Quite an evening for our task, unfortunately everything changed at the last minute. We had to cancel our Orchard watering due to the event in Blackweir, for the first time.

It was a busy evening in Cardiff tonight, as we had Katy Perry in the castle and Lewis Capaldi in Blackweir Fields (just up the path)

Even with all of this activity, and last minute changes, we still met up and got out for some good. Our change had us running up to The Salvation Army Hostel for young people, with an option to work inside or out.... The weather was looking changeable...

Once we were all there, Michael took the crew inside to help carry out the items to build.

Our tasks, to build.....

• 3 Planters
• 1 Round garden picnic bench
• 5 large boxes to carry in total.

Let's go go go

We were split into 4 teams of two, 6 on the raised planters. The final 2 were to do as much as possible with the bench, but this wasn't going to be finished in one 30 minute session.

He weather stayed dry, so we stayed outside enjoying the evening air.

Time's up, let's get the photo and head back. It was a great jog back, as thousands were descending on Cardiff for the night. We had cheers from the crowds as if we were part of a race.

Some of our weirder discussions on the way back, as acid reflux came up. The fact that there are 60 Sphincter muscles in the human body, and they control a lot more than you think.....

A new week and new weather, so we found a task to make the most of the rain.

5 goodgymers took on the hill to help out at Northlands, young person homeless hostel.

The staff have been stripping some of the land surrounding the hostel, taking it back to soil. As always though, a few plants pop up where you don't want them, and so the call to goodgym.

Michael, always happy to help, led the team to remove those unwanted plants and rake over the soil.

Lew, Jonathan and Emily went straight to the Loppers to take on the plants.

And suddenly we had Flo joining us, as the first part of cutting was completed, it was time for the rakes.

The team did a great job of sharing the jobs, from cutting to raking and clearing the greens into the waste bag.

Michael and Emily had already worked those guns, carrying a half full waste bag up from the bin shed.

Now as the evening continued, that bag was topped to full. So Lew dragged it out of the way.

A slight break in the task as we all debated the yellow capped pipe.... And what it could possibly be.

A bomb? Gas? Part of a yellow submarine???

As we got to the end, all hot and sweaty from a good workout, light rain started and the seeds were shared out....

It was a mix of UK-native wildflower seeds, everything you need and more to form a perfect patch of wildflowers to attract birds, bees, butterflies and insects.

The mix supports bees and butterflies, as well as other insects attractive to wild birds through the summer. The addition of a variety of grain-bearing plants such as linseed, sunflower and quinoa provide an important food source for wild birds through the winter.

Once everything had been spread, it was time to get our group photo and head back to the City Centre.

We will keep an eye on the patch and update on the growing show.....

Unsure about the weather only the brave few willing to take the risk.

Tonight's slightly longer task up the hill to help the Salvation Army hostel with their rewilding project.

In order to get sowing the new seed mixes, for wildlife as well as looking beautiful, we had the task of removing the brambles.

Darren, David and Lucy got straight to the raised areas facing the roads and pavement to attack those brambles.

Whilst Emma and Fiona were given the shears to give a good ol' Chelsea chop to the greenery towards the back of the building.

There will be additional volunteers next week to clear the grass ready for the wild flower sowing.

One last task for the group before heading back, Michael had put down a weed suppression fabric several weeks earlier and now it was time to remove it. It should have been a simple folding task, but us goodgymers love a bit of fun. It soon became a rendition of the parachute game, and then a ball was added for extra fun.

Time to run back, that unwanted vegetation has been lifted, lifted, lifted We could be lifted from the shadows, lifted.

HUGE Welcome / CROESO

After welcoming the crew at the start point, and setting off the walking group, Michael led the joggers up to task.... All Hill and chatting.

We skipped the queue and went straight to task tonight, fighting to miss the worst of the rain. Our mammoth task, The Salvation Army, young person hostel was having a clear out. Bed bases, fridges, microwaves and sofas... All broken and needing to go.

Could we CAERPHILLY fit them all in the big yellow SKIP.

All hands gloved up, Michael’s freshly laundered gloves provided for all. Everyone got to work, picking, carrying and then filling the skip. Some items needed breaking down... Is that a job for Jake? According to “little boy Jonnie” it may need a real man. However, Lucy was having none of this, even after coming up with Jonnies new nickname for the night. Between them, the crew managed to smash a double bed base and a sofa. Filling the skip to the brim (see photos for their amazing workout)

Walkers arrived during the mayhem and skipped their way through to the nature task. The hostel had found some waste whilst clearing for a new woodland and wildlife garden, it gets sunlight first thing and will be an amazing space for the residents in summer. But to make the space, several overgrown and over bearing buddlejas had to be removed. Whilst they are good sources of nectar for butterflies, the plan is to seed the space with lots more native mixes providing nectar and seeds for a selection of wildlife throughout the year. The volunteers were tasked with taking the cut down branches and stems, to create a dead hedge against the wall of the garden entrance. This would have climbing plants eventually planted, and provide somewhere safe for birds, insects, voles and maybe a hedgehog or two.

As soon as the skip was nearing its capacity, Michael encouraged some volunteers to join the hedge building.

Tasks completed, one last trip to skip for the group photo.

Only our second time helping out at Colum Road, the age assessment hostel in Cardiff. On what had been forecast as a possibly very wet evening, we were very happily surprised to have the rain wait until our task and run were over.

8 GoodGymers met at Glassworks, on Wharton Street. Michael planned a run that would still allow for a run close to 5km total, there and back, even though the task location was pretty close by.

We had a lovely jog to the task, chatting to each other about recent events, parties and gatherings.

After 20 minutes, we arrived at the task location. Michael had already been here once today, as he dropped down some tools for the team to use from his full time job with The Salvation Army. They were met by Tari, his beaming friendly smile welcoming them into the hostel.

Our task tonight had a few different jobs,

• Weed the gravel out back
• Tidy up the leaf fall
• Remove the Christmas lights we put on the railings last visit
• Wipe down the tables and chairs
• Cut down the buddleja
• Weed the front of the building

Our eager volunteers had no problem smashing out the tasks, working methodically through the list. Ruth and Lucy were top of the group for fun tonight with the cordless leaf blower.

Once the back yard was complete, everyone was sent out front to help cut down the pieces of buddleja to fit in the garden waste bag. Unfortunately, the green bin was still full at the hostel, so some last minute plans were put into place.

30 minutes soon went by, and after a group photo taken by Tari, it was time to head back.

Pancake pans paused on a quiet night, four willing hands chose sheers over light.

Michael took aim at the bramble with gusto and grin, he wrestled the root till the stubborn stump gave in.

Dylan and Rosie picked ivy off stone and wall, they stripped every tendril, they answered the call.

Jake ferried the load in a trusty barrow, back and forth he went, quick as an arrow.

At the venue on North Road the task was complete, Northlands Hostel in Maindy: beds of clean earth, with walls neat and sweet.

The stump called “middle finger” met a final goodbye, and leaves made their exit beneath a dull sky.

Tools were returned and the wheelbarrow sighed, we left with lighter steps and more space outside.
