Goodgym Islington are here! What a re-leaf!

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On Monday evening, Area Activator Simon caught up with 7 other Goodgym runners from Islington, Hackney and Harringey over at the Emirates Stadium (avoiding a day of sporadic showers). Many of us had started our advent calendars on the run up to Christmas (in Caitlin's case, she had started 5 advent calendars, along with her housemates!), and are glad to be out for another Goodgym group run before the Christmas break (mark down our Xmas post-run social in your calendar! More details below!). Together, we engaged in a quality warm up on the Emirates slopes, before heading up and over Whistler Street and through Highbury Fields.

We arrived at The Rose Bowl Youth Club in ample time and met with Dawn, the resident coordinator for the centre, who was thrilled to see us. The team at the youth club were busy with Xmas parties and football games in the playground, but were very happy to have a Goodgym trip in for the evening!

Our main task was to clear up tonnes of leaves from the surrounding paths and the entrance ways of the centre, using wheelbarrows, rakes and leaf grabbing claws. Between us, we filled an entire building merchant sack full of leaves (after compacting the foliage down by tramping it all under foot), and dropped any excess leaves in the designated composting point. Five of us successfully dragged this very heavy bag back to the green refuse point at the entrance of the centre- a job that would have been very tough for the regular volunteer team. Smashing work, everyone!

Together, we made our way back across the borough (a 5km round trip), and enjoyed the long slopes back to the Emirates Stadium. Top job all!

Rake it until you make it

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On one of the chilliest nights of Winter so far, 5 superstar Goodgym folks met with Area Activator Simon in the Arsenal Community Hub for our Monday group run across the borough. This week, we planned to run together to Caledonian Park, a beautiful green space just by the Islington/Camden border. After a quality dynamic warm up, we ran a full mile together up Mackenzie Road, past Market Road Gardens and over to the famous Caledonian Park clock tower.

Upon our arrival, we met with Miriam, the main volunteer coordinator for the park (and frequent Caledonian Park junior parkrun event organiser) outside the Tolpuddle Café. She was in the park halls for a choir rehearsal, but was happy to bring rakes and leaf grabbers for tonight's task. Our plan was to clear a full pathway towards the south of the park- a nature walkway that Goodgym Islington had helped with building in the past. The fallen leaves had completely hidden this lovely pathway, so our team pitched in a solid 45 minutes of energetic raking to bring the space back to normal. We were able to complete the objective by 8pm exactly- a job well done!

Congratulations everyone!

How many Goodgymmers does it take to plant some light bulbs?

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Area Activator Simon met up with a bumper team of 11 Goodgymmers at Arsenal Community Hub last night (including first timers Daniel and Maggie- welcome to you both!). After a full dynamic warm up on the Emirates Stadium slopes, we ran together (with Adam following us on his bike) over to the wonderful Thornhill Square Gardens (about 1.4 miles total, along Mackenzie Road).

After distributing head torches and gardening gloves, we met up with Anna, one of the residential gardening champions of Thornhill Square. Our task for the evening was to dig up an abundance of holes within the rose bushes of this public green space with forks, spades and hand trowels. Once an 8 inch hole had been dug, we would fill the holes with about10 new narcissus bulbs each.

Daniel and Louise took it in turns to bring wood chip to to spread across these newly cultivated beds, to keep these little bulbs safe from wandering dogs and hungry birds over the Winter months. Sarah and Patricia did a smashing job of preparing their own gardening spot, around a dead head fence created during one of our previous Goodgym Islington group runs earlier this year!

After about 40 minutes of digging, planting, wheel barrowing and bark spreading, we packed up out tools back in the community shed in the centre of the park, and bode Anna farewell until next time. Hopefully we can return to see our bulbs growing in Spring! We completed our session with a trip to The Swimmer, at The Grafton Arms for our November social, enjoying refreshments and delicious food on a gorgeous autumnal evening. Well done everyone!

Working the Night Shift at the Museum of Homelessness

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Goodgym Islington are thrilled to visit a new organisation in the borough- The Museum of Homelessness in Finsbury Park (set up by Arbor Projects).

https://museumofhomelessness.org/

On Monday evening, Area Activator Simon met up with a top crew of Goodgym runners at the Arsenal Community Hub (including first timers Laura and Lucy- welcome!), staying out of the cold in the nice warm reception area. After a chat and bag drop, we performed a dynamic warm up towards the stadium concourse, and ran the 1.6 mile journey towards Manor House Lodge (zig-zagging through quiet low traffic zones to avoid busy pavements).

