A mound of wild dreams

Sunday 4th June 2023

Written by Ed Moore

Ed came out to help Alex and a group of residents move the rubble of dirt to create a mound for wildflowers to grow in the future. This was the third part of this task, but Alex reckons another 20 minutes of work between 1-2 people. Other tasks will come around.

Creating wildflower mound at Alberta Estate - Part 2

Thursday 25th May 2023

Written by Olive (she/her)

We have continued moving the rubble with the help of Jo, Gemma, Olive and Alex. We cleared all the rubbles, topped-up the mound, but it needs a bit more TLC before planting, which would be another mission.

Creating a wildflower mound at Alberta Estate

Sunday 14th May 2023

Written by Daryl Shaw (he/him)

Lindy, Ed, Paulin, and Daryl met up on a sunny Sunday morning to help the residents of Alberta Estate create a wildflower mound in their communal garden. The task involved digging up the top layer of grass and soil (which will be added back to the wildflower mound) from where Alex had marked out. Then we formed two chains to move the larger pieces of rubble to form the base of the mound before topping off with the remaining rubble.

We'll be back on the evening of Thursday 25th May to finish off the task. Sign up for the follow up mission

Putting the roses 🌹 to bed

Saturday 11th February 2023

Written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

It was Lily's first GoodGym as she met Daryl, Gemma and Sam from GoodGym at Alberta Communal Garden to trim back and dig up roses and weeds from a bed in the middle of the garden, which will become grass. Alex and Peter were there to help out and supervise the task as we needed a few techniques and guidance to get the rooted plants out.

After an hour of hard work, we managed to get all the roses and almost all weeds out before we raked it over.

We can't wait to go back to help out with some more tasks as the project develops further.

Concrete job everyone and not a slab to the face 😳

Sunday 8th January 2023

Written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

On a sunny Sunday morning, eight GoodGymers came out braving the cold and earlier rainy weather to help re-landscape Alberta Communal Garden as Peter had planned for us to take up a row of concrete slabs as the path was too wide and they needed space of the trees to grow.

In two different teams, we got a system going of using crowbars and shovels to lift up the concrete slabs before another two people came along to pick them up and take them to the trolley where Elizabeth, Linda and Sam gently put them in piles away from the task and stored to one side for another task in the future.

After 45 minutes, we were done with the main task as we took out 55 slabs from the first row. Thus, with the last 15 minutes we filled in the gaps with mulch and anything from nearby.

Blood, sweat and woodchip

Sunday 26th June 2022

Written by Emma McNally

I was joined by Sophie and Ed today at Alberta Estate Communal Gardens on a lovely sunny Sunday morning. We met Alex who informed us of our task which involved moving a huge delivery of woodchip to a corner of the garden. It was a big task as there were a good few tonnes of the chip to be moved. We powered on through and managed to get all the woodchip moved and even had a chance to cover some of the beds in the woodchip to prevent weeds from growing and improve the soil quality. Our reward at the end was picking some delicious berries they had been growing on the estate!!
