A large and lively group of runners met our lovely task owner Margaret and Michael at the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve for Pond Building Day 1. The early birds amongst us were given an initial tour of this hidden oasis which included huge stones used to prevent drag nets from trawling our shores, houses for bats (which are endangered in our cities) and a medicinal herb garden (not those herbs before you ask). We were then directed to a huge crevice at the back of the reserve where we began levelling off the earth and removing the fibre glass and plastic from a previous less environment-friendly incarnation of the pond. Despite failing light we continued with enthusiasm – our efforts overseen by Sage our friendly neighbourhood fox. Special shout out to our newcomers and to our very own Alex who proudly wore his T-shirt with wings for the first time to the mission.

Hollybush Estate
Hollybush's ‘Rocky’ Gardens and ‘Strawberry Fields’ orchard are now an established nature reserve with 79 growing spaces

The Hollybush and Teesdale Estate Urban Growers project began in April 2009 in Rocky Park – a disused children’s play area. Now enjoyed by the whole community, the area includes seats and communal herb beds for all to use.
