Syca-more or less!

Norwich Report written by Ian Gostling

Tonight 11 GoodGymer's ran or cycled 4km to support Aslake Growers Community Garden.

With a lot of recent rain there were plenty of overgrown areas than needed some attention. We split into groups around the site to pull up any weeds and unwanted plants.

The sycamore had become particularly invasive, growing to heights over 2 metres so Alina took on the task of cutting it back with loppers and a saw.

The raised beds were given a thorough tidy up, with more soil added and sifted ready for planting.

And the perimeter bank of the building was completely cleaned up, pleasing some GoodGymer's who were able to work at waist height without any back aches!

Shout out to Katy and Bill who brought with them freshly picked gooseberries for us all to take home, along with some black currants and cucumbers from the community garden. Tuck in everyone!

Take your Pic-nic!

Norwich Report written by Ian Gostling

Tonight 18 GoodGymer's ran or cycled 6km to Mousehold Heath.

We returned to this 140 acre heathland to continue the conservation work improving the biodiversity of this historical part of Norwich.

Armed with gloves and forks we cleared two large areas of bracken, allowing the underlying heather and grass to continue to grow.

Kudos to Ed and Ana who completed their first good deeds, and a BIG shout out to Sarah for her 50th good deed tonight!

Despite the summer rain, we ended the evening with a picnic in the nearby bandstand for more 7th birthday celebrations of GoodGym Norwich!

Hedge your bets

Norwich Report written by Ian Gostling

Tonight 8 GoodGymer's ran 6km to West Earlham Community Centre, a charity organisation which supports young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods to help gain access to higher education, employment and work-based mentoring.

We were tasked with weeding flowerbeds and trimming hedges on a bright warm evening. Armed with sheers, Stephen quickly transformed the hedge out the front, and continued along the wall of the building at the back.

While the rest of the group were busy clearing weeds out the front, with refreshments kindly provided by Shannon and the team, talk soon turned onto who might win the Euro's this year!?

One hour flew by, so we bagged everything up, leaving the venue looking clean an tidy.

Raising the dead(wood)

Norwich Report written by Ian Gostling

Tonight 12 GoodGymer's ran or cycled 4km to Aslake Community Growers.

We returned to the venue after some time away, and it was great to get stuck into a range of tasks.

One group began weeding and clearing an area outside the greenhouse.

A second group took a large number of seeds and got to work potting them into separate pots and attaching a label of exotic names such as 'Zinna Jazz'.

And a third group took on the task of building up raised beds. Armed with a drill, some saws and a box of screws, they used some old pieces of wood to attach an additional frame to the beds that need deeper soil.

1 hour flew by and everyone was pleased with a satisfied evenings work. We will be returning next month to continue supporting this lovely venue.

And also a HUGE shout out to Stephen⁨ for completing his 3 Peaks challenge at the weekend!!

Sun(flower)set Boulevard

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

This was our first evening visit to Waterloo Park for quite some time, to support the Friends of Waterloo Park with the gardens that they manage.

Jean and her team were there to greet us with all of the tools needed for the task.

That said task was to clear most of an overgrown flower bed, so that the local school can visit and plant sun flower seeds. We'll be sure to arrange a visit later in the year to see them.

After some lovely refreshments kindly provided by FoWP, we headed... to the pub for a social.
