Simon celebrates 2 years of Goodgym Training

Mon 6 Sep

Area Activator Simon started as a trainer for Goodgym Islington in August 2019 (after being handed the steering wheel from Paul Bown), and has just realised that he passed his 2nd anniversary.

Too busy Goodgymming while the world turned upside down for a year or so!

So we will be planning on hosting our monthly social at The Highbury Library on Drayton Park after our scheduled group run. Open to all Goodgymmers.

Register limit of 15 to start with, to ensure table allocations for this lovely local bottle shop, but can increase capacity upon request. Feel free to message below if we are full up.

Caxton Action (and Simon's 2 year anniversary!)

Mon 6 Sep
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

We had a really strong turn out for last night's group run to Caxton House Community Centre- 14 total Goodgymmers, with 6 of us completing the full 2.4 mile run starting at the Emirates Stadium. It was a pleasure to see some familiar faces from the last few years (including Sally, who completed her 300th good deed!), and to hear of people's running plans (well done to Steve on his half marathon on the bizarre Olympic Park noodle course on Sunday!).

Upon our arrival at Caxton House, we were all offered much appreciated drinking water (especially at the start of this heat wave!), and were separated into two groups.

Group 1 were given clippers, loppers and gloves, and assisted the team with trimming back a mass of overgrown greenery around a front garden space. More clipping was also required for a huge pile of branches and overgrowth near the back entrance of the centre, with the intention of passing the wooden waste into a chipper.

Group 2 picked up wheelbarrows, shovels and forks, and set about clearing a collection of soil beds at the back of the centre. The plan was to distribute the old soil into a new planter, located in a sun trap and a better spot for growing food and vegetables. Unfortunately, the soil proved to be pretty firm due to the amount of sun we have experienced over the last week, but our team did a smashing job at picking away at the mud and muck.

We called time after 40 minutes of activity, and almost all of our group joined us for a social down hill run (and cycle) back to The Arsenal Community Hub.

Trainer Simon celebrates 2 years!

In September 2019, Paul Bown (legendary GG Islington and Camden trainer) moved to Sheffield, and Trainer Simon officially took over as the main organiser for GG Islington. To celebrate, we made a trip over to The Highbury Library on Drayton Park to enjoy our monthly social. It was a blast to see you all!

We have just listed the next social on the GG site, so feel free to sign up here:

GROUP RUN- Caxton House Cultivation

Mon 6 Sep 18:45 pm
The Arsenal Community Hub, 56 Benwell Road, London, N7 7BA
Continuing our refreshing garden reworking at Caxton House Community Centre, Archway

The plan is to meet up outside the Arsenal Community Hub on Benwell Road, and after a short warm up, health and safety briefing and a warm welcome, we will run together to Caxton House.

We have been invited back to Caxton House (after our automated wood chipping fun 2 weeks back), to lend a hand with refreshing an awesome food and veg plot. Fresh soil and compost required, which will involve plenty of digging and wheel barrowing. Great stuff!

Task Location

Caxton House, 129 St John's Way, London N19 3RQ

If you are not planning to run with us, our arrival time at Caxton House will be 7.10 - 7.15pm.

After our session, we will aim to arrive back at The Arsenal Community Hub for 8.30pm at the latest.

Things to Note

Please only bring items you are willing to run with.

The bag drop option is not currently available to us at the Arsenal Community Hub, as the space is being used as a Covid testing facility.

This also means that we do not have access to toilets or changing areas yet either.

Area Activator Simon's 2 Year Anniversary!

Simon has just reached the 2 year milestone as your local Goodgym Trainer (and what a couple of years to do it!). To celebrate, we are planning on enjoying a few refreshments (alcoholic and non alcoholic on offer) at The Highbury Library on Drayton Park Road after this group run.

Twisting my Cucumelon, man

Mon 23 Aug
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Goodgym Islington returned to Caxton House for the first time in over 18 months last night- a long time considering this lovely community centre used to be one of our regular tasks! The team have been busy renovating the inside of the halls for new groups, and the outside for very exciting gardening and neighbourhood growing projects. It is wonderful to come back to help with their ambitious plans!

Area activator Simon, Caitlin, Steve and Steve met up at the Arsenal Community Hub for a chat and a warm-up, before running the 1.5 mile route to St John's Way, Archway. We caught up with the rest of our group at Caxton House, where we were greeted by a crew of volunteers, who were already busy wood chipping.

Our main task (a large ongoing project), involved filtering through a huge pile of collected branches and tree cuttings, and chopping the thinner pieces down to an even smaller size. These sticks are then fed into a wood chipper, to be made into mulch for future growing projects.

Emily and Steve also helped with digging out some old planters around the back of the centre, just by a collection of freshly grown fruit and veg. The soil in the planters is still good (despite being full of weeds), so we moved the compost over to a new location with better exposure to the summer sun. We were able to complete a full wheel barrow load (involving a push up and over a gang plank) before finishing up for the evening (we will certainly return).

Before heading home, our hard working Goodgymmers enjoyed some fresh drinking water, biscoff biscuits and some delicious, home grown cucumelons (tiny, sharp tasting but very tasty cucumbers). Super refreshing!

GROUP RUN- Cutting back trees at Caxton House

Mon 23 Aug 18:45 pm
The Arsenal Community Hub, 56 Benwell Road, London, N7 7BA
The garden at this lovely community hub could do with some TLC after the past 18 months!

The plan is to meet up outside the Arsenal Community Hub on Benwell Road, and after a short warm up, health and safety briefing and a warm welcome, we will run together to Caxton House Community Centre.

The team at Caxton House have asked if GG Islington would be available to help with cutting back a collection of overgrown trees and bushes in their shared garden space. The whole area is in need of some TLC after being unattended after 18 months, so all we would appreciate as many hands as we can gather!

Task Location

Caxton House, 129 St John's Way, London N19 3RQ

If you are not planning to run with us, our arrival time at Caxton House will be 7.10 - 7.15pm.

A Plum Gig

Mon 2 Aug
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Our team at Goodgym Islington joined us for our second official group run from the Emirates Stadium since the return of social running. This time, 5 of us warmed up and ran together towards Elizabeth House Foodbank, one of our classic missions during the height of the pandemic. Paul and Hanry bumped into each other while run commuting from North London, and found out that they were going in the same direction!

Upon our arrival, we met up with the rest of the crew, who had come straight to the task from work, on foot, by bike and on electric scooter! Natalie from Elizabeth House has prepared 10 large crates of donated shopping for our goodgymmers to drop off at various walkable locations across Arsenal, Highbury Hill and Blackstock Estates- essential supplies for local families, vulnerable individuals and those in care.

As the food bank volunteers closed up the centre for the day, we were all offered some lovely sweet plums grown at the Castle Climbing Centre community food gardens, which would have been discarded otherwise (as is the nature of growing fresh fruit from trees- nothing for months, and then a year's worth of food appears out of nowhere!)

Our 5 Goodgym runners picked up their bags of plums, and scaled the mighty Highbury Hill climb back to the Emirates Stadium for our return journey to HQ. A top evening out helping out a busy community organisation.

Next Monday

We will be back group running again next Monday- running to Thornhill Square Gardens, just off Caledonian Road. Beautiful community garden space, maintained by the Friends of Thornhill Square Gardens.
