Compost Mentis

Monday 6th December 2021

Written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Despite the best laid plans, sometimes it doesn't quite go as expected. Take tonight's last minute change of task as a good example! Unfortunately our run down to the school was canceled last minute, but with a little sprinkle of Christmas we managed to swap it around with next week's mission and the night was saved!

Before we headed down to the Venue, a local community space and food sharing hub, we did a warm up and had our question of the week. Tonight was a two parter - what's the best thing about the lead up to Christmas, and mince pies: yes or no? Our fav things included Christmas movies and cheesy music, and it was a substantial win for the mince pies.

We had a brisk run down to the Venue, where we met Hadas who set us to work with two tasks - one outside and one inside. While the inside team got stuck into clearing the kitchen and packing away food donations, the outside group braved the cold and shifted and spread compost all over the flowerbeds.

Job done it was time for home, and we split the run up with several fitness stations along the way, featuring planks, squats and some toe taps. One hill sprint and a few stretches later and we called it a night. Next week the task is still to be confirmed, but we will be having our Christmas social at the pub after the last run of the year. Hope to see you there for some festive fun!

Much Ado about Rotting

Monday 23rd August 2021

Written by Sophie Humphrey

It was a glorious evening in Wandsworth and we had a great bunch determined to make the most of it!

We were handed some plants to brighten up the outside space at The Venue. Getting those holes dug was certainly a good workout - at times it felt like we needed a pneumatic drill but Goodgymers don't give up that easily and a good workman never blames their tools...

Not stopping there, we attacked the rather ripe compost bin treating the plants to some much needed nutrients. The 'aroma' certainly made some of us appreciate the face masks we had in tow. We smashed through it though and even set up a shiny new bin ready to start all over again.

Great work Goodgym Wandsworth for attacking the start of the week one compost shovel at a time...

That's enough of the business

Last night 10 runners ran 4km to do a deep clean at The Venue community centre near Battersea Park. Battersea Arts Centre is closed on Bank Holidays so our merry band met up ready to run!

After a briefing and warm up off we set to The Venue to meet Hada who set us to work cleaning windows, the bathrooms, clearing up the outside area and breaking down recyclable boxes. Cleaning products were an ingenious mixture of vinegar and washing up liquid - very effective and distinctive smelling!

After about 30 minutes we were finished, everything was sparkling clean, except one bit of bird poo on the outside of a high up window we couldn't reach - damn!

We downed tools, thanked Hada and took a team photo. Then it was off the Battersea Park to play a game of Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Cone which ended up with knockout rounds and a very tense final.

Great work team!

Luckily we weren't booked so we went to the library to (dewey) decimate the weeds there

Monday 2nd July 2018

Written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

With blue skies as far as the eye could see and not one but two tasks ahead of us last night, GoodGym was hot and ready to trot!

We kicked off the night getting cosy in a very warm room at the BAC with a lot to celebrate.

We had some new faces along for their very first group run last night. A massive Wandsworth welcome to Em, Jilly, Lucy - lovely to have you join us!

We were also fresh from our silver medal position at the GoodGym Olympics the previous Saturday - a huge well done to everybody that came along, cheered and raced. Go team Wandsworth!

Don't forget there's an unmissable chance to socialise and hear all about the amazing things everybody has been doing and the monthly social next week. It's an extra special one as it's the first time that Wandsworth will have hosted, so let's get as many of us together to welcome the rest of GG as possible. It will be at 6:30 on the 12th July, venue TBC.

With two tasks ahead of us, we headed outside to do our warm up. And also to discuss our favourite cocktails and mocktails, because that's important too. The winner was far and away espresso martinis, but we also love mojitos, dark and stormys, margaritas and, um, beer.

We started off the run together, with our first stop at Battersea Park Library. We've all seen many of our local libraries being shut or having their opening hours reduced as they suffer from funding pressure, so we reckon it's important to help out these amazing community centres when we can. Our job last night, under the watchful eye of James the Librarian, was to tidy up and weed the area outside the main building. It may have been a library with only one storey (sorry) but there was plenty to be done, so we left half the group there and the rest of us ran over to The Venue, a community centre which hosts loads of local events and community projects, to help out there. The job here was to empty two rooms of stuff that needed chucking out, so we immediately got ourselves into our fav formation - human chain - and got cracking.

Half an hour later the two groups were reunited, but our job was not done. The van that was meant to be there to receive all the bits from the Venue didn't turn up, so we ended up carrying it round to Space Max, a charity which helps families living with overcrowding in their flats.

With such a busy night we didn't have time for a huge fitness session, so we stopped where we were and smashed out a quick EMOM (every minute, on the minute). The idea is we started with 5 reps of three different exercises, increasing it every minute until we were trying to fit in 10 of each within the time slot. Tough! Luckily we had the self-appointed Junior League of GoodGym there to challenge us, cheer us on, count down the timings and generally act as our support crew. Nice work.

There was just a hot and sticky run ahead of us, and one little chin scratcher of a hill, so off we went to finish off our session. Well done everybody, that was an awful lot of good done in a short amount of time. Next week it's our final visit to the Grub Club, a local community café, to finish up the decorating job there ready for their big opening. Sign up here, gang!.

Com(post) lift me up where we belong

Tuesday 26th June 2018

Written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

On a hot and sunny day in Battersea 5 GGers met up to tackle a pile of bags full of compost. We were half way through the job of shifting the heavy old sacks across to a local community centre when a lovely passerby in a spanking clean car stopped to help us out. We lumped the rest of the bags into her (now not so clean vehicle) and instantly our workload was halved! We used the rest of our time to spread the compost into the beds around the centre, enjoying the hot weather and discussing the upcoming Olympics! Well done gang for giving up a sunny lunchtime to smash out a good job for a much-loved community organisation.