Upon our arrival, we met with Ellie and Harry (and a 9 month old Lurcher cross puppy called Keith) at the entrance of the impressive Victorian park lodge building. Wheelbarrows, spades, buckets and gloves were all on hand ready for our evening task.

The Museum of Homelessness is a community outreach project for local park users (housed or unhoused) that is due to open in 2024. As part of the hub, a disused garden space is currently being developed by volunteers and users of the homelessness centre. Goodgym Islington have come down this evening to lend a hand with some of the heavy lifting!

Team 1 (those with effective head torches and clip lights) took hold of wheelbarrows and buckets to collect large piles of fresh wood chip from the North East side of Finsbury Park, depositing the chippings along a newly resurrected pathway in the Museum gardens. Team 2 (using our industrial work lights) helped with digging out the rest of the pathway, edging the overgrown grass verges, laying down compostable cardboard and shoveling wood chip on top. Within 45 minutes, we had successfully laid out an entire pathway, and ferried over 6 full wheelbarrows of chippings into the new gardens. Well done everyone!

To complete an excellent evening, our group split up between walkers and cyclists, and runners joining AA Simon for a jog back the Emirates Stadium via Sobell Road (a tidy loop around the borough). We decided to keep our headtorches on hand, and the enjoy a fun downhill run through Finsbury Park in the dark (a rare opportunity- the space is typically packed!), before continuing over to the stadium (approx 1.4 miles). Top stuff!

A cowslip up led us to Myrtle Woods

Liverpool Report written by Sallyann Hardwick

A song for this evening by our resident wordsmith Bekah

Be our guest, be our guest

Put our pickers to the test

Tie a bin bag round your hoop, cheree

& we'll provide the rest

How quickly can a group of Goodgymers respond to change......

Monday evening and our task tonight was to head over to Everton Park to plant some cowslips. Ema our wonderful area activator couldn't make the task tonight but she had set the task up - organised our meeting point, and liaised with our guest Goodgymer Caitlin to ensure she knew where we were meeting.

Our Monday meeting point for runners is at 6.30 - often runners will meet a couple miles away to run to the meeting point to get a few more miles on their trainers and tonight Ellie was meeting us at the task at 7. All sorted. Caitlin and Bekah meeting us at the meeting point Heetu Laura and Sallyann running to the meeting point picking up Caitlin and Bekah and we would run to the task and meet up with Ellie and John the task owner. All sorted...

Sadly John was unavoidably delayed and contacted Ema who then contacted Sallyann it was just after 6 - so in true Anneka Rice style (she wishes) Sallyann was running along talking with Ema on the phone - Heetu and Laura came up with ideas on how to change things around. Ema then set everything up - John was contacted and we will return to Everton another night, Ellie was contacted and diverted to pick up litter pickers and bags and gloves - 15 minutes later at 6.30 Ellie was on route to get the litter pickers and Bekah had come up with a plan of where we could litter pick.. but first we had better get the group run in.

Actually looking at the photo evidence thats not quite true....Caitlin was visiting from Islington so first we spent time chatting - we are very good at chatting. THEN we did a group run - we took Caitlin on a two cathedrals tour - we went first to the Catholic cathedral up the steps where the regular Shiverpool tour was out showing tourists around in their theatrical way. Meawhile we gave Caitlin some of our own local knowledge about the area. We then went along Hope Street and to the Anglican cathedral - a run through the graveyard as it was just getting dark - stopping for a look at Kitty Wilkinson's grave (and a short history lesson) and then on to the chalybeate spring. A run back to the suitcases meeting point and our guardian angel of the task arrived in the shape of Ellie and a bag of litter pickers and hoops.

A few weeks ago we were going to do a litter pick on Myrtle Street with Litter Clear Volunteers and due to extreme weather it had to be cancelled so thanks to Bekah off we went and litter picked in the strip of woodland on Myrtle Street - in a short space of time we had six bags and a broken metal drawer. A lady passed us and thanked us with such passion saying how she walked here every day and was so saddened by the litter.

We didnt get to plant cowlsips this week (but we will soon) but what we did was showed what could be done by a group of people who were willing to work together and open to changing plans so quickly.

Shout outs to Ema for organising remotely, Heetu for carrying lights in her back pack determinedly for what amounted to 6 miles im total ( for the planting task that didnt happen) Bekah for backmarkimg and ensuring everyone was safe when running, Laura for photography, Ellie for saving the day and picking up the litter pickers, Caitlin for being such a good sport open to change and carrying bags after a busy working day with little time for food and Sallyann for pretending to be Anneka Rice.
