Glasses half full

Thursday 8th December 2022

Written by Jonny Carter

On a freeeeeeezing night, 4 hardy soles got out and did some good!

We headed to Oasis Foundry School to meet new task owner Matt. Our job was a litter pick around the road then the wildlife area. We were joined at the task by Sofeen. We even found a pair of glasses with half the glass missing, hence the pun! Most exciting of all we were greeted by the Larmas as we entered the wildlife area :)

We managed to fill 4 bags of rubbish before saying goodbye to Sofeen, Matt and the Larmas and heading back to 1000 Trades. We were certainly very keen to get running as the temperature plummeted further. Once done we had completed a nice 5 and a bit k :)

14 Bags full!

Thursday 15th September 2022

Written by Jonny Carter

Tonight it was great to welcome Lo Chi, to the group, it's great to have you on board.

Tonight we were back at Oasis Foundry School for the first time in a while. We met Megan, then the session was clearing all the leaves from the school playground. We certainly did just that, filling 14 bags in total!

Once done we dropped them off in the Wildlife area ready to be composted, before heading back along the canal on a lovely September evening, through Brindley Place and back to 1000 Trades, covering 7k in total.

The gloves are on!

Wednesday 25th May 2022

Written by Jonny Carter

Tonight's task was at Oasis Foundry, well Boulton School to be exact. We set off with Miriam leading the way, on arrival we were met by task owner Megan and our walker, Amy who was already hard at work.

The task was to get some gloves on (hence the pun!) and plenty of sanding wooden pallets, plus a bit of gardening and attaching felt to the pallets, before filling them with compost, so plenty to do! We spent a good half hour at the task, before heading off.

On the way back Miriam and Eve led us back along the canal this time, we had a bit of a run in with some 'hissy' geese, before getting back onto the road side and arriving back at 1000 Trades. That was a nice 7k done in total :)

What a load of rubbish

Tuesday 10th May 2022

Written by Jonny Carter

On a warm spring evening, tonight's task was at Oasis Foundry School.

Liam led the way to the school, on arrival we were greeted by Sofeen and task owner Megan, who was armed with litter pickers and hooped bags.

The task was to pick the litter outside the school and along the street as unfortunately the street has been used by fly tippers, which I think you would agree is a load of rubbish!

We filled copious bags and one resident was so pleased they gave us some lucozade and caramel bars!

Once our good deed was done Balal led us back to 1000 Trades along the canal and that was the best part of 6k done in total

New Year new run!

Tuesday 11th January 2022

Written by Jonny Carter

It was great to welcome back a few old faces back to GG Brum tonight and Mark came along for the first time.

Unfortunately our task was cancelled, however no problem Liam took us on a brand new running route! It was about 5k, taking us back to St Paul's Square were the group took part in a fitness session. The sess included, press ups, squat jumps, high knees and reverse dips, everyone working well. Mark showing some great newbie form and George and Morwenna pushed each other along.

Once done we headed back to 1000 Trades, so despite no task, we ran about 5.4k and did a circuit for good measure! Great work everyone!

Pulling our weight

Tuesday 9th November 2021

Written by Morwenna Kearns

Last night eight GoodGym-ers headed to the FaB Foundry Pantry at Oasis Foundry Academy, including six who set off on foot from the Jewellery Quarter.

This is the sister hub to the pantry we painted a couple of weeks ago so it was great to see the rest of this community initiative, which focuses on reducing food waste by selling surplus produce at affordable prices with the funds going back into the community.

A bit of recycling needed to go out for collection, but the big task was shifting some gym equipment upstairs. Hub Leader Megan explained that the kit, which included a treadmill and a weights machine, were donated to the school a while ago but weren't regularly used, so were moved to a new home in the pantry building. Unfortunately, getting it into a dedicated space up a set of stairs was a tricky job so the kit had stayed on the ground floor for about a year.

It's exactly the kind of task we love at GoodGym: strength training combined with puzzle solving. The stairs were narrow with plenty of corners, so we had to go in search of tools to take the weights machine into pieces then shift it all using muscles and teamwork. In 45 minutes Megan and the team had more room downstairs, the community had a private, affordable gym, and we'd got some exercise.

We're hoping to be back at FaB Foundry Pantry soon for more tricky tasks!
