100 Not Out

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

We did it!!! For our 100th Group Run at GoodGym Norwich, I set a target of 50 people attending and we smashed it with our new record of 54!

If it hadn't of rained all day how many would we have had?!

Lots of new faces this evening so a big GoodGym welcome to Richard T, Jenny, Emily B, Lucy, Julia, Pete, Tricia, Paulo, Andy, Jade, Teresa, Shiralee & Caroline.

Emma M was completing her 10th good deed, Mel was completing her 50th good deed and Elizabeth was completing her 100th good deed - very well timed Elizabeth!

Trying to brief over 50 people and getting them in what was a very large circle was a mission in itself, we needed the whole of The Forum.

Hayley volunteered to be photographer, Bill was walk leader and Mel was back runner.

We caught up on race news and I thanked everyone again who volunteered and ran the EPIC Aylsham 5K on Friday evening. Don't forget on Friday 28th June you can volunteer at the EPIC North Walsham 5K or run the EPIC North Walsham 5K. It'll be worth it just for the medal.

The task tonight was to visit the Oxfam Charity Shop of Magdalen Street. Due to the weather, painting was out of the equation but there was still plenty to do. The had a small team stripping the wall ready to be painted when its dry, sweeping the shop floor, stairs & upstairs, sorting through CD & book sections, sorting through clothes donations and general cleaning up of the shop floor.

Due to the sheer amount of people, I made it an active night so those running were put into pairs and there was a 800-metre loop relay taking place so we didn't over crowd the shop so one of the pair had to do the loop then tag the other in when they got back.

There was a bit of a cat walk going on, with a few of us trialling some of the donations... some may be a little concerned with my attire but don't dis it until you try it haha.

After a good 35 minutes (which equates to over 30 hours of volunteering time!) those running headed off and we'd meet Bill and the walkers back at The Forum. The reason for this is that the runners were in for a treat... a little run up Grapes Hill and then the sprint loop in Chapelfield Gardens.

Back at The Forum we had a stretch and Elizabeth had kindly brought some cakes.

After that 18 of us finished the evening off down the pub before the heavens opened on the way home.

Thank you all for making the 1st 100 Group Runs a phenomenal experience, I can't wait for the next 100 :-)

Next week we're visiting Catton Park. If you don't want to run the whole distance you can meet us halfway or at the task.

The Foo(d) Fighters

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

What a difference it makes having sun light throughout the duration of a Group Run. I'm definitely happy to sacrifice an hours sleep for this scenario.

Tonight we visited our friend Keith at The Norwich Food Bank to help him keep on top of all the kind donations they receive.

Emma was taking part in her 1st GoodGym good deed, you picked a great one as your 1st!

Stephen was taking part in his 50th good deed after also doing the Community Mission yesterday, I look forward to seeing the black 50 t-shirt in due course.

Bill and Elizabeth kindly volunteered to be back runners.

We announced that Sam had her baby boy last week. His name is Jasper and from the photos on the Whatsapp group, he looks like a right cutie and we all can't wait to meet him. He'll be a natural runner and is the 1st GoodGym Norwich baby.

The Norwich Food Bank was nice 3km each-way trip, probably my favourite distance for the Group Runs. Keith had a few jobs for us to do and for those who hadn't been before, he explained what they do.

The jobs that were in store included: categorising new food items, date sorting each category, putting them out on the relevant shelves and packing boxes ready to be distributed.

As per usual we had a good production line on the go and got through loads in the alloted 30 minutes.

We then headed back to The Forum (it was still light when we left) but sadly no time for a fitness session this week.

I'm off next week so Katy will be leading y'all as you visit Catton Grove Community Centre.

We don't hanger about, no matter whether the task is Small, Medium or Large, we always XL

Norwich Report written by Steven Hitcham

When we start hitting the winter months, GoodGym becomes more challenging - it's dark, cold, tasks are more difficult to come by, people are less motivated in the normal world... but NOT in the GoodGym Norwich world. We had another incredible 33 runners this evening, which still amazes me the dedication everyone puts in.

It was our 75th Group Run tonight and we're going as strong as ever.

Leanne and Raven were doing their 1st good deeds and Neil his 1st in Norwich after moving up from Bristol where he'd previously been to GoodGym.

Cheska was completing her 10th good deed and Calum his 50th good deed, which also fell on his 27th birthday.

Katy collected in the remaining donations for the Norwich Foodbank, which she is kindly taking in tomorrow.

We visited the Oxfam shop on Magdalen Street again as they needed our help as it's a busy time of year for donations and they rely on volunteers like us.

The main task was to sort through all the Men's clothes donations which required: bags of clothes to be brought through to the shop floor, sorting them into item type, sorting them into size order, the hangers to have the correct size tag added, the clothes labelled up with price and size, clothes over a certain price to be security tagged and then all items to be placed on the shop floor displays. Basically there was a lot to do!

Before a blink of an eye we had a production line going on and everyone was getting stuck in.

5-6 GoodGymers were also cleaning the shop floor, being a hard surface and wet time if year, the floors get dirty very easily.

We managed 50 minutes at the task, which equates to about 27 hours of volunteering time! As we got to the end of the time, the task owner asked us not to bring any more bags of clothes out... the shock on his face when we said we'd got through them all! We don't waste any time for sure.

After the very satisfying task, we headed back to base via a run up Grapes Hill, which everyone got up very quickly this week!

Then it was time for the pub afterwards for a well deserved social.

Next week we're visiting the Norwich Foodbank, there may be 2 tasks next week so what this space.
