Trim and tidy, come rain but fine

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Kingston upon Thames runner

The forecast for today's trim and tidy task wasn't favourable but that didn't stop the Goodgym volunteers heading to Jubilee Square to finish off the clearance of the unwanted weeds which was started the week before.

A downpour greeted us on arrival but once that cleared we got stuck in, and were joined mid task by a community volunteer.

Sadly Danni was unwell last minute, so the harvest of rhubarb will have to wait until next week. But even with just three pairs of hands and a few basic tools we had the job wrapped up within the hour. Filling 2 bags with 'fat hen' and dead weeds and with clearing quite a bit of litter.

Thursdays from 6-7pm - why not stop by and support New Malden Town Centre Partnership with maintaining this pollinators paradise.

Rolling with it

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Emma Crowe

Many hands certainly made light work on Tuesday night with our Group run taking 11 Goodgymers to Save the World Club.

The local charity were in desperate need of some serious manpower to help sort and clear their Berrylands site - which is full of pre-loved items waiting to be resold - before their lease ends in a few days time.

Tariq had a long list of manual jobs for us and I can confidently say we powered through them! Lifting huge wooden boards into their van, clearing garages, loading up a skip and moving furniture including an awkwardly shaped stage and several rolls of heavy carpet and astroturf.

For a group who usually boast about their leg power, this task was quite a challenge, requiring some sheer strength! But Petra, Nathan and Dave had that in bucket loads. And of course with everyone’s enthusiasm and a few human chains, we got loads done. It was great to have Nina join us on her first task and congratulations to Doris, who completed her 10th Goodgym task.

At the end there was a treat in store, as we all got to enjoy a refreshing alcohol-free beer, courtesy of Goodgym partner Athletic Brewing Co. Cheers!

Fat hen, or not

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Kingston upon Thames runner

Every week there's something different to do and today was fat hen pulling! A common weed that spreads quickly... but after clearing this from a whole section by hand it seems we removed another in error (!), but it certainly looked tidier by the time we were done.

A few hands make light work and this week's reward was garlic chives, freshly harvested by YuWing from the vegetable garden - just need to find the pancake mixture recipe.

Thursdays from 6-7pm - why not stop by and support New Malden Town Centre Partnership with maintaining this pollinators paradise.

What a lot of lolly!

Kingston upon Thames Report written by Rachel White

What a scorcher! It was a warm run up the hill to Tolworth Recreation Centre to meet Susan at the Kingston Pantry. Nathan and Dave took the lead and Claire and Rachel were honorary back markers on the run.

We met Jana,Tom, Emily and Sabir there and got straight to work. We pulled all the items off the shelves and gave them a thorough wipe down making sure we gave it a really good deep clean. Dave tackled the bread bins whilst Tom, Nathan and Jana wiped down the fridge in the walk in pantry. Claire, Rachel and Emily cracked on with the tins.

It was hot even with the fans blowing but it gave us a good workout and felt slightly like a sauna which I'm told is very good for you. Thankfully Susan brought out some ice lollies to help us cool down - delicious, thank you!

Whilst we were there we explored the new area where Growbaby are expanding into. They are currently at the painting stage but there's lots of potential with the room. Hopefully we can help them with the set up - keep your eyes on the calendar!

After our task was complete we headed to The Antelope for some refreshments. Great food and great company.

Great work to everyone that signed up - we are signed up to head back in three weeks for the next deep clean. See you then!
