Rufous helped us move BARK BARK BARK chips

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On Monday evening, Area Activator Simon met with 6 local Goodgymmers (including first timers Bonnie and Florence- welcome!), and Rufous, a lively 10 year old border terrier at Caledonian Road Underground Station. We were all super excited to enjoy Easter Breaks and good times over the next week- trips abroad were planned, time away from classrooms and visits back home to see family- lovely stuff!

Together we walked to Caledonian Park, and met with the wonderful Gail, (who some of us know from Caledonian Park Junior parkrun) by the Tollacre Café and under the beautiful Victorian clock tower. Our objective for the evening was to shovel up as much bark chip as possible over the course of an hour, and to lay it on the new pathways around the woodlands near Market Road. The volunteer team have been really keen to allow this great North London park to be as accessible as possible for visitors during the Spring and Summer months.

Our crew did a smashing job over the course of the evening, and really contributed to this huge task. Well done everyone!

Thai-ght Knit Community at Goodgym Islington

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

6 frequent Goodgym Islington attendees joined a slightly broken Area Activator Simon at The Tollington Arms on Benwell Road last week. A hidden gem for delicious homemade Thai food in the borough!

The GoodGym Islington AGM 2024

We hosted our first proper open meeting together to talk about how Goodgym Islington is going, and to take feedback for future sessions.

Here were some of the key topics of discussion, directed at group runs and community missions in particular:

Monday Group Runs

We agreed that our usual time and set up for Monday group runs seem to work well for those who attend. And the Arsenal Community Hub start point is well suited for exploring the whole borough together. The bag drop and WC facilities are key to establishing a base for group runs. Tasks without these can pose as a barrier to entry for new attendees.

However, we are open to accommodating occasional changes to the schedule, depending on the task.

For example, our Easter group run to the Rose Bowl Youth Centre will be hosted on Tuesday instead to sideline Easter Monday:

https://www.goodgym.org/v3/sessions/group-run-rose-bowl-youth-club-tuesday-session

and our next trip to Elizabeth House Food Hub will be at 6pm to allow for more varied tasks (more deliveries, less clear up), and to help with the regular volunteers:

https://www.goodgym.org/v3/sessions/group-run-elizabeth-house-food-hub-easter-helpers-6pm-start

Favourite Tasks

Some of our favourite tasks in recent times have been:

  • Lifting and shifting tasks!
  • Food bank deliveries (requires a bit of additional admin, but alway good!)
  • Building and constructing for gardens and community centres
  • Youth centres and playgrounds
  • Slow Ways route mapping and reviewing

We are also looking at collaborating for more weekend missions - particularly if we can combine a parkrun excusion too!

On the same subject, we are very open to combining nationwide campaigns as part of our Goodgym sessions. Examples include:

Run and Talk Butterfly Day The Big Plastic Count Race Against Time Relay

Fitness Activities

We are open to including fitness games and core training as part of our Group Run warm ups.

Longer fitness elements (e.g. Emirates Stadium Time Trial) will be publicised in advance of the group run, as a "training session". Always optional, but an incentive for anyone who would like to try it!

Definitely preferred to introduce these before a group run, and not after.

Socials and Excursions

Yes to more socials and excursions!

Suggestions included:

  • a trip to YHA South Downs for parkrun and hiking
  • Visit to Caledonian Park clocktower
  • London Zoo
  • Summer picnic and slacklining
  • Researching for more "Goodgym Islington" specific activities in the borough

Thank You for all involved!

If you have anything to add or suggest, you are very welcome to email Simon directly at:

simonfitzmaurice@goodgym.org

Worm Murder* on the Dancefloor

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

(* No worms actually murdered. It was a close call!)

Area Activator Simon met up with a top crew of Goodgym runners (some hailing from Islington, some hailing from Chamonix, France!) at the Arsenal Community Hub. Together, we engaged with a range of dynamic warm up exercises before running towards The Museum of Homelessness in Finsbury Park. On route, we ran along the nature path next to Gillespie Park, dropping us off at the top of Blackstock Road. We followed a reverse loop of Finsbury parkrun before arriving at our task location (next to Manor House station).

