Lethal Weapons for Weeds

Tuesday 2nd April

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

After a glorious Easter weekend, our Goodgym Islington team returned for an unusual Tuesday evening group session, over in Canonbury (sandwiched between Islington and Dalston]. Area Activator Simon met with Dan (running down the canal towpaths in the rain!) and Charlotte (first time attendee- welcome) for a walk/hobble to The Rose Bowl Youth Club on Ramsey Walk.

We were greeted by the lovely Dawn, the top coordinator for this active community hub and after school club, and shown the way to the main playground area. Easter Holidays for local schools have kept the centre busy, so our help is hugely appreciated!

Maggie, Anne and Charlotte were offered a collection of funky looking gardening group tools, and assisted with some super satisfying weeding around a bed of newly planted fruit trees. Charlotte used a special trowel with a serrated edge to dig out some stubborn roots around the unwanted greenery, and Anne used what could only be described as a weed scooper to pop the roots straight out of the ground without having to stretch! Genius!

Maggie was in charge of raking over a bare patch of a former gardening bed, before spreading some new grass seeds across the patch. We might be able to see some growth next time we visit! Dan and Caitlin started the session with some lifting and shifting tasks, and then swept up slippery leaves and debris from the access ramps to the playground (to avoid possible trips and falls).

Together, we pitched in a solid 30 minutes of help in a very wet evening. Congratulations everyone!

We will be visiting Elizabeth House Food Hub next Monday at 6pm to help with local food bank deliveries!

Goodgym Islington are here! What a re-leaf!

Monday 4th December 2023

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On Monday evening, Area Activator Simon caught up with 7 other Goodgym runners from Islington, Hackney and Harringey over at the Emirates Stadium (avoiding a day of sporadic showers). Many of us had started our advent calendars on the run up to Christmas (in Caitlin's case, she had started 5 advent calendars, along with her housemates!), and are glad to be out for another Goodgym group run before the Christmas break (mark down our Xmas post-run social in your calendar! More details below!). Together, we engaged in a quality warm up on the Emirates slopes, before heading up and over Whistler Street and through Highbury Fields.

We arrived at The Rose Bowl Youth Club in ample time and met with Dawn, the resident coordinator for the centre, who was thrilled to see us. The team at the youth club were busy with Xmas parties and football games in the playground, but were very happy to have a Goodgym trip in for the evening!

Our main task was to clear up tonnes of leaves from the surrounding paths and the entrance ways of the centre, using wheelbarrows, rakes and leaf grabbing claws. Between us, we filled an entire building merchant sack full of leaves (after compacting the foliage down by tramping it all under foot), and dropped any excess leaves in the designated composting point. Five of us successfully dragged this very heavy bag back to the green refuse point at the entrance of the centre- a job that would have been very tough for the regular volunteer team. Smashing work, everyone!

Together, we made our way back across the borough (a 5km round trip), and enjoyed the long slopes back to the Emirates Stadium. Top job all!

Clean Sweeps and Medal Monday

Monday 4th September 2023

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

9 Goodgym runners from all different boroughs joined Area Activator Simon on an absolutely glorious Monday evening at the Arsenal Community Hub. It was wonderful to catch up with everyone's Summer time adventures- Congratulations to Charlie for guide running at The Big Half yesterday, and Good Luck to Adam for his upcoming half marathon at Richmond Run Festival next weekend. After dropping off our bags and kit, we performed a warm up routine up the Emirates slopes, before running towards Whistler Street (over Danny Fiszman bridge). We weaved through Highbury Fields, and jogged along the (now open) New River Walk in Canonbury, on route to The Rose Bowl Youth Club.

The Rose Bowl (https://www.rosebowlislington.org.uk/) is an incredible after school club and food bank, that has been a hub in the community for almost 40 years! We met with Dawn and Clive, the absolute legends who run the day-to-day projects at the centre, and got straight to work!

Our first major task for the evening was to clear up the playground area of leaves and foliage, ready for the return of the after school club as the new term starts. Half of our team were able to completely blitz the space with the use of brooms, leaf grabbers, green waste bags and gardening hoes. We also picked away at plenty of moss from the surfaces, to ensure that the youngsters are less likely to slide over when playing football, bulldog and other outdoor games. Benedict, Mia and Louise also assisted with trimming back a mass of over hanging branches around the entrance to the playground slopes, and swept away a scattered pile of gravel back into the outdoor seating area. Sarah and Adam made a final effort in the last few minutes of our session to completely clear the paths leading to the access door to the Rose Bowl Food Hub. Within 45 minutes, we had completely transformed the space- well done everyone!

We packed away our tools, waved Goodbye to Dawn and Clive, and ran back to The Emirates Stadium during golden hour, under incredible purple and orange skies as the sun went down on a successful Monday evening task! As a celebration, many of our team enjoyed some well deserved post-group run pizza and refreshments at The Victoria Tavern as part of our September social. Awesome stuff!

