Where there's a film, there's wahey! 🎉

The second of GoodGym Camden's five community missions today saw three GoodGymmers man a stall for two hours to let everyone know how we can help out in their local community (and how they can help us help out in their local community!).

After a reasonable start (in which Toyin, Sally and Elizabeth pulled faces to seek out GoodGymmers), things really started to pick up after Beth arrived early to her 2pm shift: She brought with her some gelato, cones and a scooper to dish it all up! Delicious!! Not only that, but she convinced an ice cream seller to look after the remaining gelato for us to enjoy on shift three of the stall 😍👍

Probably more importantly, Beth also chased after a cameraperson to come and record us, explaining what GoodGym was. Great stuff, especially considering she wasn't even on the clock!

Also there's a shout out to Sally for going around the other community stalls with our leaflets and chatting to various stall holders :) Great work and spreading what we do!

In a bit of an overlap between stall times, Elizabeth headed off around half an hour late, leaving Sally, Toyin and Beth behind after Toyin signed up on the day for another shift: That's how much fun this stall was 😎👍

Stand by your manned stall

Saturday 13th July 2019

Written by Elizabeth

GoodGym Camden's penultimate of 5 community missions today saw Beth, Elizabeth and Fay man a stall promoting GoodGym for the final two hours of the festival.

Although we expected some stalls to pack up early, it was surprising to see a lot of the charity stands leaving their stall for the final two hours of the festival, particularly with plenty of people around and the party in full swing.

That just gave us extra room to make our banner visible and to engage with people passing by. Notable patrons from this last shift included a known volunteer with another running-based charity group and Beth Hoskin's coach!

We also recovered the leftover gelato from the first shift, fuelling ourselves ready for the final community mission of the day: packdown 😎💪

We ate, drank and played games

Sunday 1st July 2018

Written by Steven Hitcham

This week marked Norwich GoodyGym’s 1st birthday.

Soon it will be walking, talking and heading off in to the big bad world, forgetting those who raised it, loved it and cared for it. Still we thought we would mark this momentous occasion with a little BBQ. We headed to our Grand Poobah’s home/mini estate and got down to business. Mountains of salad was revealed, from pasta and potato to rice and barley (we are right fancy and varied here in Norfolk). Tonnes of meat and vegan substitute burgers complimented the flowing drinks and witty repartee. With the sun out, the swing ball set up and Steve on the barby, we were all set for the best group task we’ve done to date.

After eating our weight in food we relaxed on blankets, under a shady oak to listen to Steve relive some of our favourite GoodGym moments, puns and runs. After a jog down memory lane Steve awarded Jasmine with “most improved runner”, whilst Bill and Katy won “GoodGym-er of the year”. Well-deserved all around. Unbeknownst to Steve, the team had went behind his back to make him a special card and thank you bag in recognition of all the effort he has put in to help create our wonderful running family.

Leaving the sappy stuff behind, it was time to get stuck into some games. A hybrid game of relay sack croquet was under way, with rules too convoluted for any to follow. However, if you were hungering for drama you need have looked no further than the mӧllky field. No idea what mӧllky is?! Well neither did we. Still it created a level of excitement and drama on par to the most tense world cup final. So if you still haven’t googled mӧllky, you probably should.

With the afternoon finally winding down we unveiled the deserts! A lovely summer pudding was provided by Bill and Katy, and two cakes were baked by Calum. To celebrate Sarah and Tom moving to New Zealand next week (with some travelling first mind you) one of the cakes featured a kiwi. Some say the cake contained actual kiwi bird, but these claims have remained unsubstantiated. Still there were mutters that the GoodGym birthday cake was too delicious for words, and birthday orders have already been placed.

With GoodGym’s birthday well and truly celebrated, the team finished their epic game of mӧllky (because a good mӧllky game takes hours) and retired, weary but happy, to their homes. Resting so they are prepared for tomorrows run.

P.s. – With Tom and Sarah leaving our running family I wanted to leave you with this:

Somehow you'll escape all that waiting and staying. You'll find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing. With banner flip-flapping, once more you'll ride high! Ready for anything under the sky. Ready because you're those kind of a guys. And will they succeed? Yes! They will indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed!)

