An Unyewsual Mission

Thursday 26th March

Written by George Ttoouli (he/him)

It was just me for the churchyard clean up this morning, as Marsha was called away on short notice for other duties. With gorgeous sunlight and spring bringing all the flowers into bloom, the churchyard at St Katherine's is completely glorious right now.

I met Andreas and he showed me the equipment, but luckily I had a few things of my own as well. There were two main jobs: cut back the yew trees along the main path so the Epitaphios can be carried there for the Easter procession in a few weeks' time; and litter pick the yard and surrounding pavements. The first job was quick, but the litter pick was a solid hour - the entrance opposite Friary Park was particularly bad.

There's a bit more maintenance to do to clear up leaves and fallen branches and move them to the fence adjacent to the golf course, so I may list a follow up mission in a couple of weeks' time.

Garden of Finchley Delights!

Thursday 26th March

Written by Subham Basu

Finchley welcomed us with brisk but sunny weather. Subham and then Amanda joined the Finchley Energy Gardeners to some weeding and watering of the plants and seeds. The garden is looking great and we received many compliments and thanks from many commuters. As the weather (and soil) is still a bit cold, next meet-up will not be till April 9 and then may become weekly and not fortnightly- will keep you updated!

Tree-ting ourselves to a run

Tuesday 24th March

Written by George Ttoouli (he/him)

Undeterred by the drop in temperature and threat of rain, our trusty group of Goodgymmers gathered for a return to the Tinyforests at Mutton Brook. And, for a change, we had cyclists with us!

Daniel has been carrying on with his pioneering work to engage local asylum seekers in community projects. He organised invitations to two groups, so cycled from Mutton Brook to the Phoenix Cinema and back to help ferry our guests to the site. He introduced the tinyforest, citizen science and the kind of care Goodgym brings to green spaces across Barnet. He'll be working on signing them up properly, so they can engage with more volunteering and connect with the area.

The rest of us ran from the Phoenix - Beattie, Subham, Theodore and myself. We took the quick route as we set off a little late, arriving at about 7:20. The other cyclist, Paul met us on site, helped litter pick the field with us.

Aside from the remains of a barbecue, there wasn't too much litter in the main field - a weird pair of thermal sports leggings, the usual bottles, wrappers, cans. Others found bigger stuff near the roadside, and we took our fair haul of two sacks up to the bus stop bin.

We checked on the tinyforests, skirting the bounds. Earthwatch have put some clearer markers around their attempt at a tinymeadow, which hasn't worked too well. But the original tinyforest is doing so well it seems to have put some runners under the fence, with new trees now as tall as the original! Amazing to see a forest taking shape.

With another week to go before the clocks 'spring forward', it was dark by 7pm, so there wasn't much citizen science we could do after our plog. But with the extra time, that meant a slightly longer, scenic jog back through Northway Gardens and Lyttleton Park. A good bit of cardio!

A little help

Sunday 22nd March

Written by Paul Salman

Another volunteer named Nick from the event, and I worked on filling the holes in the muddy pathway (for about an hour) caused by the rain with woodchip- levelling the path to make it easier to walk. I would have stayed longer but had to leave for another commitment. It was lovely to help out and wonderful to help them maintain the park. I hope this helps.

Acclimbatisation

Saturday 21st March

Written by George Ttoouli (he/him)

This time around, Cherian joined me for her first ever bouldering session - and she took full advantage of my monthly membership's ability to get 5 first timers in for free!

We started at the warm up area with a bit of cardio, light stretching and yoga. Then, after a turn on the warm up block, we got stuck in, touring the several bouldering rooms.

For a break, we walked around the fantastic garden to the outdoor boulders, which will be opening next week. Then we watched some lead climbing in the Wells, before returning to a last stretch of bouldering. A fun session, with some welcoming chats with other climbers.

'll aim to post a session roughly every couple of weeks, as always, let me know if you've preference on a time of day if you'd like to try.

Snow Gum, spring sun, job done

Friday 20th March

Written by Paul Salman

What a day for a Community Mission at Stephens House and Gardens.

Under blue skies and warm spring sunshine, I joined Helen and Noah to plant a Eucalyptus debeuzevillei – the Snow Gum, bought in memory of my mum after the previous tree sadly died.

This one should be a tougher customer apparently hardy and happy in a wide range of conditions — so here’s hoping it thrives. Compared with the redwood we planted a few weeks ago, this was a lighter job, but we still gave it the full treatment: compost down, soil mixed in, tree planted, and a guard grid fitted around it.

With that done, we moved on to some weeding around the pond, making the most of a truly beautiful spring day with flowers and fresh growth everywhere.

Best of all, we finished in traditional style: tea and biscuits in the Bothy garden.

A lovely afternoon, a meaningful planting, and a little bit more life added to a very special place.
