Tree mendous plant and re-cycle

Sun 28 Nov
Report written by Paul Salman

A few you good gym members came together to plant some trees in Mill Hill Barnet. The hundreds of trees were being planted as a memorial forest for the victims of COVID-19.

But of course planting new woodland is important in improving air quality, reduce flooding, improve water quality, and of course helping to remove carbon from the air.

Three of us cycled from Stephens house and gardens along an old railway line which emerged very near the site. We met others hard at work picking out the trees to plant at already specified locations. It was a cold beautiful day with bright sunshine so glorious conditions to plant new trees.

It was great to see lots of individuals, groups and young families getting stuck in to the planting. This is a truly an important investment for the future.

As a group we estimated we planted 15 to 20 trees before heading home. thank you for coming cycling / walking and doing some good!

We will be doing more of this in The New Year please join the community mission listed for tiny forests.

Helping a community Garden in Hampstead

Tue 23 Nov 18:45 pm
Phoenix Cinema, 52 High Road, London , N2 9PJ
Improve the gardens and get fit

Welcome to GoodGym Barnet! We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects in our area.

This week we will help the friends of a community garden usually preparing the ground or moving compost. It’s a lovely run along Mutton Brook so head torches would be useful. GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and it is often possible to walk to the task or meet at the venue. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

Food waste down, fashion sense up!

Sat 20 Nov
Report written by Daniel Mermelstein

Four goodgymmers cycled to Waitrose in Brent Cross and collected hundreds of pounds worth of surplus food that would otherwise have been thrown away.

We delivered it to the Mutual Aid group in Hendon, where neighbours come to make use of it.

Every day supermarkets have to dispose of tons of food that is still consumable but has reached its sell-by date. Through schemes like these they are able to donate it to local groups that then distribute it locally. It's a fantastic way to reduce food waste and help the environment.

We were glad to do our small bit and hope to do it again soon.

PS: And Paul had nothing to say about my attire this time!

Free food for everyone. Help reduce food waste in Barnet!

Sat 20 Nov 10:30 am
Waitrose, Brent Cross Shopping Centre, London, NW4 3FQ
We'll be helping to reduce food waste and participating in an exciting local initiative that brings people together around sharing food and helping each other

Mutual Aid Barnet collect surplus food from supermarkets and make it available to local people through their "Surplus Club".

This is not only for people who can't afford food, but for anyone who cares about minimising food waste. In fact, you can take some food with you at the end of the mission if you want!

Our task is to help Mutual Aid Barnet collect some of the surplus food for their Surplus Club.

We will be cycling to the Waitrose supermarket in Brent Cross (or you can join us there), collecting the food and delivering it to the Surplus Club in Hendon.

From Waitrose to Hendon is a ten minute cycle ride.

If your bike has paniers, please bring them. Otherwise bring a rucksack.

Please note that this mission involves cycling and carrying a load.

If you care about food waste and want to help reduce it, this task is for you!

Meals on wheels!

Sun 24 Oct
Report written by Paul Salman

Against tradition two Goodgym Runner‘s use their motor vehicles to collect and deliver food for the homeless charity together in Barnet. Breakfast and dinner collected from two different locations and delivered to a hotel in Golders Green. As the winter sets in more homeless people are expected to come in from the cold to seek shelter and food set up by this fantastic charity. With only one paid member of staff meals are prepared by the local churches and synagogues. Check out their website if you would like to support in anyway. https://www.togetherinbarnet.org/ Well done Kirsten! well done also to St Marys church who supplied breakfast and an evening meal made by Penny and Gaby.

Support the creation of a sustainable sensory garden in Finchley

Mon 31 Jan 18:45 pm
The Green Field, Finchley Way, London, N3 1AG
Improve the green space and habitat for wildlife

We will look to support the development of a sensory garden at Finchley Way open space Providing a sustainable habitat for pollinating insects and an enjoyable recreational area. Please sign up if you wish to support and get involved in creating this sensory garden. Activity dates to be advised.

Friends of Finchley Way Open Space became a registered charity in December 2020. Finchley Way Open Space which is a local green space, much of which had been neglected for many years.

This will be a rolling community mission.

A sensory garden is all about stimulating and engaging the five basic senses of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste’. To this end the area will need a mixture of plants that are visually attractive, have a strong fragrance, that rustle in the wind, that have leaves with different textures and that are edible. For edible we will probably use herbs to minimise maintenance. A key to sustainability will be to choose plants that are self-seeding or perennials and that will be sustainable in the face of climate change.

Pick up and deliver meals for the homeless of Barnet

Sun 24 Oct 18:00 pm
35 Hoop Ln,, London, NW11 8BS
Support homeless people in barnet

We will help together in Barnet moving food from volunteer houses in Finchley to the hotel in Golders Green that is hosting homeless people from Barnet.

You will need a CAR to do this mission. Upon delivering one of you could help in the distribution of meals.

We will confirm both addresses for collection and delivery nearer the time.

Ideally to share the workload we would need two cars and volunteers.

Together in Barnet's aim is to tackle homelessness in the London Borough of Barnet. The charity runs a night shelter within the local community to house rough sleepers from October to May each year. Together in Barnet works closely with the day centre, Homeless Action in Barnet, to provide for the needs of the most vulnerable in the Barnet community.