Green Beans and Exercise Machines

Monday 5th June 2023

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On Monday evening, Area Activator Simon, Luke and Dharmesh caught up for a top run across the borough, making our way to The Rose Bowl youth club in Canonbury. All of us had been involved with Hackney Half this year- as a pacer, as a runner and as a water station volunteer! Also, special shout out to Dharmesh for completing the Edinburgh Marathon last weekend- certainly recovered quickly and efficiently.

Upon our arrival, we were joined by Benedict, and then we met with Dawn, the lovely coordinator at the youth club, who put us straight to our first task. Between the four of us, we retrieved a large sack of fresh soil, and carefully filled up a planter (after Benedict prepared a lining in advance) right up to the brim. We were then able to proceed with transferring some lovely new bulbs and sprouting into the fresh bed.

Dharmesh and Benedict created an awesome poly-tunnel using leftover stakes, plastic sheeting and string (super impressive), while Luke and Simon broke down excess packaging and boxes for the busy food bank project.

After a super successful job done, our crew took a slight diversion back to St Paul's Way, to assist with another Goodgym project. We spotted a free outdoor exercise gym located just by the Rose Bowl, and proceeded to demonstrate the usability of the available equipment. This can then be logged as part of the "Move Map", an interactive guide for free gym equipment across the UK, set up by "Move the Masses".

"Hey, why are you guys jogging?" - small cycling boy in Hackney

Monday 15th May 2023

Written by Simon Fitzmaurice

We were treated to a glorious evening of summer time sunshine tonight for our group run over to The Rose Bowl Youth Club in Canonbury. A top crew of 6 Goodgym runners and walkers on hand (including first time Islington runner Danya- welcome!) to help Dawn and the team at the community youth project.

Starting our run with some warm up drills up towards the Emirates Stadium, we crossed Highbury Fields via the Whistler Street slope, and down towards the Canonbury Overground Station, before arriving at our destination. The lovely folks at The Rose Bowl Youth Club had been rushed off their feet recently, after finishing excursion holidays with the local youth, photo shoots with the council and a cycling maintenance course for the young ones! So they were super thrilled to see us!

Our objective for this evening was to clear a large patch of weeds and vegetation away from a beautiful wild flower patch. Although we have had an explosion of growth from these beautiful plants, our concern is that the super-growers will choke out the newly planted cherry trees within the space, so some careful upkeep would be required. Charlotte and Benedict also assisted with a spree of litter picking around the play area and entrances to the Rose Bowl before the end of the evening.

All of us completed our evening of garden tasking and rubbish collecting with a collective push to break down a load of cardboard boxes for recycling tomorrow. A great way to complete a solid session of help, before running back to the Arsenal Community Hub.

Great job folks- see you for our group run to Thornhill Square Gardens next week!

Egg-stra, egg-stra weed all about it

Monday 3rd April 2023

Written by Patrick Luong

This Monday 3 April, eight weren't misbehavin' as they cleared lots of bamboo and weeds at the Rose Bowl Youth Centre in advance of a busy Easter schedule of activities. Task owner Dawn greatly valued the hard work and said the clear path was like the red carpet treatment before we finished with an Easter egg hunt

Tonight we really saw the value of flexibility in volunteering with GoodGym and how much more you can achieve as a group. I had three other sign-ups meeting at the task so thought I'd have a solo run while I could think of a pun. And just how many eggs per person is too many!

But I was so chuffed to see new and experienced hands at the Arsenal Hub. We welcomed Jun to his first great deed who was already chatting to seasoned GoodGymer and tinnie-blower John who was surprisingly fresh after a Brighton 10km. We did a warm up , talked about the ways of doing good and went off to the super bowl as a compact trio.

Shifts bamboo and leaves

Tonight we were back to the Super Bowl, or Rose Bowl Youth Centre, and we had another two GoodGymers (Louise and Audrey who joined Anne, Benedict and Katie to double our might to eight.

Dawn and the team were so very busy getting the centre ready for a packed Easter schedule of activities, food and support for the local community. It seemed that GoodGym's help was appreciated more than ever.

Tonight we were mostly digging up bamboo and weeds (thank goodness Weed Appreciation Day was nearly a week ago! Phew 😅). Ben, Anne and Audrey said good night to the evening primrose weeds. John and Katie also took on the stubborn bamboo and deep-rooted bamboo problem and shifted planters in the process. Louise cleared and swept the paths, while newcomer Jun did a bit of everything chatting to everyone, while getting to know more about London geography!

Thanks for the egg-cellent work till dusk from Dawn

Dawn really appreciated the great work and likened Louise's hard swept path to a red carpet. So much love. And it was so inspiring to hear how many and varied activities are coordinated, to include learning more about where food comes from and crafting materials.

We then had a group photo before I sent everyone off for an Easter egg hunt 🍫🥚🧺

I apologised they were not suitable for vegans but know non-Vegan friends would appreciate the gifts. Dawn got involved and found the last one and we cheered Ben for finding the most with FOUR chocolate eggs! Happy Easter to all.
