Fast Fashion

Monday 18th September 2023

Written by Lucy Hill

What better way to spend your Monday evening than hanging out with friends? Spending your Monday evening un-hanging out with friends!

That’s what six of West London’s finest GoodGymmers were up to at TRAID Hammersmith. One of our regular tasks, we help with the charity store’s restock by clearing the rails of old stock ready for a fresh haul of clothes to come in. The shop aims to help stop textile wastage associated with fast fashion, which is incredibly bad for the environment.

As the store closed, we were straight away offloading tops and trousers from the rails and getting shirts and skirts off the hangers. Cookie, Divy and Harvey were efficient in accumulating attire and heaping hangers for Kash and Sevan to bungle into boxes. Lucy was on her old favourite the two-shoe - finding pairs of wedges and walking boots and bagging them up.

In possible record time, the rails were bare and the cardboard crates taped up for the restock. Now that’s fast fashion.

On what was a very hot, very sweaty day we pulled together to help out TRAID pack down their sale.

Credit to Harvey for sporting for some of the finer items on offer!

Six appeal

Monday 20th March 2023

It was time for the quarterly TRAID restock, and as usual GoodGym Hammersmith and Fulham were up for the task of helping clear the hangers ready for a load of new outfits to take their place. Six of West London’s finest were here to help put, although not Area Activator Cookie - he was doing a different kind of restock and replenishing after his amazing weekend feat. For those not on the know, Cookie completed the Barcelona marathon the day before. Brilliant work, and a good excuse to miss a double good deed I suppose!

Harvey, Analiese and Divya got to work on the racks straight away, each with their own technique to get the clothes on the floor. Kudos to Divya too for being the most efficient hanger collector that TRAID Hammersmith has ever seen!

At the other end of the shop, Lucy, Emily and Jenni had taken the greatest task. You know it’s a good job when not one, not two but four people say ‘I love this task for this job’! Why it was the matching shoes game. As always, there were black boots galore. As always, there were a couple of shoes gone astray not to be found until the very last minute. As always we got several big blue bags full up of pairs of trainers and pumps and plimsolls.

Back to the shop floor, the shoe gang finished up and went to help get the last of the racks emptied and the clothes piled up into the trolleys. It was almost time, and it seemed that none of us wanted to settle for just one good deed this Monday. The final skirt hit the floor (nicely done Emily) and with a great big thank you from the Hammersmith team, the six of us head off the mile or so up the road for part two of the TRAID double whammy to Shepherds Bush!

TRAID Runner

Six GoodGymmers braved the wild West London weather to make their way to Hammersmith TRAID. The task is an old favourite - helping the charity shop with their restock.

The jobs for the night were:

  • Emptying hangers

  • Putting the piles of clothes from said hangers into boxes to be taken away

  • Bagging up the hangers from said clothes said hangers that were emptied

  • Pairing up shoes, and bagging them up to be taken away.

Always a good task (an indoor task in the rain? Yes please!) our soggy selves got straight to it. Harvey had fun finding seasonal apparel, with a halloween top and a festive tee. Cookie completed his task in a fetching bowler hat (which sadly he couldn’t take home with him). Analiese did a cracking job before she had to leave to go and run in the dark and the rain (crazy lady), and Kash worked efficiently unclipping clothes from hangers and throwing them into the correct bags and boxes.

On the other side of the shop, Big Little Beth and I had scouted out our favourite task… it was Shoe Time, Baby! The age old favourite of the classic game pairs, we searched boxes and shelves to find the matching shoes. Some were more obvious (bright pink boots) and others not so obvious (who knew there were so many similar snakeskin ankle boots in one store).

In 45 minutes we had the shop floor emptied, and five were off to the next task… going outside and running in the rain with intention; this time to get to Shepherd’s Bush TRAID… Analiese, maybe you’re not the only crazy one!

PS. Analiese smashed her Run The Dark 10k in the best way - well done girl!

Hangerin on in there!

Short and sweet at Hammersmith TRAID, powering through the rails to pack up the clothes and hangers ready for next month's charity load.

As always, the hunt was on for the special treats in the depths, including several tutus and a shirt that both Jonathan and Beth posed with.

Always a fun mission, can't wait to be back!

Jack of all TRAIDs

A mission well traid and tested - we were back at Hammersmith TRAID to help with their quarterly restock. H&F local legends Analiese, Bethan, Cookie and Lucy were joined by Ealing’s man-on-a-mission Harvey and Monika from Richmond, plus we welcomed along Layla for her first ever GoodGym task!

The staff got us to work - this time the tactic was to pile all the clothes up on the floor, taking them off hangers and once the rails were emptied, the plan was to stuff the boxes with said clothes.

We showed off some slick moves, with the two handed unclip on the trousers and skirts, to some less slick ones, such as the frantic untangling of a label caught in the hanger. Harvey had hangers, Cookie culled clothes, Monika made do with menswear and Bethan bagged up boots.

Lucy and Layla on the other hand had the task of shoe-pendous job of pairing up shoes. One shoe from each pair was on the shelf, and one in a box. In the worlds hardest and longest version of some sort of memory matching game, we got our brain cells going trying to find the other half for each shoe. Joined by Bethan and Analiese, we learnt a lot of things - about teamwork, perseverance, and communication. But mostly we learnt that there are a bloody lot of black boots that look the same!!

In possibly record time, the shelves and rails were bare. Boxes and bags filled, and some very pleased looking staff members! For some of us, it was home time, but for others we had a TRAID off to attend…
