Planting trees with the South Downs Eco Cooperative

We'll improve the health of the local landscape, making it more pleasant for locals to enjoy, and helping to sequester some carbon to combat climate change.

South Downs Eco Cooperative

Please note that this community mission has been cancelled.

We'll be planting tree 'whips' (very baby trees) alongside other volunteers with the South Downs Eco Cooperative near the Devil's Dyke. I suggest wearing or bringing along some wellies and clothes you don't mind getting dirty as it could be muddy work! We are also requested to bring along our own spades if we have them, and do bring a water bottle and a snack although I think there will be tea and some biscuits available. Although I've listed the task as being for four hours, you can leave whenever you need to, although other volunteers will keep going until all whips are in the ground. Hope to see you there!

Additional helpful information: How to get there: - Cycling, it may seem like it's a tough ride up to the downs from Brighton but actually the hill is slow and steady and what's better is that it's all downhill on the way home! Takes upto 40 minutes from Brighton station up to the Farm but only 25 on the way back.

  • Bus: The 77 bus will stop at the top of the road (5 mins away). Get off at 'Brighton and Hove Golf Club' and then walk down towards the golf club turning left just before for the farm. There is a service which leaves Churchill Square at 9.07am, 10.23am, 11.38am, 12.53. The service running home leaves Brighton and Hove Golf Club at 10.50am, 12.05, 13.20, 14.35, 15.50, 17.05 and18.20 so there is time for a roast at the Devils Dyke (which is the final stop on the 77's bus route) or a walk afterwards if you fancy it. Alternatively the 27 runs very regularly from town and will take you to Tongdean Lane West and then you can cross the two roundabouts to the right (anti clockwise) and in minutes you are up onto the scenic downs for a lovely 25 minute walk to the farm. This route will not show up on google maps so I tend to search for 'Hilltop Cafe' (which has some delicious food if you're hungry) and then google again for the walk from there. All in all this will take around 45 minutes.

  • Walking takes 1 hour 15 minutes from Brighton, a beautifully scenic route once you get up onto the downs.

  • Taxi is £13 from Brighton Station so if there are several of you it's not much to split and will only take 12 minutes.

  • Driving is least preferable due to limited parking on site however there are also two car parks on devils dyke road and another carpark at Devils Dyke - although I believe that one has a two hour maximum stay. If you do need to drive and would like to park on our land please send a whatsapp to Louise on 07871612611 to see if you can reserve a space, and liftshare where possible.

Toilets There are toilets that you can use in the farm house. The two doors to the left inside the front door are both toilets.

Dogs You are welcome to bring dogs but please keep an eye on them and where possible keep them away from the house which is home to two cats.

Tools If you have tools you can bring e.g. forks, spades, gardening gloves please do bring those along and label them with tape and a sharpie so that you know they are yours.

How are you getting there?

Hi! I saw this morning that this event was also scheduled for tomorrow morning - just wondering whether it's been cancelled or if it's still going ahead? My bf and I would love to join tomorrow morning if it's still going ahead, but can't see any information about it anymore?
