Bring me a flyer love

Lewisham Report written by Emma Presley Abbott

It was great to see you all this evening! A very warm welcome to this week's newcomer Marie-Claire (or MC for short) - go and give her a cheer - we hope to see you back again soon! It was lovely to see Olivia and Rosemary again this evening, and we gave a well-deserved round of applause to Oli who is GoodGym Lewisham's latest Task Force member!

Think about it, there must be flyer love // Down in the heart or hidden in the letterbox above

It was an intro of two halves from me this week... very light on news and events, yet very detailed on flyering plans (thanks to Sarah for sharing the reminder about GoodGym's 10th birthday bash this Friday!). We waved off our walking groups who were off to get a head start on their flyering, then we had another crack at the Big Wave to warm up - I think we're getting pretty good at it!

Where's that flyer love I keep thinking of? // Worlds are turning and we're just posting on

Like a Pied Piper in reverse, we set off as a group to slog up Belmont Hill towards Blackheath, dropping off pairs of runners at their allotted roads as we went along, before it was just me and Oli running up and down flights of stairs in Prendergast Road. We covered an incredible area between us, flyering about 1,000 homes which will make a massive difference to attendance at Age Exchange's Christmas Fair. Imagine how long it might have taken just a couple of volunteers to achieve the amount we did in an hour this evening - amazing work!

Things look so bad everywhere // In this whole world, what is (Christmas) fair?

The grand flyering plan (fingers and toes crossed) was for everyone to reconvene outside the Lewisham Tavern at 8.15pm for the short run back to Glass Mill and a cool down. I really appreciate how punctual you all were, it certainly saved me a lot of worrying. And for those of you lucky folk who made it back early, I hope you enjoyed the wall sits!

I could rise above on a flyer love // I will wait for it // I'm not too late for it

For those of you who took a few flyers home with you to spread the word a little further - I've listed this community mission for you to sign up to, for a bonus good deed in exchange for your extra help!

I could light the night up with my headtorch on fire // I could make the sun shine from pure desire

As we spent the evening flyering for a Christmas Fair, here are a few other events to sign up for to get you in the festive spirit, including:

There's that love, bring me flyer love // Bring me a flyer love

Many thanks to Steve Winwood for this week's pun inspiration "Higher Love", released back in 1986. So much mileage in those cracking lyrics, I've had a marvellous time wringing tenuous puns out of them!

It'll be all wipe on the night

Lewisham Report written by Adele Prince

On a grey old evening in Lewisham twenty runners brightened up the streets with their smiles, whilst covering 7km to help at Seniors

A big welcome this week to Adam, who joined us for his first ever GoodGym run and to Dharmesh, who was visiting from all the way over in Redbridge. All our Lewisham Love to you! Thank you and a massive round of applause to Kim and Amber, who took the lead up front again this week for the up and over that takes us to Seniors via Blythe Hill.

Thank you to Tom for this week's title pun - good work - and to Oli for some other beauties throughout this report.

  • News this week was all about coach running and missions. Well done to all of our runners who take time out each week to have a chat with an older person. This makes a very big difference in both people's lives, with new friendships forming all the time (if you want to know more about how coach running works, have a look here). There have been some really amazing missions going on locally in the past week, take a look at this lovely run report from Elizabeth and Nykolette to see what it's all about. If you are already registered for missions, make sure you read the recent email about how they are changing and also check your settings to make sure you're ready for the call-up!

  • Last week we mentioned the Big Half water station, there are still places, so sign up here to put a smile on the faces of the runners on March 10th! If you're running, how is your training going? Last year we had a few group long(er) runs happening at the weekend, anyone fancy sharing a session/route/motivation?

After a very wild game of British Bulldog that seemed to involve rugby tackling, we took to the streets of Ladywell and skirted alongside the River Ravensbourne in Ladywell Fields to head to Seniors. We saw some impressive hill sprinting before a nice downward pull to our task.

Good clean fun

We were met here by Cathy, who quickly showed us through to the cafe for tonight's job: cleaning the tables, chairs, windows and anything else that might need a good wipe down. Gloves were on, cloths in hand and the air was filled with the heady aroma of antibacterial spray. With twenty people getting stuck in at pace, the cafe was soon sparkling and our helpers were on the move, trying to find something else to clean. Before long the massive sack of toys in the corner was tipped up and a frenzied ten minutes were spent giving the cars, balls, Duplo blocks and rattles a thorough scrub.

So clean you could have Senior face in it!

Stepping back, we could appreciate just how long this job might have taken the people who work in this space each day, so hopefully this will free them up to make and share delicious food to the many families and visitors who come along to the cafe in the week.

Putting the park in sparkle

There's no way we can get back to Glass Mill from here without another hill, so one last push before we could cruise back to Lewisham centre. As we stretched, we looked forward to next week's task, which will be a shorter run to Crofton Park, where we will be working on the Sensory Garden again at Beecroft Garden Primary School - wrap up warm and expect a little mud! Have a great week, stay good and see you next week for more of the same loveliness.
