Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Area Activator Simon met at the Arsenal Community Hub on a chilly (but thankfully dry) Autumn evening, before running up Sussex Way to Sunnyside Community Gardens. Upon his arrival, he met with task organiser and Goodgymmer Eslam who had opened up the Hornsey Rise Kickabout Gardens specially for our visit this evening!
Sally, Alison, Emily and Vaughan were also on hand for smashing evening of community garden renovation- a project set up for sustainable growing on formerly abandoned grounds. Our task was to break down a large pile of donated soil into more manageable chunks (using spades and pickaxes), and depositing it into buckets and wheelbarrows. Then, we moved the soil over to a lovely wildlife pond (made from an old bathtub), and we built some foundations around the tub. Emily took charge of padding the soil down, almost like a muddy sandcastle around the pond!
Within 45 minutes approximately, we had moved almost all of the soil, and had successfully created a strong base for the pond. Wonderful job everyone!

Simon would like to offer 10 Goodgymmers the opportunity to join him for a dynamic warm up and short interval session.
During the evening, recordings for forward momentum, running form and lateral stability (at different paces) will be made, and used to make suggestions for training focus or for footwear choices.

Islington Report written by Emily (She/her)
I arrived at Thornhill Square at 7:16 to find Luke, Sebastian and Mehmet with Anna standing by a verdant flowerbed. Luke claims he arrived early at 7:05, but my sources have not verified the claim. Anna had shown the guys a âcurry plantâ (Helichrysum italicum) whose leaves smell like curry, and I was instructed to rub the leaves myself. Sarah arrived shortly and with all our fingers smelling like curry â though Sarah said it smelled like celeriac - we got on with the tasks assigned to us.
There were a few invasive ash trees in the flowerbed that Anna asked us to get rid of, and some weeding along the edge of a path. Me and Sarah left the guys with the ash trees and went to clear the path. We were joined the guys once they had cleared the trees, and over the course of 45 minutes we filled up an entire wheelbarrow of weeds!
At 8:02 we decided to call it a day. Luke finished the job by pulling up a very large weed that he claimed had taken âhoursâ to pull up. Sebastien emptied the wheelbarrow into the compost and we were finished for the evening.
Anna announced she was âthrilledâ with the job done and I must say even in the dark you could see a difference. She also told us that Thornhill Square Gardens may have recently won Islington in Bloom, but she wasnât sure as nobody was at the ceremony. Well, my independent research has found that Thornhill Square Association did win âBest Parkâ. Well done, Anna and team!

I joined the gang at Caledonian Junior Parkrun as a marshal. There was a good turnout despite the morning rain!
It's the first day of autumn (depending who you ask) so I admired the red leaves on the trees.

Camden Report written by Alex Murtough (he/him)
Our wonderful group of Caitlin, Emily, and Steve (and me) spent our Saturday morning well :)
Amidst early Autumn sun, we helped out our friends (Brooke and Jared) at the American International Church. We loaded a van with (hundreds of) long-forgotten books and recycling, and we made good(gym) use of the human chain as we did.
Racing the van, we took an early afternoon run through the Camden hubbub, arriving just in time to unload everything into the wanting bins at Camden's recycling centre.
Thank you, all, for your work and energy - I had such a great time! And.... these van photos are (I think) some of the best GG photos I've ever seen!
To next time!
