Hot pickings

Portsmouth Report written by Judy Knapp

The Hot Walls lived up to their name on a sunny October day - beautifully warm and sheltered.

Louisa, John, Aimee, Sarah and I enjoyed the sunshine as we scoured the beach for every beer cap, fishing line, plastic bottle top and random pieces of washed-up debris. After 30 minutes the beach seemed to be completely clean, so we headed out along Broad Street to 'fag butt city' (aka Spice Island)!

We collected every cigarette end and sweet wrapper from the seated viewing area and received a few thank-yous along the way.

Lots of litter in Hayling

Portsmouth Report written by Judy Knapp

Six of us gathered for a beach clean on Hayling Island, partway down the Hayling Billy Trail.

Rachel, Maura, Mel, Aimee and I were joined by visiting GoodGymer, Ben, all the way from GG Birmingham. Thanks for joining us, Ben - hope to see you at another Portsmouth Community Mission some time! And well done, Aimee, for Community Mission number 3!

Although there was very little dropped litter on the beach, unfortunately there was a lot of plastic and fishing debris caught in the seaweed. We only really scratched the surface of the huge quantity of litter on a short stretch of the beach. But in an hour we each collected a bagfull and enjoyed the September sun on Hayling Island.

Getting our vitamin sea

Portsmouth Report written by Jo Kitching

Another early Saturday morning start saw 11 of us meeting up at Eastney to start our litter pick. A big welcome back to Aimee who joined us for her 2nd community mission this morning. We split into 2 groups, Amiee, Angela, Kat, Jo, Sarah and Rajintha tackled the rubbish on the shoreline and Judy, Maura, Maxine, Mel and Rachel focused higher up on the beach.

Considering the weather has been warmer the rubbish wasn't as bad as it has been. Apart from the usual finds of bbqs, cans, bottle tops, sweet wrappers and fishing line and hooks. Interesting finds were a pair of sunglasses, Elsa from Frozen, and a weird long needle that we still don't know what it could be used for.

After the beach clean some of us headed into the sea for a dip, where we were joined by Jen fresh from her night shift and Rosie who was out on a run. Another fabulous morning with Goodgym.

Aimee completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Aimee was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Back to black 🖤

Portsmouth Report written by Katie Carew-Robinson (she/her)

Firstly welcome to Aimee and Amanda who joined us for their first GoodGym experience and got stuck straight in.

I'm very pleased to be able to report that we finished painting the railings around the church and they are all looking nice and black, shiny and matching!

We had many different conversation subjects tonight from bats to beetroot and carers to careers.

The vicar also looks after another church in Stamshaw and may have some more jobs for us in the future (not railing painting you'll be pleased to hear).
