Getting stuff done in the mud and the sun

Saturday 6th January

Written by Chris Bennett

Loads of goodgymers got loads done at Bramble Farm, and brought the sunshine with them. We chopped, lopped, snipped, slipped, slid, bopped, bashed and more. It was great to get so much done piglet proofing one pig pen, and taking down the fence and clearing brambles in the other pen. Epic! Great to see a load of Goodgym Bristol legends as well as some people for their first time.

What happened? When? Where? Meanwhile, in Singapore

Tuesday 8th August 2023

Written by Melanie Young (she/her)

I've no idea, but today had the experience, again, of being at a parkrun far away (even further than Denmark/Sweden) and seeing a fellow GG t-shirt heading our way - this time Nick, who's moved to Singapore from Tower Hamlets and was one of the active GGers during the lockdowns.

GG and parkrun - such fab communities.

No, I’m Spade-icus

Tuesday 23rd May 2023

Written by Melanie Young (she/her)

Dig over a patch of ground, they said. A few dry days after some wet ones should have been ideal, shouldn't it?

An uphill run read to an uphill challenge - the weed suppressing cardboard had let a fair few weeds in but the ground felt like sold clay and it was a full-on workout to try to get forks into the ground and then break the weeds out of the clumps of claggy soil, possibly spreading more weed seed than we were removing...

Alice experienced some stone-throwing kids on her way to GoodGym but managed a full-on mindful recovery by going to see the Bramble Farm kids - these ones of the goat variety.

We were small in number but mighty in effect and filled wheelbarrow after after wheelbarrow (technically only two wheelbarrows) full of weeds except the bindweed which we all know goes in the yellow bindweed bucket. Obviously.

There was some drama over passing a spade between GoodGymmers which established a Spade etiquette which became a Spade-iquette which elicited a chorus of "No, I'm Spade-icus". In case that wasn't clear.

Other members of the cooperative were really appreciative and we'd (weed) had a great time as we set off back up the hill with the gorgeous sunshine on our backs.

Another lovely evening with good friends.

You wood, wood you?

Tuesday 6th September 2022

Written by Melanie Young (she/her)

Somehow we avoided the rain showers that had been torrential at times of the day and set off up the (Vaguely) Northern Slopes' gentle incline.

Bramble Farm is run by a collective carrying on a project originally set up with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall back in 2008 and celebrated 10 years in this Knowle-ledge article. We were helping tidy up for the upcoming Get Growing Garden Trail on Saturday 17th September, when Bramble Farm will be on show along with other projects we support, including Malago's Berry Maze.

Our main mission was to get Abby a lovely profile photo as she's not uploaded one yet... It was hard to keep up with her from the wood shifting to the goat feeding to the leafleting, but we can give her a few options.

Meanwhile, it was bath time for another part of the group, moving a very heavy bath a bit too far and having to move it back a bit. And be told that an 80-year-old had apparently gotten it down the stairs in his home all alone. He must be Superman.

There was much excitement about feeding the pigs and goats, possibly less excitement about cleaning out the Clubhouse and definitely less so for leafletting the local roads with information and the Get Growing Garden Trail whilst on the way back to Queens Square en route to Hoba Kebab for this month's GoodGym Eats.

One Glove (for the city streets)

Tuesday 14th June 2022

Written by Melanie Young (she/her)

It was Plan B for the GoodGymmers old and new in Queen Square on a balmy (barmy?) Tuesday night as the runners set off for a run up a big hill with the promise of farm animals and drinking water at the top.

Chris was ready to welcome the team with the sprinkler already on the go for anyone needing a cool down - de-bindweeding the fruit cage (eating as many ripe berries as possible), de-grassing the maize field and turning the compost heap until there was actual compost accessible - all warm work on a hot evening so breaks to see the goats, chickens and pigs were encouraged.

It was great to welcome some new faces and recognise returners from pre-pandemic days. We (over) filled three wheelbarrows with naughty weeds which were moved to the bonfire before tidying away the tools and enjoying the run back down the big grassy hill.

We finished off with stretching and congratulating Richard on his 50th parkrun before heading for well-earned drinks on the back terrace at Workout - perfect!
