“Get in the hole”

Monday 27th November 2023

Written by Steven Hitcham

This evening we returned to Hayden Court Retirement Home for the first time for quite a while.

A big welcome to Paula who was doing her first GoodGym deed!

We had a games evening lined up, the first half being Boccia and the second half being New Age Kurling.

There were 9 residents and 9 GoodGymers, so we mixed up and had two teams of 9.

The red team took the honours at Boccia, winning 4-2 but the blue team took revenge at New Age Kurling, winning 5-1.

It really was a great evening with brilliant company.

A game for all ages

Monday 30th January 2023

Written by Steven Hitcham

This week's Group Run was a visit to Hayden Court retirement home to play some sports games with some of their tenants.

We started with some Foam Frisbee as a warm up, followed by Boccia and New Age Kurling.

I guess I have to mention after a 3-3 draw in Boccia, the red team won New Age Kurling 4-2.

The tenants really appreciated our company and it was a really fun evening.

Well done to Sam who has now completed 10 good deeds.

We said “Hey” at the den

Monday 18th October 2021

Written by Steven Hitcham

Tonight's task was a visit to the retirement home of Hayden Court do check in on the residents to see how they are all doing.

A big welcome to Nicole who was taking part in her first GoodGym encounter.

On arrival at Hayden Court we split into to groups and knocked on the flat doors just to see how everyone is.

They were most grateful for us doing so and a very satisfying task.

The evening was finished off with a nice trip to the pub!

We're missing and thinking of you........

Sunday 29th March 2020

Written by Paul Stephens

Katy and Bill came up with the great idea of sending a postcard to all of the older people's homes that we've visited with GoodGym Norwich.

We worked out there were 10 altogether so the following all had a personal postcard/letter of love and good will sent to them on behalf of GoodGym Norwich.

  • Redmayne View - Katy
  • Bowthorpe Care Village - Bill
  • Sydney House - Mel
  • Springdale - Jennifer
  • Hayden Court - Catherine
  • Barley Court - Cheska
  • Marion Road Day Centre - Bobby
  • Ellacombe - Hayley
  • Green Lane View - Hitch and Emma
  • Violet Elvin Court - Paul

A little note from Paul's postcard below:

I sent a card to the staff and residents at a care home where we've been several times before. I was there a few weeks ago and won a box of chocolates in a game of bingo! The ladies there like a good time hence the card Party, Party, Party!

A plank in 69 then we kurled one out

Monday 18th February 2019

Written by Steven Hitcham

There was a plank involved and there was a 69 involved... so you better read this whole run report to see what on earth I'm talking about!

We started off by giving Frances a big welcome on her 1st GoodGym outing.

Several of tonight's GoodGymers completed the Valentine's 10km yesterday so we had a catch up on that with some achieving PB's - AMAZING!

Tonight's task was to visit Hayden Court Sheltered Housing Scheme to clean resident's cooker hoods and ovens as well as communal areas. This is the point you're probably getting a little disturbed at the thought of 69 coming into the equation?

We only has 1 mile each-way to do this evening, when we arrived, one of the residents, Joyce greeted us and had a list of the flat numbers that needed cleaning. We did groups of 4 for the 5 flats and then the rest targeted the communal areas.

It was a bit like an auction, I said the flat number and then those who wanted it put their hands up. 103, 79, 69, 59... so yes one of the flat numbers was 69, there were no inappropriate positions (apart from the plank).

Each group finished at different times and we regrouped in the communal lounge when finished. After the 1st 2-3 group had finished we did a plank challenge with the prize being the final chocolate brownie and the accolade when to Liz K for destroying the rest of us.

We then got the New Age Kurling set for a quick few games, with the Emerson sisters kurling one out against each other.

After all of that entertainment we headed back via Chapelfield Gardens for a quick sprint session before several of us embarked on a trip to the pub for some grub.

Next week is a longer run as we are visiting Redmayne View for a board games night with some soup. For anyone not wanting to run the whole distance you could meet us at the North Walsham Road roundabout on the ring road at 7pm.

Lunging around the chapelfield tree, let the GoodGym spirit ring; later we'll have some of Calum's brownie and we'll do some stretching

Monday 9th April 2018

Written by Steven Hitcham

If the pun confuses you, look up 'Rockin Around the Christmas Tree'!

Another great turnout tonight and we welcomed 2 new lovely runners in Rachel and Susan. Apologies if I forgot to mention there would be a fitness session later on, I hope it didn't come as too much of a surprise hehe.

Also great to see some returning faces :-)

Thanks to Katy for being back runner this week.

On the cards tonight was a visit to Hayden Court, which is a Sheltered Housing Scheme for the elderly. There were several jobs to do including, cleaning a residents cooking hood, sweeping out the garage, cleaning the fire exit stair well, cleaning the skirting boards and the toilets.

It was a bit of a maze to start with, I'm just glad we didn't lose anyone.

At one point I thought we were going to make more of a mess than we started with as Graham's bucket had a hole in it... which we didn't notice until AFTER we got to the top of the stairs haha.

Once we finished we went outside for a group photo... can you notice the 2 masks though???

On the way back we stopped for some push-ups and mountain climbers... as you do. Somehow we ended up in Chapelfield Gardens so we were obliged to do a little sprint effort plus a mini circuit.

We did a little duck walk across the pedestrian crossing going back to The Forum, not sure what the people in the car were thinking as they let us cross!

Then it was time to try Calum's homemade chocolate orange brownies... OMG they were good and so moist - sorry Catherine!

10 of us went for a little social down the pub afterwards so all in all a very splendid evening.

Next week we are planting hanging baskets at The Great Hospital.
