Brashed off

York Report written by Vicky Hearson (she/her)

We began tonight's session by numbering off and naming an inspirational woman,in honour of international woman's day last Friday.

We then warmed up and headed out on the short run to Scarcroft Allotments which were just under 1km away.

We were met by Graheme and Claire and armed with heavy duty gloves. We then split into 3 teams and each had piles of brash to move to a location where it will be chipped later in the week. We had some good poses for the potential goodgym calendar of folk carrying logs.

The time quickly passed and a lot of distance covered. We met back at the shed for a group photo then headed round the corner for fitness. This week we got into pairs to do some hill reps on Scarcroft Hill.

Once everyone's heart rate was suitably raised we headed back to base.

Special thank you to the early birds who came along to clear a very littered alleyway before group run.

Mud on your face, you big disgrace, rolling your log all over the place

York Report written by Ed Woollard (He/Him)

Monday evening meant it's time for another GoodGym group run, and this one had everything that we love here in York. Logs, mud, digging and a pet dog were all on offer but before all that we needed to warm up on a chilly February evening. So this time, in honour of Johnny Cash who was apparently born on this day in 1932, we named our favourite black or at least very dark things and we had everything from Black Metal to Blackberries!

Vicky and the party pace crew set off early before Ed led a group, backmarked by Nikki, to join them. At the task we met Kristina from City of York Council as well as Jan from the Friends of Fishpond Wood, and Callum from Forestry England together with his dog Dylan. We were then led deeper into the woods to a particularly boggy area that will become a drier path through the woods in due time.

It was then time to get to work. Half the team armed themselves with spades and began digging a drainage trench, whilst the others began shifting logs to form the outline of what will become the path. There was some interesting log lifting going on with Martin favouring the over the shoulder look (one for the GG calender) and others preferring the rolling method

I've got a lady log 🪵- Abigail

The trench digging got boggier and the logs got heavier but the GGers were up for the challenge, albeit with some taking an occasional break to stroke Dylan the dog, and before long we'd run out of logs and were ready to head back to base for a spot of fitness.

Tonight's fitness involved two lines of GGers shifting a cone from the front to the back of their line through twisting their core or reaching up and squatting down. But it was no contest with Nick's team finishing comfortably ahead of Jenna's. Once all was said and done we said our goodbyes with some people heading to Dom's pub quiz, rasing money for Mind. Good luck in the quiz, guys 👍

Leafing it 'til the the last minute to bag more good deeds

York Report written by Ed Woollard (He/Him)

An epic turnout of 30 GoodGym Yorkies braved the soggy conditions to give us every chance of hitting our January challenge target of 500 good deeds. We started the night celebrating another milestone for Legendary Leanne who was completing her 1100(!!!) good deed. Well done Leanne. And then it was time for a rather special cheer for Louise who was presented with her trophy for winning this year's Sean Coxhead Inspiring Individual award 🏆. It felt extra special to present this award to a York GoodGymer given the meaning behind the it. Well done Louise. We're all so proud of you 👏

Then it was off to the tasks...

Does going to the pub count as a good deed - Max

Ed led one group to Back Park where we welcomed newcomer Lucy who is apparently a friend of Vicky's and so helped her tick off another January Challenge Bingo Square.

The team got to work shifting leaves, bagging them up and litter picking to make the park a lot more tidy than it was. Taskowner Kristina was suitably impressed with the number of bags we filled, but felt like she might have some explaining to do to those whose job it is yo collect them all the next day!

The debate also continued around how many holes are in a straw and took a turn that is probably not suitable for the run report, but needless to say we're no nearer a conclusion.

Mitch led the other team out to Heslington Lane and had this to say...

We braved the rain to go to Heslington Road to help St Nicks continue their task of turning a grassed verge into a wildflower meadow. The thought is turning over the grassed verge will create the ideal habitat for wildflowers, which in turns will help the biodiversity. All good stuff.

We didn't let the rain and claggy mud deter us. We got our shovels stuck in and got to work. After half an hour of graft, we managed to dig out a large area. Job well done!

Then it was back to CVS for a spot of fitness. This time featuring game that was a mix between ring of roses and touch rugby. Everyone seemed to get the gist of it pretty quickly and kudos was given to the level of danger involved!
