GROUP RUN- Freightliner's Farm Fun- *Starting at Arsenal Community Hub!*

Mon 27 Jun 18:45 pm
The Arsenal Community Hub, 56 Benwell Road, London, N7 7BA
Visiting this amazing city farm in Paradise Park, lending a hand with overall maintenance!

Freightliner's Farm have invited the Goodgym team back to their lovely inner city project. Liz and the team have been very busy with re-opening the centre for local school groups and community groups (using the one-way system we helped with building in 2021 between lockdowns). It's so lovely to return!

We are likely to be doing some classic farm jobs (sweeping, rinsing surfaces with hose pipes, mucking out stables and replacing with fresh straw). Wellies and gloves are in offer.

Task Location

Freightliner's Farm, Sheringham Rd, London N7 8PF

If you are not planning to run with us, our arrival time at Freightliner's Farm will be 7.10 - 7.15pm.

After our session, we will aim to arrive back at The Arsenal Community Hub for 8.30pm at the latest.

Things to Note

We are delighted to announce that we will be returning to the Arsenal Community Hub as a starting point!

A bag drop and bathroom facilities will be available for our group runs.

Please allow enough time to drop bags, as we will be running at 7pm sharp!

In the trenches

Sun 19 Jun
Report written by Emily

4 Goodgymers attended the monthly Crouch End Open Space (CREOS) session to help the local volunteers. When I arrived, Guro was already hard at work clearing sticks and leaves from the trenches alongside the footpath. I joined her and together we managed to clear at least 10 bags worth (though we lost count). Around the corner Caitlin took part in various tasks including building a very impressive wall of sticks, to keep people out of the woods. Nico was moving logs from the cricket ground which sounded pretty challenging as he had to avoid hitting rogue children.

As usual the lovely volunteers put on a great picnic of homemade quiche, bread and cheeses (Guro is pictured protecting the quiche from a hungry dog).

Crouch End Open Space (CREOS) Volunteering Day (June 2022)

Sun 19 Jun 11:00 am
Crouch End Open Space, Greenways, London, N8 8RN
Our monthly woodland regeneration session with the CREOS volunteering team

Join us as we help the team at CREOS, a local conservation charity, maintain and improve a lovely green oasis in Crouch End.

CREOS looks after the meadows and wooded pathways of the Crouch End Open Space. GoodGym runners have been helping them maintain this beautiful patch of land for a while now, and the CREOS team always has lots for us to do.

This month, the CREOS team are planning on playing down a load of hoggin (a mix of hardy sand, clay and gravel aggregate) for new paths along the forest walking routes. It will be a big job, so we can use as many hands as possible!

A mix of tasks will be available, involving classic wheelbarrowing and shoveling workouts, but also forest path maintenance. Less physical tasks are also on offer.

We'll meet for an 11am start and aim to work for two hours. Stay as long as you can... but if you can make it to 1pm you'll get to enjoy a picnic* provided by the CREOS team. (Though this may be contingent on the weather!)

During the Summer months, we will be meeting by the bench in CREOS meadow itself, accessible via the Greenways walk.

Clean patio for clean break

Wed 15 Jun
Report written by Pete Hutchings

It was a hot one, so we met and the task and took it easy.

After our last visit and failed attempt and pressure washing we manged to get it up and run to further clean areas of the patio

We revamped some planters very which had masses of old dead plants and roots to be replaced with new soil and plants.

Moving an olive tree other established pots we created a screen for the green which will be further enhanced by the sweet peas and strawberries we had planted.

The large pots made way for the grow bags and vegetable planting with courgettes, tomatoes and aubergine's going in.

All efforts rewarded with cake thanks to Liz!

We'll be back in a few weeks to do more preparation for Clean Breaks summer festival.

Splashing about on the canal

Tue 14 Jun
Report written by Pete Hutchings

It was a perfect hot sunny evening for a paddle along the canal.

we strapped on our buoyancy aids and after the difficult task working out if we wanted left or right paddles we made our way to the kayaks.

This was the tricky part get in and out of the boats is the point we we're most likely to fall in the water, safe say we all made it in and out ok, not with out a a few worrying moment's

A small competitive moment when we we're tasked with linking 5 boats together to form a raft and race. Congratulations to the team for linking together and steaming ahead to the bridge for the win!

it was great to meet Good Gymers from neighbouring areas and get up close with so many young coots and other waterfowl on the water.

Thank you Ritsu for the fab photos!

You spinach me round baby, right round

Mon 6 Jun
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

After a very busy long weekend of Jubilee overload, thunderstorms and tube strikes, a relaxed evening of watering and gardening tasks at the Tufnell Park Plant Nursery was exactly what we needed!

Adam, Katie, Benedict and Area Activator Simon caught up outside the Elizabeth House Food Hub, discussing stag do organising duties, jubilee parties and weekend races before setting off towards Tufnell Park. We crossed The Emirates Stadium on route and passed local legend Seyfu Jamaal on route (captain of London Heathside Running Club and mentor for The Running Charity).

We passed the Odeon on Holloway Road, and found the rest of our crew outside the Plant Nursery. Frannie from Octopus Community Network was communicating with AA Simon remotely tonight, and had a series of tasks available for us. First things first, we gathered up a collection of water cans and filled them from the rain water butts in the centre of the nursery. Objective 1 was to hydrate all the plants in the polytunnel green house (lots of saplings and bulbs needed regular watering), and then we moved on to the rest of the garden. Anne and Annikki also helped with digging out a large planter full of overgrown spinach (which was not picked up during the Jubilee plant sale over the weekend), ready for new plants to be propagated.

Adam and Caitlin assisted AA Simon with linking up a hose pipe to a local water source on the housing estate to we could super-charge our watering abilities! After about 40 minutes of efficient watering and weeding, we closed up the garden gates, and set off on our own journeys home (with an additional run back to Elizabeth House on route).