Calum wrote all of the above by the way.

Plogging in Pogmoor

Tuesday 20th March 2018

Written by Tom Mutton

Rocking Regulars DANGEROUS DAN, LOVELY LOU & JUMPING JOSH rocked up at the newly furnished Shaw Lane Sports Centre and welcomed new trainer Tom to BRILLIANT BARNSLEY.

We started with a chat re all things @ggbarnsley and then gave out gloves and bags ready for a plogging adventure.

Heading left out of our base and toward Pennie Pie Park we took a brief pause at the playground equipment for some squeeky sets before crossing the road to plog in POGMOOR!

On the way into town we couldn't pass the legendary FITZWILLIAM ST without getting a group photo and some hill reps in!

Once at the top we headed to the Town hall for some Fartlek step reps and the dropped down to a local green space for another quick fire street furniture circuit inc:

  • press ups
  • lunges
  • stair sprints
  • tri dips
  • step ups
  • calf raises

From here we headed home for some stretching and stat sharing.

Until next time, happy running!

I get Sooo Emulsional Baby ... Every Time I Roller You

Tuesday 6th March 2018

Written by Bath runner

A disappointing weekend with running events being cancelled for everyone due to the snow, however this didn’t stop a hearty group of 15 fabulous runners from coming along this evening to take on the mighty 7 k run up the notorious Holloway hill to St Phillips and St James’s Church to give the institutional room a fresh lick of paint.

Welcome along to Ella joining us for her first Goodgym run…Whoop!! and fab to have ALLIE and MARCUS back for more.

CONGARTULATIONS to CHRISTOPHER on a 2:1 in his Exam results

We have a few landmark Good Deed achievers looming ever closer, which will mean some more new T-Shirts amongst the group…. Great to see the commitment we have in Bath.

Headcount with a memorable moment incorporated ... This never runs smoothly but always raises a smile or five and some really cheesy moments going down tonight.

Two groups heading up

The run out this evening was taken in the form of two groups to ensure a smooth transition up to Odd Down to our task destination, the big question being do we take Bloomfield road or the wellsway?

Andy our host was full of energy and enthusiasm on our arrival. Rollers at the ready to get all emulsional for this worthy task for a great community space for the residents of Bath and with many isolated older people attending weekly groups here, it`s all the more rewarding to be able to help out. ANDY did a sterling job guiding one or two on the art of using a roller and generally lovely to hear everyone 'whistling while they worked' if you get my drift.

licked it in 35 mins

A quick clean up before rushing off . Joe proved to be great support for the group photo., with some asdistance.

Heigh ho,Heigh ho, it`s back down the hill we go! to the leisure centre for a much needed stretch out with PASCALE at the helm for this one, she's a super star that one.

Thank you to EMMA, PASCALE and myself or back marking/ leading the individual groups and to CHRISTOPHER for tonight`s pun for the run report.

Plogging in the Stainless City

Monday 5th March 2018

Written by Tom Mutton

The snow had thawed in the Steel City and the @GGSheff crew were raring to get out onto the streets again and make Sheffield Stainless as part of the Great British Spring Clean #GBSpringClean and ahead of the Cities Outdoor Weekender when visitors will descend on Sheffield for all types of outdoor goodness!

We had some new runners this week. Woop, Hola and Cheers for;

After saying hello and divying out plastic bags and gloves ready for our PLOG we headed down the street and up over the bridge to the 'other side of the tracks' to begin our Spring Clean of the city.

We focused on a number of specific areas, did quick sweeps, emptied our bags and moved onto the next area. We literally refused to sack it off, we bin wheely good gymers....

In between areas we made the most of the local landscape and street furniture to get some great fitness in including:

  • Quick feet step ups
  • Hill Sprints
  • Box Jumps on the Amphitheatre
  • Lunges up the Steel City Steps
  • Suicides

Chris wins the prize for the biggest haul as can be seen in the photos.

Top work everyone!

Happy running :)
