A terrific 20 said "I ain't afraid of no Dennis" and ran through a blustery evening to help a fab community learning centre.

Two storms in two weeks, yet the tough (and friendly) team at GoodGym Liverpool just keeps running and is even growing! The run up to Kennsington wasn't nearly as cold or as windy as anticipated and the team even made short work of that long slope they're always so fond of. 2.7km later and we arrived at Kennsington Community Learning Centre.

As usual, we were greeted warmly with drinks and biscuits before Centre Manager Suz put us to work. The team was split over various tasks including cleaning suspect stains and grime off all of the computer room chairs (gloves a must!) While a sub team was busy shifting and lifting boxes, files and laptops and moving a heavy filing cabinet.

Shout out to newbies Isobel and Aidan who easily kept pace and really got stuck in at the task. We'd love to run with you both again soon.

A big welcome back and we're so glad you're safe and well to our wonderful Yan who was away for a month and then in self-imposed house quarantine for 2 weeks. Needless to say, she was as happy to be out running as we were to see her!

Making light work of the task, we had time to pose for some "Feel the love" photos before setting off into a head wind back to base. Setting a strong pace to ensure everyone was warm enough, we made great time back into the city and to our Hope Street base.

Fantastic work everyone and well done for braving the wind, cold and dark. You are all heroes!

Next week we're back at the Bombed Out Church so please dress for the weather and bring gloves.

Don't forget there's still time to sign-up for our Wild Welsh Weekender with GoodGym Cardiff. And you can see everything we've got coming up (including a Community Mission this weekend) online here.

It's Raining Pens!

Monday 27th January 2020

Written by Char Binns

On the final Group Run of a very long month, 19 unstoppable GoodGymers ran over 5km to lend a hand at a brilliant community learning centre.

In the last days of the January Challenge it appears that being a smaller branch has finally caught up with; by shear weight of numbers, we've lost our podium position. But as a ratio of good deeds to participants, we are far and away top of the pops (8.75 stats fans!) demonstrating the incredible dedication, heart and soul of the GoodGym Liverpool crew. I applaud each and every one of you, especially those of you who have gone above and beyond any expectations and clocked tens upon tens of good deeds these last 27 days. Incredible!

This week's Group Run took us just under 3km up hill to Kensington Community Learning Centre, a brilliant project we've helped on a number of occasions. We were warmly greeted by Suz with jugs of squash and a tray of biscuits. Then we were soon put to work across various areas of the centre. Most of the graft involved lifting and shifting, be it cardboard boxes or heavy bits of furniture. Other members of the team were proactive in tidying leaflets, washing up and hovering.

Shout out to newbie Sophie W. who easily kept pace and lent some muscle to the task. We'd love to have you run with us again soon.

Big kudos to Jo who hit the big 5-0 at the weekend, joining the black t-shirt crew in something close to record time.

And a massive shout out to our Pauline who looks set to top the national GoodGym heroes board during the January Challenge. As I write she's clocked an incredible 56 good deeds this month but I suspect by Friday the total will be much higher! What an inspiration you are to us all Pauline.

Once everything was sorted at the task, as we posed for our group photos, Suz pulled out a box of KCLC pens and handed them around the group as a small reward for their work.

The run back was mostly downhill (woohoo!) but it started raining almost as soon as we set off (boo!). Great work once again team, especially given how tired many of you are after such a big month of GoodGyming.

Coming up this week there are loads of Community Missions and a celebratory social. See you then :)

Blinded by the Might

Monday 9th September 2019

The rain never pours on GoodGym^ so inspite of a soggy day and a little drizzle as we warmed up, it was a fine evening for our tenacious 12 to run to Kenny.

Making good time up the hill we were soon at Kensington Adult Learning Centre and greeted by Suzanne. As well as being a fab organisation where we always have fun, one of our runners favourite things at KCLC is that they always greet us with donuts and sausage rolls. There were even vegan rolls tonight! As our Trainer it is probably my duty to point out that tonight's run almost certainly didn't amount to the number of calories in these treats but.... my team deserves treats ;)

Suz explained that we had a whole variety of tasks this evening, from fixing chairs to cleaning windows, lifting tables to putting up blinds, and securing wires. With the team scattered all over the building, I swear I worked hardest (for once!) running around the centre trying to keep an eye on all of them!

Highlights of the evening included Effie and Christine's creative blind fixing and Rowan and Pauline's Chuckle-brothers style table shifting adventures.

A big shout out and welcome back to Matthew who has been missed - great to have you back fella.

Huge kudos to Christine who joins the black t-shirt crew, clocking up her 50th good deed tonight - amazing work!

