Bending and straightening when weeding

Saturday 20th April

Written by Sander Heinsalu

We dug up some invasive plants from the flower beds, took these to the compost pile, then trimmed a hedge that overhung a fence and was bending it down. The fence straightened up again. The weeding involved bending and straightening oneself as usual, but the body was not the only thing doing that. The digging tended to bend the tines of the pitchfork, but these could be bent back by putting the pitchfork on the asphalt and stepping on it. It was a nice day for gardening. My first time in Luxmore Gardens, which are quite beautiful and peaceful.

Give a weed an inch and it’ll take a yard

Monday 7th August 2023

Written by Kim Parker

Weeds have not been given an inch this year at Luxmore Gardens as we've been there regularly tackling those pesky weeds and ensuring the plants are thriving!

This week we tackled a different flower bed which needed the alkinet removing from around plants and clearing any other weeds and grass that was taking over.

A smaller group than usual but we still tackled a lot of weeds! Well done team!!

Bourne Amenity

This week we had a running group and a walking group, Luxmore Gardens is the perfect distance to make this work. At Glass Mill we welcomed first time GG-er Lisa - hope you enjoyed doing good in Lewisham. And then me and Clare headed up to Luxmore whilst Oli was left in charge of the warm up - thank you!

I'm going to keep it short and sweet/let the pictures do the talking since this is our 4th visit in 2 months. We've had a huge impact on keeping the beautiful space looking less overgrown and giving space to the plants to thrive.

Next week we have a longer run of around 7-8km in total to move the paving slabs to PNK Garden. Don't forget gardening gloves for this one!

Brace for the Hoes

Monday 10th July 2023

A smaller group this week with some of our regulars being at Love Trails Festival so it wasn't long before we were all gathered at Glass Mill and ready to get going.

I left everyone to the new warm up that Oli had planned for the evening and set off on a walk up the hill to Luxmore Gardens. It wasn't that long before the group came running past me, luckily it was a shorter run and we only ended up arriving a couple of minutes apart.

Another week, another flower bed to de-weed at Luxmore Gardens. We are gradually moving down the flower beds and this time we were situated near the water fountain where bindweed was taking over!

In a change of tradition we took the group photo first as I wasn't sure I'd make it to then end. Spoiler alert: I didn't make it to the end.

Anything could have happened after I headed off to get the bus but for purposes of this run report, everyone continued weeding and the beds looked beautiful!!

Lux is more

Monday 26th June 2023

Written by Kim Parker

Another one of our summer visits to Luxmore Gardens to tackle the weeds and cut back any overhanging or overgrown trees and plants. A visit to Luxmore Gardens is always a good lesson in what is and what isn't a weed and then we forget it all by the next visit and worry that we're digging up the plants! Anyway, no ornamental grass dug up this time.

This week I'm leaving the photos to show what we got up to!

Next week, we return to Senior's to help in the garden. It's a longer run up and over the hills (hills are good for us!!) of around 7km in total so if you're not feeling up to that then you could meet us at the task!

Knives out, forks in

Monday 5th June 2023

Written by Kim Parker

A super bunch of 15 GG-ers gathered at Glass Mill ready to run and/or cycle up the hill to Luxmore Gardens.

We moved on to a new flower bed on this visit and at first glance it didn't look like there were that many weeds in the flower bed but on closer inspection and once we got started, we found there was lots of us to get stuck into!

I could already see the plants breathing a sigh of relief that they had space to breathe and grow.

The clear highlight of the evening was the GIANT alkanet root that Tam dug up!! There are multiple photos with members of the group for scale and to highlight just how long it was!

We even had enough time to tackle the next flower bed a long - great work team!

We always make a huge difference at Luxmore Gardens as there is a lot of space for a small group to keep on top of.
