Find out about GoodGym TaskForce

Fifteenovus ran to help out Tenovus; It was a brand new beneficiary this week and we were excited about the tasks that they needed our help with!

At 6pm runners began arriving to the Big Moose Cafe. Some runners used the rainforest themed toilet before the run, and I must disclose to you that the toilet is actually pretty cool! There is even a soundtrack of birds tweeting away in the loo! ... (Unless there real birds in the Big Moose toilet?). The clock hit 6.30pm and we all jumped in the air with excitement... the run was about to begin!

We began with a headcount and this week we didn't lose count! - is that a GoodGym Cardiff first? We also said a HUMONGOUS welcome to Lucy. It was Lucy's very first run with GoodGym Cardiff and she heard about GoodGym through a friend who has never actually been to GoodGym... oh we do hope your friend turns up for a run sometime!

We then got warmed up. The warm up entailed:

  • Walking on tip toes - to stretch the calf muscles
  • Walking on heels - to stretch the tendons in the feet
  • High knees - develops strength and endurance of the hip flexors,
  • Running skips - helps increase stride length
  • Lunges - works out the glutes in your hips and butt, along with the hamstrings and quadriceps in your thighs.

After warm up stretches we then got into pairs and played a game of GoodGym tag, it's like the normal game of tag except I put the word GoodGym in front of it. To play tag everyone got into pairs and allocated themselves either the letter A or B. To begin, A's tried to tag B and if they were caught within a 2 minute timeframe then they would have to do star jumps until the 2 minutes were up. Roles then reversed and B's went after A's.

Let's get running!

With smiles on our faces we began running to the task. We headed down Queen Street where the police were sitting in their van, smiling at us as we ran past. In the middle of town we held a press up on benches... We were demonstrating to the citizens of Cardiff a new way of using benches instead of sitting on one's bottom.... the people of Cardiff were very intrigued to say the least. We then continued, crossing over streets and squatting whilst waiting for traffic lights to change and trying to guess how many seconds were left until they changed. Like the rather adventurous hobbits we are, we even ran though a car park adjacent to the Mercure Hotel and limbo'ed under the car park barrier.

Welcome to Tenvous Charity Shop!

Maggie told us about Tenovus charity and the absolutely incredible work they do. We also got introduced to Carl, the store manager for Tenvous Charity shop on Clifton Street.

Maggie and Carl set us a challenge to get the following tasks completed:

  • Dress the mannequins in the shop window
  • Sort through the donations of clothes
  • Price items
  • Hang items on the correct railings.
  • Take children's clothes down that haven't sold within the past couple of weeks.

Runners got stuck straight into the task. Martin, Hannah, Peter got stuck straight into dressing up the 'male' window. Hannah kept the lads in line and helped oversee fashion decisions. Su, Emma, Aimee, Kiera and Lucy took the role of dressing up the mannequin in the 'female' window. Su was in her element, combining the task with personal shopping. Darren, Adam, Andrew and Dave were all hanging up clothes that had already had been priced. Lucy removed the clothes that hadn't sold from the children's section so that they could be sent to another store to go on sale and hopefully find a new home! Also seizing the opportunity to shop, Peter has reserved himself a pair of running socks! Darren also found time to use a child's fishing rod to 'fish for ducks'.

After a mad panic to get the tasks done with only 5 minutes remaining the task was complete!!! Maggie and Carl thanked us all for our help and invited us back again to help again in the future.

Thank you for your help everyone!

As we ran away from Tenovus we waved goodbye to Maggie and Carl. We were extremely pleased with our efforts and so there was very much a skip in our step.

We then headed back to Big Moose for our warm down and to reflect on the evening's awesome run!
