We all need to find our own path in life...

Sunday 21st May 2023

Written by Rachel Henry

And we literally did find our path, as tasked....except, hold on...we were all finding the same one. Uh oh..what have we done?! Instead of going home did Liv go and watch Marta's film at the Picturehouse? Did Vic go home and put my socks on? Did Marta forget she was ever a scientist and start sitting on people's feet and demanding that everyone stop what they're doing and show her complete and utter adoration at every hour of the day and night? (Tom was helping out too, remember). And what happened to Tom? Is he sitting in an office somewhere in a lab coat pretending to know what the heck is going on?

Maybe we should have a debrief because this has all planted many seeds of doubt in my mind. I had a lot more energy than normal this morning and I think that alone something to worry about.

Morphing aside, we had a very productive session re-finding our singular path in life. I say we, but really I spent a lot of time cuddling Tom and looking busy but, that's still helping Diane really, if you think about it.

It's always a pleasure to spend an hour in this garden and especially with such lovely people. Thank you team and look out for the next session and the opening of the garden to fundraise for the Hospice in June.

Easter SUNday!

Sunday 9th April 2023

Written by Laura Grant

4 intrepid Goodgymers spent an hour at Baltic Quay clearing away dead foliage and spreading new soil on the beds ahead of the garden open day for Bexley Hospice in June. As ever our work was supervised by Tom, the friendly Labrador! A great way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Garden on the Dock of the Bay

Sunday 12th February 2023

Written by Sarah M

A grey Sunday afternoon saw 7 GoodGym-ers gather for a tidying-up Community Mission at the hidden gem that is Ballast Quay Garden in Greenwich. A garden on the banks of the Thames with fantastic views over the docklands and Greenwich, Ballast Quay Garden is a tranquil spot in a busy area in East Greenwich, featuring plenty of greenery, sculptures and an impressive fig tree whose crops are in high demand by the local wildlife. After a quick briefing by our host, Diana, we set to work clearing leaves & litter, chipping away at those pesky but hardy inter-paving grasses & weeds, and trying very hard not to annoy too many earthworms. The time flew by as we compared notes on recent GoodGym tasks, upcoming events and how amazing the garden is in summer, to the tune of clippers whooshing along the Thames and waves breaking on the beach. The ultimate test of our work was an inspection by Tom, Diana’s dog, who wasn’t in the mood to pose for photos but did get lots of fuss from all involved and has definitely become quite the Greenwich GoodGym celebrity. Thanks to all involved and have a great week!

Blowin' in the wind

Sunday 15th January 2023

Written by Rachel Henry

A cold crisp Sunday afternoon brought a cheerful gaggle of GoodGymers together for a lovely community mission to end the week. The little Wharf Garden is a hidden haven amidst the bustling pubs and taverns of Greenwich and we caught many an eye of those wandering past, wondering who we were, why we were allowed in a private garden and why we were taking so many photos.

The task was to gather as many leaves as possible, weed between the paving slabs and generally have a good tidy up. After each getting a face full of leaves we learned the technique for dropping our handfuls, barrowfulls and bagfuls of leaves over the wall for the most part. It was great to have such a big group for this task and in true GoodGym style we got to task and by the end of our time the garden was looking much clearer. Big shout out to Anthony who joined us for his first community mission - great to have you along!

Tom, the much loved labrador didn't grace us with his presence this week but Lucy did build a relationship with a well fed worm so all was not lost.

After spending an hour doing lots of good we decided to reward ourselves with a little drink and proceeded to try three pubs before braving the outside of the Trafalgar Tavern, where we chatted until we started to not feel our fingers and toes and all headed on our way to enjoy the rest of our weekends.

Great job team!

Leaf it to us to Quay'p things tidy

Sunday 20th November 2022

Written by Julian Osman

On Sunday afternoon three Good Gymers ran to Ballast Quay in Greenwich to help out. We were met by Diane and her dog Tom, a Good Gym favourite.

The site has a big tree which had been shedding its leaves and it was our job to clean these up, especially as the steps around the shed were being made a little treacherous. We set about gathering and one of the nice things about clearing things up at Ballast Quay is that any organic material can be lobbed straight in to the river, although today saw the unexpected challenge of needing to throw the leaves in a way that didn't see them all blown straight back onto you.

45 minutes passed before we knew it, the vast majority of the leaves were floating off to Gravesend and the rain was starting so it was decided that it was time to wander off to the warmth.

I can see clearly now the moss has gone

Sunday 16th October 2022

Written by Rachel Henry

The task: clearing the path of moss, grass, overhanging trees, shrubs and virginia creeper

The crew: Jenny, Julian, Laura, Marta, Rachel and Tom the labrador

In short, we bossed it. We could see the paving slabs and the route down the path after an hour of weeding, trimming and being sat on by the dog. Job well done, team and thanks for an hour of your company - it's always a pleasure.

We'll be back to this lovely garden in a month to sweep up the autumn leaves so keep your eyes peeled for this!
