Canal & River Trust Ealing

Canals and rivers are a world away from every day. They’re free, open spaces we can all enjoy - and it’s our job at the Trust to keep them that way.

78 GoodGymers have supported Canal & River Trust Ealing with 21 tasks.

Prickly project

Tuesday 23rd August 2022

Written by Lesley B Mukenge

Tuesday night nine of us took on the Elthorne Park burdock and won. We got to Elthorne Park , gathered our tools and started clearing up the burdock plant. We cleared and filled two bags. We were joined by Salini who completed her first mission, yay! We may need to back in a couple of weeks to do some watering, so keep an eye out. Next week, we’ll be heading to Transition Community Garden to trim the hedges and brambles, so sign up!

It was Sofa away!

Tuesday 11th May 2021

Written by Ealing runner

Today 8 of us took on the second group task of the evening to litter pick supporting the William Hobbayne Centre that have patches of land all over Ealing and Hanwell. This time we had a mission; find the sofa that had been fly-tipped in Half Acre Wood. Some of the sign ups swapped to go to the grounds clearing task as we had more space this week to socially distance.

Mission accepted

Sevan, Adam, Bryon, Caroline, Milly and Liv boldly followed June from William Hobbayne off into the wilderness with the help of Harvey's trusty trolley.

We ticked off a fair few of the litter pick bingo items, finding little stashes of rubbish hidden in corners of woods which is always frustrating.

Sofa hide and seek

The Sofa itself was split into five pieces and also "hidden" in the woods- whyyy do people do this!?

We litter picked the woods and loaded up the trolley and Adam, Bryon and Milly guided the trolley back to the Hobbayne centre to get rid of the rubbish. crashed into a few bushes as that trolley has a mind of its own, especially with Adam in charge.

Arrived unscathed, got rid of the goods and we were off for the evening.

Thanks to everyone that joined us!

Give a litter bit of your time.

Tuesday 20th April 2021

Written by Ealing runner

Last night 15 of us got together to clean up Ealing Common after work.

We split into three different covid safe teams and set off; destination RUBBISH.

There has been talk recently of Litter Picking Bingo in some circles, regular litter pickers will know that there are repeat items you find (ahem, MASKS...) McDonald’s wrappers and more. Plus the comical bottle of Corona.

This week our group found a pair of ray bans; wonder what the story behind them was!?

Five bags of rubbish later and it was time for the exercise session. Well done to everyone that took part and those that made the exercise such a HIIT.

To those that snuck off to the pub early, whoever that was!? You tempted fate and low and behold “Milly that makes a mess” booked the third pub table a day early. Apologies to those that missed us, hope you enjoyed a warm evening indoors (we were v v cold.)

Join us next week for more litter picking and exercise as it hopefully warms up.

Take care and stay safe.

Tinchy Slider

Tuesday 27th October 2020

Written by Liv Parker-Scott

After a day of heavy rain the idea of heading out for a run and a litter pick could have sounded a bit unappealing, however GoodGym runners are tough cookies!

We may have been a small group but we made a mighty dent in the litter on the canal tonight, filling two full bags with mostly cans and bottles. There were a few other random finds along the way too, including a door mat and a slider shoe.

The final stretch was a really sad (yet satisfying to clear) stretch of ivy that had many, many cans and bottles dumped in it. Hopefully now it's clear it will become less of a dumping ground.

Excellent work everyone!

Litter-ally the best

Saturday 25th July 2020

Written by Alex Schatz

A dedicated crew of GoodGymers tackled a stretch of canal near Alperton which was in a shocking state in terms of discarded rubbish. Big shout out to Jenni who cycled over with the litter picking equipment despite feeling worse for wear, and Bryon who came out even though his baby is due any minute now. We didn't have to go far to fill our bags with discarded bottles, cans and other rubbish. However, the area looked great by the time we finished. Well done team!

Slim pickings

Thursday 16th July 2020

Written by Jenni H

Michelle had spotted a litter hotspot on her strolls; the area around the viaduct in Bunny Park. Armed with pickers and bags, 6 of us set off to clean up!

Our junior mascot (and his Daddy) came to support us en route, dressed in his red top too 😍

We were pleasantly suprised by the scarcity of litter, but determined to get our fill, we still managed to fit plenty in our bags after wandering around the park a bit more.

Milly was not impressed by one find in particular... 'who throws a dirty nappy in a bush?!'. A very good question, and we hope the culprit wont be doing it again, especially as there are plenty of bins in the park!

A lovely sunny evening, and bunny park cleaned up. Our work here is done... for today!
