THE BIG MONDAY NIGHT TASK: Clearing Hogweed in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park

Mon 4 Jul 19:00 pm
Tower Hamlets Cemetary Park, The Soanes Centre, Southern Grove, Mile End, E3 4PX
We're back to the Cemetery Park to help clear more footpaths...

PLEASE WEAR LONG SLEEVES AND TROUSERS FOR THIS TASK.

The story behind the task

Manager Ken of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park has asked for GoodGymers to lend a hand clearing the footpath in this beautiful, well used park, as the park has suffered with a lower-than-usual supply of volunteers over the last couple of years.

What are we doing tonight, and why?

We’re heading to the wildflower meadow area known as Highglade in this evening’s task, where we’ll be dealing with the invasive, pesky Common Hogweed!

It’s essential to a park this size that a range of nectar-rich plants, such marigolds and yarrow, are allowed to flourish. These are the plants that foragers (pollinators) can really grab hold of.

The Common Hogweed is invasive, and needs many pairs of additional hands to prevent it taking hold.

We’ll be helping Ken, and the Cemetery Park team, a lot, by getting together in this beautiful spot this evening, to get stuck in to this rewarding task.

What you need to know

  • We'll meet at 7pm by the Southern Grove Entrance, just outside The Soanes Centre.

  • After grabbing gloves, we'll make our way to the pretty Highglade area of the park to make a start on tonight's clearing.

  • The park will supply gloves but please bring your own too. Please wear long sleeves and long trousers.

  • We have allowed 90 minutes for this task, but you can leave earlier if you need to!

The name’s Pond. James Pond.

Thu 30 Sep
Report written by Laura Williams

And so to Part II

A cool sized crew of 8 met Michael of Bethnal Green's Phytology and Margaret from Teesdale and Hollybush Tenants and Residents Association this evening, who came equipped with lanterns and quiche.

Tonight was Part II of our time creating the new pond with the Nature Reserve Team.

What's the story?

A sanctuary for any resident who would like to spend time in this open water, biodiverse area, an overhaul is now overdue, and many pairs of productive, active GoodGym hands over the last two nights (and during the weeks ahead - keep an eye out for next week's listings) is a bit of a godsend to this new, ambitious project. It means that interns and other volunteers are able to be distributed around other parts of this big project, and we're able to fill in the gaps (literally and metaphorically).

A workout-and-a-half

So tonight we picked up where Team Pit left off last night: we worked in two teams of four, shovelling mud and soil into barrows and wheeling it around the corner to the new wild meadow area. It was tough, it was constant... It was a workout-and-a-half for lats, obliques and cardiovascular systems. But we did it.

An hour and a half pretty much flew by - although not for our poor old forearms - but it was thoroughly enjoyable. We welcomed Rob, our first time GoodGymer (you did amazing, Rob!) and welcomed the return of our Charlotte, who we haven't seen for a while. And fantastic to see Rohan for his second night at the pond. Way to go on a two-nighter.

And Michael our main task owner for the evening was amazing: unstoppable, he set the bar pretty high for shovelling at quite the rate, while also wheeling at a pretty impressive pace, but was most keen to lead us to resident Eve's cake and quiche at the end of the session, where we sat in the small hut and replenished glycogen stores before heading off.

Cake and a bit of company

What a lovely, lovely evening. The rain was barely noticeable, the wind even less so: we just enjoyed one another's company, by lantern light, rounded off with some good old-fashioned baking. Lucky doesn't cut it.

Until next time.

GROUP RUN: Day 2 of Rebuilding the Pond at Bethnal Green Nature Reserve

Thu 30 Sep 18:10 pm
Bethnal Green Nature Reserve, Middleton Street, London, E2 9RR
On Day 2 of this amazing outdoor task, we'll be tackling the next stage of this big pond redevelopment...

What we'll be doing

  • We'll be meeting at Middleton Green at 6:10pm for those who fancy a pre-task workout and run. We'll then be running across the road to meet Margaret by the Nature Reserve to start the second part of our big pond task.

  • If you'd like to meet at the task, we'll be meeting Margaret at the Nature Reserve in Middleton St from 6:30pm.

  • We have allowed 90 minutes for this evening's task, but we may finish earlier.

Why so early?

  • Daylight! (this is a big new project, and we need to maximise the daylight left during the evening, so if you are able to sneak out of work a bit early...).

Moving manure with the Good Gym team!

Tue 31 Aug
Report written by Charlotte Fountaine

Our team of 4 adventured to Hackney City Farm with shovels, forks and lots of wheelbarrows. We moved animal manure from one end of the farm to the other. Moving the manure will help to keep the animal environment safe and clean, while also creating fertile soil for the area. We met some friendly goats while we were there.