It took longer than expected to complete this random, pick'n mix assortment of tasks (and to eat those donuts) so we didn't have time for a fitness session. However, we added some extra weight to our return run with many of the team carrying baguettes in their back pockets!!!

Lots of fun and fantastic work team - well done.

Next week we're helping at the Unitarian Church for the first time, so let's get a big team there to show them what GoodGym is all about. Sign-up here.

P.S. Good luck to our Effie who is running her first Half Marathon on Sunday - you've got this!

^ Not factually correct.

Splashed It! Now We're Totally Shuttered

Monday 15th July 2019

Written by Char Binns

Our nifty 19 runners enjoyed blue skies and a sticky (almost) 6km run to help out Kensington Community Learning Centre.

On a scorcher of a day, the team made excellent time, even with a slight hill to tackle, on our way to Kensington. We'd visited KCLC twice during the winter but have never seen this fantastic adult learning centre in day light. Making the most of the nice weather, Centre Manager Suzanne put most of the team to work on outdoors tasks. On the busy main road, the centre's shutters were rather dirty and needed some suds and scrubs from our team. While the two alcoves needed a fresh lick of paint.

Back inside the centre Christine and Jake tackled some flaky paint with scrapper, whilst also tackling a light sensor which kept leaving them in the dark! Tim and Chris played engineers/flat pack specialist for the evening by fixing some old chairs.

Shout out to Claire who hit her 10th Good Deed tonight and to Effie freshly back from holiday, who hit 20 Good Deeds. Whoop whoop!

While we do promise that GoodGym is about getting fit while doing good, sometimes the tasks show their appreciation in the form of food. And KCLC has quickly become notorious amongst my team for thanking runners with sausage rolls (and this time, doughnuts too!). So with baked goods still in hand, we began the run home. Somehow the munchies did the trick and we made it back to base at a great pace.

Fantastic work one and all!

Next week we're back at the Greenhouse Project which is a gentle from base. So sign-up and bring your friends too!

¡Underlay Underlay Arriba!

Monday 1st April 2019

Let there be light! A huge team of 23 runners ran just under 6km to help a community learning centre at our first day lit run of the year.

After last week's birthday celebrations, I was expecting this week to be an anticlimax. But a huge group of runners showed up and the team was made up to welcome GoodGym Founder Ivo to his first Liverpool Group Run. Cool beans!

We're used to being heckled as we pound the streets of Liverpool clad in our matching red t-shirts, they're not always, but today's heckle was a nice one. A man rang his bicycle bell at us and proclaimed, "I've seen you on the telly!" That's right, we're kind of a big deal. We were indeed on BBC North West this week and you can still view the shorter clip on Facebook here.

After a hotly paced 3km we arrived at Kensington Community Learning Centre ready for action. The staff kindly greeted us with a tray of sausage rolls and jugs of squash. We soon split into two groups, one team who would help with moving and arranging archive boxes and the other team who would move furniture and help to lay a carpet. We've never laid a carpet before, I'm not sure we ever will again, but it was certainly an experience!

This week's shout-outs go to newbies Basma and Matthew who did a great job keeping pace and got stuck in to a pretty random task! We'd love you to run with us again soon.

Task complete, some of the team grabbed another sausage roll to power up for the run back. Yes readers, they ran while stuffing pork-based pastries in their gobs. I do not condone such practices. As such, we stopped en route to base for a super quick fitness session to get the team thinking about the importance of their arms in running.

Double kudos to John who lead the run back to base AND for the title pun (he's on a roll!) :)

With every week getting better and better, what does next Monday hold? Come and find out, sign-up here.

P.S. Last week someone left a purple plastic bottle at the hotel - is it yours?

P.P.S. Don't forget that there are two Community Missions coming up soon. Find out more and sign-up here.

50 Shades of Magnolia

Thursday 10th January 2019

Written by Matthew

This was another first for GoodGym Liverpool as it was our first Community Mission and eight intrepid runners turned up the Kensington Community Learning Centre and finished off a paint job, which we started on Monday night.

It was nice as people turned up from 5.00pm onwards as and when they could get there. It became clear that there were two different shades of magnolia as we started unwittingly using both shades in the same room. Who would ever have thought that there was more than one shade of magnolia?

After working out which one went in which room it was full steam ahead. We managed to finish off all three rooms, which we were asked to paint and Susie the manager was really happy with what we did. We had just enough paint and so it was another GoodGym good deed done and we are going to be asked back to do more for them in the future.

Thanks go to Char, Emma, John, Eimear, Christine, Sophie, Mat and Pauline.
