Refugee Action Kingston

We are a local and independent charity, providing vital services for refugees and people seeking asylum
Refugee Action Kingston has been supporting refugees and asylum-seekers in and around Kingston-Upon-Thames for over 30 years. Against an increasingly challenging backdrop both in the UK and abroad, we have sought to be a positive source of support for our clients. One that focusses on matching the ambitions of our clients and their needs. We provide our clients with a wide range of support, from initial emergency assistance to long-term integration. Research confirms what we see every day: that language, employment, and housing have the biggest impact on refugee integration.

29 GoodGymers have supported Refugee Action Kingston with 10 tasks.

Re-Racking, Stacking & Unpacking @ RAK(ing)

Tuesday 29th April

Written by Dave White

Tonight's task was to help one of Kingston's amazing local charities, RAK (Refugee Action Kingston) . RAK help out refugees in the area to integrate, live fulfilling, independent lives and become recognised and active participants in their local communities. Part of this involves the provision of clothing and other essential items. Our task tonight was to sort through a load of these donations and help organise their storage system.

As with any catch-all store, there are a few departments at RAK: Mens, Womens, Kids and Toiletries. All of these areas needed reorganising and tidying up. A recent fire inspection suggesting that all cardboard should be disposed of where possible so any items in boxes needed repacking. There were also a whole load of unsorted donations that needed to be split into department or discarded, if the quality was below-par. We separated into groups and did what GoodGym does best - use many hands to make light work. Always amazing how much can be done in a short period of time!

Welcome to Kitty and John on your first tasks! Excellent to meet you and hope to see you next time :)

Blinded by the light

Friday 11th April

Written by Rachel White

The glorious sunshine has unfortunately been causing issues for Refugee Action Kingston as the sun streams into the office and is too bright. Dave and Rachel went over and put up a blind so they can now get some shade and sit comfortably at the desk.

Time for new blinds

Friday 28th March

Written by Rachel White

Dave and Rachel got their goodgym t-shirts on and went to help Refugee Action Kingston by putting up a blind in their office but when they got there there was no-one there!

We left a message on their answerphone to get in touch to rearrange and went back home with the drill.

🍱🍣🎨Sushi good paint job🎨🍣🍱

Saturday 3rd June 2023

Written by Claire Dunne

Today we went back to Refugee Action Kingston to finish what we started On Tuesday evening painting the office and reception area.

When we arrived the painting had been in full flow since Tuesday and the walls were starting to loose their yellow tinge.

Rachel, Marie-Noelle and Claire all gave some of the walls a second coat of paint and Rachel then moved on to cleaning the nasty sticky sellotape marks off the windows. Meanwhile Marie-Noelle and Claire cleaned the door frame and radiator so they were all shiny and sparkling.

It was then time for a quick hoover and tidy up so the office could be put back together for Monday morning. It now looks much brighter space to welcome visitors and work in.

We were then treated to sushi as an early lunch which was enjoyed by all.

I hope the team enjoy their new look offices on Monday morning.

Hello, hello, how are you?!

Wednesday 19th October 2022

Written by Rachel White

Rachel and Liz went on a mission to meet the guests at the Refugee Action Kingston health day. We set up our stall using a large GoodGym flag and decorated it with all the GoodGym merch we could find. Turns out that between us we have quite the selection of t-shirts!

Over the course of 2h30 we met lots of people and spread the word of all the amazing things we are doing in Kingston and Richmond, promoted the health benefits of running/walking, and encouraged people to come and try out our groups.

In between all the promotion, we chatted about potential collaborations and generally put the world to rights.

Such a lovely way to spend a lunchtime. We’ll come and visit you in Richmond soon, Liz!
