TASK 1: Moving Mulch
Somehow Ed passed responsibility for this run report onto me.
Oh leaf it out - Ed
7 GG Yorkies ran to Greenfields Community Garden to help move bags of mulch, turn over a few veg patches and plant some artichokes. We quickly got word that the other group needed taller people to reach the decorations, cue many height related puns...
In the height of winter, having already completed York Parkrun, we knew it was going to be a giant stretch to get to the other side of York in time. But after a short walk to Ed's car we picked up the pace and even arrived early enough to get a sizable breakfast.
No we can't drive, every km counts! - Craig
We jumped to the task of moving the 40+ bags of leaves to the giant compost pile and quickly discovered they had bigger ideas for us. Fitting in another task was a tall order but we rose to the challenge, after all, the last task was bags of fun.
Ooo nature's all over me - Mel
After turning over a few veg patches (who knew cardboard was so good for worms), we planted some artichokes beneath think brambles (potential future task) and with a hop, skip and a jump we headed home again. Even Max has linked his Strava.
TASK 2: De-decorating Trees
6 GG Yorkies ran to Danesmead Wood (many straight after parkrun) to take down the Christmas decorations GG York had put up before Christmas. Freya quickly realised that all the tall people (many of whom had put up the decorations in the first place) had mysteriously all switched to task 1, leaving the more vertically challenged of us to jump, leap and climb to try and get them down!
Katie quickly proved that she had (in her words) evolved well, by getting a stick to hook under the loops and get them off the higher branches. It also proved to be an effective method of carrying many baubles at once!

Next step: fire! - A somewhat intimidating Katie
Meanwhile, Maddy has found her Christmas star she had put up the first time down and was thrilled that it had survived so well and could be used again. Once all the decorations were safely boxed up for next Christmas, we carried them through the wood (along the beautifully straight and even footpath). Along the way, Ellie spotted the opportunity for bonus good.
BONUS GOOD
The Friends of Danesmead Wood lamented that a member of the public had chopped down part of a tree, in an attempt to make the pathway more accessible. They had, unfortunately, left a stump in the middle of the path (which GG could do nothing about) and a huuuuge limb dangling in the tree. Good Feller Ellie quickly spotted a chance for destruction and volunteered the services of the assembled group, who quickly set to pulling, shoving, rocking and leaning on the limb to try and dislodge it. In the end, Carl went and got a bow saw and chopped it into smaller pieces. The chunks were pulled out of the canopy, carefully stacked at the side of the path and the victorious Yorkies ran home!
This is a small group of volunteers who try to mwke the wood a great place to use for everyone.
