some of the brambles - sign up here: https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/de-brambling-at-st-george-s-garrison-church

The Run

We will be running from Charlton House which is a 2.4km run each way. You are welcome to join us at whatever pace - we never ever leave anyone behind!

Where & When

We meet at 6.45pm for a 7 o'clock start outside Charlton House The session will be about 90 minutes in total so we should be all wrapped up by 8.30pm.

What To Bring

This task is outdoors so headtorches will be particularly useful and please bring some gloves. Do also wear some reflective gear as it will be dark travelling to and from the task!

See you then :)

Sun 30 Jan 10:30 am
Old Alleynians Rugby Club , Dulwich Common, London, SE21 7HA
Keeping the community club in great shape for all!

Helping out Old Alleynian Rugby Club with some community gardening for the first time in 2022!

Old Alleynian Rugby Club are a volunteer led Community Amateur Sports Club offering rugby for all. Their volunteers undertake grounds maintenance activities around the sides of the grounds, including controlling the ivy & weeds; drainage ditch clearance and general facilities maintenance (this may include some painting and cleaning tasks, if time and weather permits). They would like additional assistance once a month to support their Green Team in these tasks. There is plenty to do as they have a 9 acre site to manage. Tool and gloves are available and for those that are interested an introduction to rugby can be arranged after our mission.

Seren back again

Sat 27 Nov
โ€ข
Report written by Julian Osman

Saturday saw our return to Westcombe Woodland, a 3.6 acre Woodland hidden away next to Seren Park in Maze hill. The Woodland is being lovingly restored to create a protected educational wild space. The mission for the day was to help with setting up a wildflower area to attract more bees for the hives in the woods.

Two Goodgymmers arrived to be be met by Andrew and Jeremy, two of the regular volunteers, and tasks were assigned. Soil first needed to be placed in bags at the bottom of a slope, before being wheeled up into the woods and to a lovely clearing where it was emptied into a trench to from a sterile barrier to allow wildflowers to proliferate in the future. In addition, as a result of previous days inclement weather, a number of leaves that had accumulated in the trench needed to be removed and it fell to one of the runners to rake all of these out. 90 minutes later with leaves gone and a lot of soil moved the mission was complete.

Cooking @ Mercato Metropolitano's festive holiday programme for kids

Mon 27 Dec 10:30 am
42 Newington Causeway, London, SE1 6DR
Helping out "MM in the Community" facilitate this festive programme for the local kids

Mercato Metropolitano near Elephant & Castle is probably best known as a great date venue or hang out spot with friends with its diverse food court, however, they have a "giving back to the community" angle to their business. "MM in the Community" are organizing a programme of activities for the local children during the Christmas break. This includes cooking classes, arts and crafts and theatre workshops.

The classes will be attended by 20 kids (over a two day cycle - new set of 20 kids every two days). The sessions will be run by professionals. However, they would love our support to oversee the activities, look after the children, serve lunch and other small tasks. They would need 2-3 volunteers for this. Please sign-up, if you can commit.

The two day programme is as following:

Day 1 (10:30-13:00): Cooking class and lunch - This listing

Day 2 (10:30-15:00): Arts & Crafts, Lunch and Theatre workshop.
