Rooting out the bugs

Bexley Report written by Sarah W

It's not often that GoodGym is asked to go out and look for fairies, but there's a first for everything!

Discover Welling had invited us to test their augmented virtual reality trails, created using a new app called Love Exploring.

As an 'anytime task' GoodGymers could do it as and when they wanted, before the deadline.

Kam was the first to give it a go, finding a few virtual reality tree fairies 🧚‍♀️, then giving feedback to Discover Welling via an online form.

The rest of us decided to meet up and try the trails together. Between us we found not only VR tree fairies, but various VR bugs too, including a giant - and rather scary - ladybird 🐞.

We loved the concept but the Love Exploring app had quite a few bugs of its own that need to be ironed out so that Discover Welling's creativity can shine though.

1. I agree app has serious faults, certainly in T&C and inaccessible privacy policy. 2. I also wanted to refer back to the original listing (to try task later), but it now seems inaccessible, all links to the event seem to lead only to the report. Any suggestions ?

Hi Robert, I'll send you the original listing via email, then you can add your feedback into the form that Discover Welling have set up to collect comments.

A Good Job 'Well' Done

Bexley Report written by Kam Mehdani

I volunteered as a marshal at Lesnes Abbey Woods junior parkrun, stationed at 'The Well'.

It was all about encouraging the children as they made their way around the course, giving out lots of high fives (technically high fours, or even high paws...) and cheering them on.

It was a really fun and positive morning, and I enjoyed helping create a supportive atmosphere for all the young runners.

No time to be Himalayan down

Greenwich Report written by Ivar Toft (he/him)

7 Goodgymers turned up to help the Friends of Sutcliffe Park with an absolute Everest of a task: tearing up Himalayan balsam (not to be mistaken for celery). And there was no need to go to base camp to find it. We have all we need here at sea level.

We pulled up the balsam and separated the flowers from the stems to stop it going to seed and spreading even further. It was a real uphill battle, but we were determined to stem the tide before the balsam reached new heights.

No sherpas or oxygen needed, just a red shirt, some gloves, and the Goodgymers usual peak performance. A mountain of balsam tackled, one stem at a time.

Free, two, one...

Bexley Report written by Kam Mehdani

There were two of us volunteering at Avery Hill parkrun this weekend - barcode scanning for me, and Peter in his regular role as timekeeper.

It was a very hot day, but everything went smoothly.

It's good fun and pretty busy, scanning runners’ barcodes and finish tokens after they completed the run, helping to make sure their results were recorded correctly 😎.

And not only do you get a GoodGym credit, you get a parkrun credit too. Two for the price of one (but free!).

The Fast and the Foliage

Bexley Report written by Sarah W

Our fab four joined the Friends of Lesnes Abbey and Woods this morning for their monthly conservation session.

We joined the regular volunteers on the hike up to the Heath, taking turns to push two wheelbarrows full of tools. It’s nearly 1km mostly all uphill, so we certainly earned our keep before the work had even begun!

At the top, Paul explained that the plan was to cut back anything that wasn’t heather, ultimately giving the heather a chance to reclaim the area.

Piles of bracken, brambles, holly, oak saplings and honeysuckle soon made their way into the wheelbarrows, ready for the composting areas. There was plenty of cutting, clearing and hauling to keep everyone busy.

Once our patch was looking considerably more heather-friendly, it was time to collect up the tools and head back down to the Chestnuts Kiosk for some drinks.

Another great morning of teamwork, conservation and GoodGym fun!