We were greeted by Jess and Matt at the MOH, who had set us up a smashing collection of tasks for the evening. The garden space surrounding the Museum of Homelessness have been maintained by vulnerable and unhoused individuals, and we have agreed to lend a hand with some heavy lifting.

Team 1 picked up spades and shovels, and assisted with digging out a new pathway around the museum. The plan is to build a disabled access pathway from the main drive in Finsbury Park. A huge job to take on, but are happy to help out! Team 2 helped with moving large piles of gravel and cement over to a new pathway by the entrance of The museum. And then Team 3 took a (slightly squeaky) wheelbarrow to collect mulch and compost from a dedicated bin within Finsbury Park, and dropped piles of fertiliser off in the gardens for more planting projects.

We pitched in a solid 40 minutes of graft between us, and our efforts were super appreciated by the small team at MOH. Great job everyone!

Next Monday, we will be visiting Caledonian Park for some bark chip lifting and shifting! Sign up here:

Piccadilly Line Plod with Goodgym Islington and Slow Ways

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Slow Ways is a website launched in 2021 which enables users to plot a route between two settlements in the United Kingdom. The routes are not intended to be the fastest route possible, but rather encourage walkers to rediscover unused footpaths and engage in more leisurely walks.

On Monday evening, Area Activator Simon met with keen runners from a variety of different Goodgym boroughs at the Arsenal Community Hub for a slightly different version of our classic group run. Our objective for the evening was to review a previously submitted "Slow Ways" route listed on the official nationwide pedestrian mapping website. Together, we were planning on running the full course, and to publish feedback on whether we could recommend the route or not.

We ran to Highbury and Islington Underground station, and then ran through Highbury Fields to start the Slow Ways for Highbury and Islington to Wood Green aka (WooHig 2). Bouncing up and down the slopes of North London, we passed the original Emirates Stadium before approaching Arsenal Tube Station. Our map was encouraging us to run through Gillespie Park Nature Reserve- however we made the decision not do due to a lack of lighting. This was highlighted as a consideration for fellow night-time travellers on the Slow Ways website page.

Next stop, Finsbury Park, with new and improved flood lights installed for the community. This made such a difference, and we all felt safe to run through even at night. The famous Harringay Ladder loomed at the bottom of Green Lanes (just beyond the New River Path). This is a well known running segment developed by teammates at London Heathside AC- a 10km challenge that covers the inclines and declines between Green Lanes and Turnpike Lane. Luckily, we were running up the Harringay Passage instead- a lovely cut through corridor that passes through over 21 streets!

Upon reaching Turnpike Lane, we started to see city streets and shops again for the first time- we knew that Wood Green high street was close by. Sure enough, we completed our full approximately 5 mile run outside Wood Green Station- successfully reviewing a Slow Ways. Well done everyone!

To celebrate, our crew enjoyed some delicious cuisine at Ezra's Kitchen along with some much appreciated refreshments. Excellent work!

Working Hard or Garden-ly Working?

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Our Goodgym crew caught up for our 3rd trip to St Mungo's Hilldrop House on a blustery Spring time evening. Area Activator Simon ran with Adam and Kim (who celebrated her 50th good deed this evening- congratulations!) from the Emirates Stadium, and up Pankhurst Road towards the Hilldrop Estate.

Upon our arrival, we met with the residential homeless resource centre help team, and were offered a variety of tools (clippers, brooms, green waste bags and secateurs) to help with our garden maintenance tasks. Between us, we endeavoured to make the main entrance pathway to the centre as welcoming tidy as possible for future clients. We clipped away the messy brambles around the edges of the paths, and snipped through swathes of overgrown grass from the beds. A real transformation throughout the course of the evening. Well done everyone!
