Keeping Arbourthorne Primary School well watered

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

Well, well, well, on the HOTEST day of the year we thought why not have a task at the TOP of Sheffield..

Well it was worth it!

The lovely Angela met us on site and let us in and showed us the fantastic grounds of the school and all the hard work that has been going on there to make it such a beautiful space for the pupils and the community.

Once we had had a snack of the fresh cherries on the trees and had a cup of water and some homemade flapjack we got to the tasks at hand. This week we were understandably watering the plants in the poly tunnel and also spreading some wood chip around the younger trees to help them get established.

What a wonderful space this is and it was a pleasure being able to help with its ongoing development.

We can't wait until the next time!

A clean sweep on the Sustrans National Cycle Network

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

On a chilly and windy Mon eve we set off from our home of The Showroom cinema via the Five Weirs Walk route to meet with Gerry from Sustrans.

Gerry met us on site, the other side of the Spider's Bridge with tools and other Sustrans volunteers.

Our task was to clear litter and other detritus from a section of the National Cycle Network along the Five Weirs Walk route.

We got straight to it, picking litter, sweeping and scraping debris and bagging it up ready for the council to collect at a later date.

After a good session the patch was looking much better.

As we said our goodbyes Generous Gerry gave us some delicious homemade parkin to give us some energy for the return leg.

Until next time, happy running :)

Uphill Picking!

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

A huge GG SHF welcome to new runner Gary who joined us this week from Kelham Island. We hope you had a good time and will be back for more soon Gary, great to meet you.

With Karen away this week we met with MARVELOUS MALCOLM who met us on site in Burngreave with pickers, bags and hoops at the ready.

We got tooled up and headed initially downhill on the right hand side of Kilton Hill, collecting cans separately so they can be recycled. There was plenty to go at with a lot of litter that looked like it had been there for quite some time.

Once we got to the bottom, we headed straight to the top Beatles Helter Skelter style and even got thanked by a passing local resident taxi driver who stopped to thank us and show his appreciation which is always nice to get.

At the top of the hill we got bags tied up and left next to a public bin ready for collection.

We said our goodbyes to Malcolm and thanked him for his time and also brief Geography lesson of Sheffield.

Until next time, happy running :)
