Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
The changeable showery Summertime weather continues on this Monday evening, where Area Activator Simon met with Goodgym runners Luke, Mehmet, Effie and first timer Sophie just outside the Arsenal Community Hub. Between us, we had enjoyed weekends of half marathon training, rainy parkrun events and meeting new babies for the first time! After a dynamic warm up, we set off up Hornsey Rise and Sussex Way towards Timbuktu Adventure Playground.
After a 1.2 mile run, we met with Emily, Dan and task owner Eslam (Thank you for having us) at the entrance to an impressive play area (a large wooden pirate ship structure, with climbing holds, a high swing and trampolines). Our plan for the evening was to use the shovels, forks and rakes provided to turn all of the bark chip around the playground- bringing oxygen to the soil and making the surface as soft and safe as possible for visiting families.
Together, our crew spread out across the play ground- Dan and Mehmet scooping on one side, Effie and Sophie on the other, with Emily raking wherever the ground needed to be evened out. Within 45 minutes (and a bit of a rain shower), almost all of the woodchuck in the play area had been turned out, ready for the staff to see tomorrow morning. Great job everyone!

Camden Report written by Alex Murtough (he/him)
It was Election Eve and all was well.
Camden was aflutter with the sounds of sharpening pencils, ballot-snipping scissors, and huge printers used just once every half-decade to print the 'POLLING STATION' font.
And amidst these sounds of democracy, a group in red was making its gentle way up through Camden and towards Tufnell Park.
Our wonderful regular group of Jackie, John, and Steve had welcomed the equally wonderful Emilie, and we were sharing stories of work, life, and politics as we cut our way through the evening hubbub.
Arriving at the special communal garden areas at Ingestre Community Centre, we were met by the brilliant Emily, Pete, and Sarah, and (under Pete's expert tutelage) we quickly split into Team Cutting-All-Weeds-Completely-Back, Team Water-Dry-Ground-Until-It-FINALLY-Accepts-The-Water, and Team Litter-Pick-Pick.
It was wonderful seeing how much work we can do in 40 minutes when we do it together, and our tasks simply slipped away to being completed.
Thank you, everyone, for a lovely evening, and I really appreciate your work!!
See you soon!

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Faye and Caitlin joined Area Activator Simon for a lovely group run from Arsenal Community Hub, up Sussex Way and over to Caxton House Community Centre. After a dynamic warm up, the three of us ran up an incline (1.5 miles total) to St John's Way, near Archway. Caitlin peeled off at this point, to make her way to Archway Library to pick up a highly requested book that had just become available before closing time! A great way to make the most put of a Goodgym group run!
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Rose, the chief gardening volunteer for Caxton House (and Emily who agreed to meet us at the task). It has been about 6 weeks since our previous visit to Caxton House, and we were amazed by the transformation of this green space. A muddy former flower bed has now been completely dug up, and bricks had been laid out to form a pretty pathway.
Our task for the evening was ton continue the great progress of this pathway. We picked up shovels and spades, and dug up the excess soil from the flower beds. The dirt was then gathered up in builder's sacks, ready for use in other planting projects. Our plan was to level out the beds as evenly as possible, so that the paths can be as tidy as possible for future visitors.
After a solid 50 minutes of digging and shifting, the garden was looking excellent. Together we had filled about 25 bags of excess soil- great job! Ro celebrate, we were given the opportunity to try out some beautifully sweet organic raspberries (grown in site), along with some sherbet strawberries (at the end of their season). Well done everyone!

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
A trio of Goodgym cyclists met at Mildmay Community Centre last night, to help the neighbourhood gardening team with regenerating their planting space.
Emily and Caitlin were led by Dom and Teena of Mildmay to their lovely organic growing space for their foodbank visitors at the back of the centre. Our task for the evening was to move a pile of disassembled wooden decking and long palms from the garden, over to the Islington Council drop off point for wood and lumber. We carefully used heavily padded work gloves and wheelbarrows to direct the awkward objects to the appropriate spot (while avoiding various neighbourhood cats, who were fascinated with what we were up to!). Crowbars and mallets were used to pull away the last of the decking, and we swept up all of the debris into a woodchuck bed to complete a very satisfying task! Well done everyone!
