Roundabout Ltd

We are South Yorkshire's youth homeless charity providing shelter, support and life skills to young people aged 16-24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Every day Roundabout supports over 250 young people living in accommodation either provided by or supported by our charity. We have a new hostel and provide four key services delivering comprehensive programmes of training, involvement and empowerment which help to break the cycle of homelessness and develop long term independent living skills.

17 GoodGymers have supported Roundabout Ltd with 6 tasks.

Going Roundabout The Houses

Monday 26th February

Written by James Smith

On this week's GoodGym group run our task was to deliver leaflets for Roundabout, promoting two events they have coming up. One leaflet was advertising the Night Owl event wherein people sleep out at Hillsborough and the other was information about the Night At The Musicals drive in cinema event at Meadowhall. Both are to raise money for and awareness of the Roundabout youth homeless charity. We were met by delightful Denise who distributed bags of both leaflets to us and some proposed route maps. As there were only 3 of us tonight we decided that we would focus on a single route together. We agreed to meet Denise back at the Showroom after distribution to report on how we got on, then set off on our merry way.

The map we chose was Route A (for GoodGym's A team) directly behind the station. We trotted our way through the station and up the Steel Steps of Sheaf Valley Park. On the way up the steps we became curious as to the total number of them, but only started counting from about half way up. We estimated that there are a total of 99, based on the number of steps in each set. If anyone wants to correct us on this, please do! When we reached to top of the amphitheatre we had a brief moment to catch our breath and take in the resplendent view of Sheffield. Taking advantage of this pause we formulated a rough plan of how we were going to divvy up the delivering duties. Two of us would work down one side of a road and one on the other, whichever team reaching the end of the street first doubling back to meet the others.

We discovered a few interesting details during our deliveries tonight... one, the houses on one side of the street have winding long drives leading to huge hidden houses... many of which seem to like also having hidden letterboxes! The second, Taj is a very speedy leafletter. And the third, Annie is not a fan of yappy dogs (but who is?!).

The route we managed to cover for Denise was Norfolk Rd, the top third of Granville Rd, Ingram Rd, Tylney Rd, Seabrook Rd, Stafford Rd, Glencoe Rd and part of the B6071.

After completing our paper route we geared up for some high speed egg and spoon racing. In lieu of delicate eggs we had a couple of satsumas and a hardened lemon. Our race was to take place at the entrance to Norfolk Park. We ran from one side of the entryway to the other, around a bollard and back. It came down to a photo finish, but we were all winners tonight (or just say James won).

Following this excitement we had the come down of the run down. We debriefed Denise back at the Showroom and then blocked the path of many cinema goers whilst stretching indoors.

Leafletting to spread the word for Roundabout - Ending youth homelessness

Monday 16th October 2023

Written by Tom Mutton

We had 2 new runners tonight.

BIG welcome to:

Ines David

Give them a woop, a hola and a cheer!

Tonights task was a leafleting task for the Youth Homelessness charity Roundabout.

We met the lovely Emily at The Showroom who was armed with leaflets for the upcoming events planned to raise money and awareness of the charity and it's work.

We got straight to it, starting the drop a Cemetery Road, heading uphill!

During the drop we managed to cover a large area covering:

  • Cemetery Road
  • Psalter Lane
  • Kingfield Road
  • St Andrews Road

It was a lovely 'crisp' evening and leafleting was a great way of getting to know roads, areas and houses you would otherwise pass by without taking in.

We hope Ines and David enjoyed their first sessions and will be back on another Mon eve group run in the future!

Happy Running :)

Swings and Roundabouts

Monday 29th August 2022

Written by James Smith

A leafleting task on a bank holiday, who'll turn up for this?! Well, quite a few dedicated folk apparently. This week we were delivering leaflets for Roundabout, a local youth housing charity. They're having a chocfest (https://www.yorkshirechocolatefestival.com/) to raise funds in the autumn and are trying to spread the word around Sheffield. For this they needed GoodGym's collective helping hands!

We had 5 mapped routes provided to us to follow. Upon close inspection of these routes it was collectively decided that it would be best for us to split up into two teams working on just one of the circular planned routes, working in tandem. This decision was taken because a lot of the proposed routes didn't cover very many residential areas, the land being instead occupied by commercial premises. The chosen route would take all of us about an hour to complete. Perfecto!

En route we found, as usual for many Sheffield houses, that many didn't have letterboxes on their front doors, requiring people to walk down alleyways to back doors. We encountered several barking dogs, foreboding alleyways, interesting curious notices and friendly residents on our group paper-round.

Upon completing our route, we regrouped and set off back down the hill to the amphitheater for extra fitness. This was a last minute, from the top of my head, addition as I foresaw our leafleting taking up all of our time. We used the large steps to complete reps of 10 box jumps (or step-ups), 10 push-ups and 10 tricep dips, before running the short distance back through the station to the Showroom. Here we stretched off, did announcements and popped inside for refreshments or popped off.

We felt like we'd helped, in a roundabout way!

Steel City Magnolia or a tunnocks of paint

Monday 21st December 2020

Written by Celine (she/her or they/them)

5 Sheffield Goodgym runners headed out to Parsons Cross over 4 days to redecorate a property for the Roundabout homelessness charity. Much painting was done, goodgym shirts looked like winter starry nights speckled with magnolia paint. All aided by bourbon biscuits, Tunnocks wafers, countless cups of tea and great spirit.
