Support the creation of a sustainable sensory garden in Finchley

We will look to support the development of a sensory garden at Finchley Way open space Providing a sustainable habitat for pollinating insects and an enjoyable recreational area. Please sign up if you wish to support and get involved in creating this sensory garden. Activity dates to be advised.
Friends of Finchley Way Open Space became a registered charity in December 2020. Finchley Way Open Space which is a local green space, much of which had been neglected for many years.
This will be a rolling community mission.
A sensory garden is all about stimulating and engaging the five basic senses of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste’. To this end the area will need a mixture of plants that are visually attractive, have a strong fragrance, that rustle in the wind, that have leaves with different textures and that are edible. For edible we will probably use herbs to minimise maintenance. A key to sustainability will be to choose plants that are self-seeding or perennials and that will be sustainable in the face of climate change.

Yogata go to Highgate woods to help.
A few Goodgym members came together on a beautiful spring morning to help at Highgate woods. We gathered near the CAFE for a chat and introduction. After a gentle warmup (just to get in the right mood) we headed off to do some forest work under the direction of Cindy the Ranger. We looked to use pre-cut Holly to block off paths and provide the border fencing to help encourage new growth and to protect wild flowers, young trees and shrubs. We also removed a dangerous wood construction ( denstruction!)and added it to our forest fencing. We finished in good time and did some gentle yoga in the dappled light below the trees. Thanks for coming and helping. You did good!

(Starter session) Help the Ranger at HighGate Woods.

All welcome old and new members. We are looking to help the Ranger in Highgate Woods who usual takes the time to show us around and is very knowledgeable. Possibly general assistance or Den destruction.
Meet at the café ( middle of the woods).
Short training session at the end for all those that want to take part. Stay for a drink & or lunch and hear more about what goodgym does. The Ranger is Cindy

Clay is a now a fully fledged GoodGym runner. They've just run to do good for the first time. They are out there making amazing things happen and getting fit at the same time.

Clay completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Clay was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Tree- mendous tiny plantings
It was very moving to see so many people turning up and getting stuck in so enthusiastically into planting Barnets first Tiny Forest. Six hundred trees and six huge bags of mulch went in in under two hours. The session with school kids in the morning was also brilliant and very heart warming. Here's a few pictures but they don't really do justice to the energy of the event. We will continue to look after our Tiny Forest with a little pics and citizen science in years to come.
Thank you for getting involved with a very worthwhile community mission!
Also give me a shout out to Clay on her first community mission with Goodgym Barnet.
and thank you to Kash for running the morning training session. my arms are still aching!

A Tiny Forest is a dense and rapidly growing native woodland in a small area. It will provide a protected habitat for wildlife, capture carbon, filter the air of harmful particulates and reduce flooding and soil loss.
Besides these important local effects, it is symbolic of our need to protect our wider environment and it is hoped it will provide an education and emotional engagement of our community. It’s also something that we will have to physically nurture as a group. Its a great fit for Goodgym!
These initiatives are gaining popularity across the UK, with organisations like EarthWatch and The Conservation Volunteers getting involved.
If you have ideas about how to promote this planting to the community please also get in touch. We want schools, community groups, artisans, news media and others to get involved.
Thanks to Daniel Mermelstein for introducing the idea to Goodgym Barnet.
