Easy Like Sunday Morning - Session #2

Sun 23 May 11:00 am
Green Park Station (park-side exit), London, W1J 9DZ
Join this friendly group for an inclusive run, a few body-weight exercises, maybe a little run-along music, and a good ol' natter

Hi friends,

Come along and join a friendly group of runners and chatters for a little jaunt through our city's loveliest central parks. We'll be starting in Green Park, heading up through and around St James's, and will be finishing with a loop of Hyde Park. Along the way, we'll stop for a few quick body-weight exercises, will be joined by some nice chilled-out musical vibes, and will have a good ol' natter too.

For those wanting to take things speedy and quick, I'll send out the route in advance so you know where you're going. As for me, I'll be taking things steady and will sit at the back of the group. The route'll be roughly 10k and you'll be able to drop off at any point if this is a little far for a Sunday morning - and for those looking to spread their running wings up to the 10k mark, you'll be sure to find a super-supportive and relaxed group to get you there at the pace that works for you.

Looking forward to it, friends,

Alex

Improve the condition of the common

We're going to help out the Friends of Woolwich Common who work to protect this beautiful open space and keep it clear from litter.

They'll have plenty of bags and pickers so just bring some gloves with you. If you register to be an Environmental Champion at waste.advisors@royalgreenwich.gov.uk you can also get your own pickers from the council.

We'll meet opposite the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the common at 11am. This will be a recurring task on the last Sunday of each month to keep the common in tip top condition!

Transport Greggs leftovers to a homeless charity

Sat 15 May

Bright Morning Star Prisons and Homeless Outreach help to rebuild, support and elevate the lives of the most vulnerable people on the street and at their Walk-In Centres. They provide basic and immediate physical and emotional help to the public, and provide a free counselling service.

We've been asked to help with transporting leftovers from Greggs, 4 Electric Avenue, Brixton to Lola who distributes the food at 2 Byrne House, Kett Gardens, SW91 1SR. Here's a map - it's a 1km run/ride.

Please arrive by 6pm. If you go in and say you're collecting food for Bright Morning Star Prison and Homeless Outreach, they should give you the leftovers! There may be quite a lot so just take what you can :)

🎒Please bring a backpack/panniers to transport the food (plastic bags might be useful too as the bags the pastries etc are in can be greasy!).

🤿Please bring a mask to wear in the shop

We need 3 people to sign up to transport the food - you can either run or ride, together or separately. If there are any problems, please call Lola from Bright Morning Star on 07492 079197

Spartacus: Mud and Weeds

Sat 8 May
Report written by Sam Lefevre

Well, I was reminded by a friend that Alexandra was Egyptian and not Roman...so maybe the pun title doesn't work. But, hey ho!

Four GoodGymers met on a misty rainy Saturday morning for a spot of gardening at Alexandra Park in Sydenham. For one of those GoodGymers, Dominique, it was her first time ever! 🎉🙌 Welcome to the family! Trust me, we're nice...and we don't bite 🤔🙄

It was great to see Millie and Lou, who so happen to be Friends of Alexandra Park as well as Friends of Cator Park! Don't think you get that type of deal in a Tesco's or Sainsbury's. Geez, I'm too young for these poor Dad jokes...

Anyway, we got to work straight away with our forks and gardening gloves we started to pull out weeds in the ever so muddy soil. This was actually a blessing as if it wasn't wet, we would be struggling! However, like a bull in a china shop, some of us (not naming names and I've been guilty of this too) started pulling out bulbs and other non-weeds. Still, it was bound to happen as a weed in my eyes could be a flower to someone else (said a professional gardener...).

After two hours of pulling out weeds, piling them up and shifting them in builder bags, we had pretty much completed the task we set out to do! Happy faces all around, but cold bodies, so we didn't hang around for too long and everyone rushed off home.

Next task at Alexandra Park is in less than 2 weeks on the 22nd of May, so don't forget to sign up!

Moving bags of compost @ Pop Brixton

Thu 6 May

This should be a fun one! Urban Growth, who get community gardens up and running, have asked us for a hand getting a load of 40kg bags of compost up on top of the Pop Brixton 3rd floor terrace.

  • Wheelbarrowing the bags to the bottom of the staircase

  • Making a chain up the spiral staircase

  • Emptying the bags into the planters

This will be a great whole body workout (remember to lift from the legs) but a fab way to start the day!

Please bring gardening gloves and a mask. 🧤🤿

Meet at the Pop Brixton car park entrance (down to the right of the entrance) at 8.15am.
