All Chipping In

Sun 19 Sep
Report written by John Shirley

On a warm morning, we all eventually arrived at the meadow, not easy to find for newcomers (we all got lost the first time).

Alison, Paul and John shovelled a huge pile of woodchip into wheelbarrows, to be dispersed along the length of a long path. Caitlin, on her 15th Good Deed, used a rake to spread the woodchip, while rake-less Mali improvised with a special shoe-shuffle.

Becca and Beth were busy cutting back overhanging foliage; in fact Beth was working so fast she was just a blur (see picture). Sophie and Karen were also busy keeping untidy growth at bay. Steve moved some heavy paving stones, then sawed back some over-long branches.

This time, as well as Friends of CREOS we were joined by friend of everyone, Gus Dog. After we'd finished, the rain started to fall, having kindly held off until we completed our tasks.

Lucky 13 on the 13th

Mon 13 Sep
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Headtorch season is upon us!

Area Activator Simon met up with 6 runners at the Arsenal Community Hub on Benwell Road on Monday evening (including first timer Katherine, and GG Lambeth runner Alfie- welcome!). Our crew made our way out to Thornhill Square Gardens, just off Caledonian Road- running approx 3km each way.

Upon our arrival, we caught up with 6 more Goodgymmers (including regulars like Steve, Patrick and Benedict), and local volunteer Chris, one of the Friends of Thornhill Square Gardens.

We branched off into 4 groups between us- Team 1 picked up wheelbarrows from the community shed to assist with moving and shifting a pile of green waste and soil into a compost bin on the opposite side of the park. Team 2 helped to re-arrange and tidy a line of woven willow branches, positioned to allow new shoots to create an organic border around the flower beds. Team 3 set about weeding out the other flower beds, and trimming the connecting grass verges using loppers and secateurs. Finally, Team 4 continued their fine work of clearing the main entrance path of weeds and overgrown plants using shovels, hoes and gloved hands.

Within 45 minutes, we had all completed a plenty of objectives, especially with the darkness starting to fall. Portable work lights were used to illuminate our work spaces, along with our headtorches. We cleared up our tools and all of our green cuttings, and parted ways- 6 runners joined Trainer Simon for the return run (up hill!) back to the Emirates Stadium.

Wonderful work everyone!

Next Week!

We will return to Caxton House Community Centre to continue their lovely neighbourhood gardening project.

Crouch End Open Space (CREOS) Volunteering Day (September 2021)

Sun 19 Sep 11:00 am
Greenways, London, N8 8JJ
Our monthly woodland regeneration session with the CREOS volunteering team

Join us as we help the team at CREOS, a local conservation charity, maintain and improve a lovely green oasis in Crouch End.

CREOS looks after the meadows and wooded pathways of the Crouch End Open Space. GoodGym runners have been helping them maintain this beautiful patch of land for a while now, and the CREOS team always has lots for us to do.

We'll meet for an 11am start and aim to work for two hours. Stay as long as you can... but if you can make it to 1pm you'll get to enjoy a picnic* provided by the CREOS team. (Though this may be contingent on the weather!)

Here is a link to our start location- over at CREOS Meadow:

Caxton Action (and Simon's 2 year anniversary!)

Mon 6 Sep
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

We had a really strong turn out for last night's group run to Caxton House Community Centre- 14 total Goodgymmers, with 6 of us completing the full 2.4 mile run starting at the Emirates Stadium. It was a pleasure to see some familiar faces from the last few years (including Sally, who completed her 300th good deed!), and to hear of people's running plans (well done to Steve on his half marathon on the bizarre Olympic Park noodle course on Sunday!).

Upon our arrival at Caxton House, we were all offered much appreciated drinking water (especially at the start of this heat wave!), and were separated into two groups.

Group 1 were given clippers, loppers and gloves, and assisted the team with trimming back a mass of overgrown greenery around a front garden space. More clipping was also required for a huge pile of branches and overgrowth near the back entrance of the centre, with the intention of passing the wooden waste into a chipper.

Group 2 picked up wheelbarrows, shovels and forks, and set about clearing a collection of soil beds at the back of the centre. The plan was to distribute the old soil into a new planter, located in a sun trap and a better spot for growing food and vegetables. Unfortunately, the soil proved to be pretty firm due to the amount of sun we have experienced over the last week, but our team did a smashing job at picking away at the mud and muck.

We called time after 40 minutes of activity, and almost all of our group joined us for a social down hill run (and cycle) back to The Arsenal Community Hub.

Trainer Simon celebrates 2 years!

In September 2019, Paul Bown (legendary GG Islington and Camden trainer) moved to Sheffield, and Trainer Simon officially took over as the main organiser for GG Islington. To celebrate, we made a trip over to The Highbury Library on Drayton Park to enjoy our monthly social. It was a blast to see you all!

We have just listed the next social on the GG site, so feel free to sign up here:

If you are not planning to run with us, our arrival time at Caxton House will be 7.10 - 7.15pm.

After our session, we will aim to arrive back at The Arsenal Community Hub for 8.30pm at the latest.

Market Road Massive & Simon's 3 Hundo

Mon 30 Aug
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Goodgym Islington returns to Market Road Gardens on a surprisingly dark Bank Holiday Monday, along with a classic group run from the Arsenal Hub.

Simon, John and Ben (first group run with GG Islington- welcome!) ran 2km each way (4km total) across Holloway Road, past the Ringcross Community Centre (home of our weekly cycle delivery missions) and over to Caledonian Road. Frannie from Octopus Community Network had given AA Simon the keys to Market Road Gardens earlier in the day, so all 5 of us (Caitlin and Mali too) let ourselves in.

Our planned task was to continue our long running renovation project of this lovely community garden. Earlier this month, a collection of fruit trees were planted in special grow boxes at the bottom of the park. The surrounding area used to be a small forest of weeds, brambles and vines, which have since been cleared and curated into pathways and wild growing space. Our intention was to clear away most of the overgrown vines, thistles and brambles from the area, ready for children and parents to visit in the near future.

The team did a terrific job, using clippers and gloved hands to clear the weeds and overgrown shrubs over the course of 45 minutes, gathering up many boxes and wheel barrow loads of green waste. After packing up tools into Gertrude, the beautiful old dairy delivery truck (now a tool shed), we parted ways- some on foot, others by bike. A great way to make the most of a Monday evening!

Area Activator Simon's 2nd Year Celebration!

Area Activator Simon will be celebrating 2 years as the Goodgym Islington trainer next Monday after our scheduled group run (task TBC).

We will be meeting up at The Highbury Library on Drayton Park at 8.45pm. Sign up here:
