Report written by York runner
A last minute change of plan saw 28 GG Yorkies run to Greenfields Garden!
After our original task was postponed, Louise at Greenfields stepped in and offered us a brilliant range of tasks to fill our #redmonday, rescuing everyone from a 90 minute fitness session in a hundred degrees celcius.
New runner, Katherine, turned up extremely well prepared with red gardening gloves to match all the t-shirts, so she was given extra kudos before we set off on a steady pack run, dodging many tourists who had descended on York.
On arrival at Greenfields, Louise was well-prepared with a long jobs list:
Mitch didn't want to be involved in picking any of the wrong edible stuff so he grabbed a hammer and a can of nails which was - ironically - a 'smash' tin. I decided to stay well clear of all the smashing and instead gave a short safety briefing to the scythers, advising everyone to stay well clear of the scything arc of doom.
The plums are good when they're dark and squishy
There was a lot of excellent picking going on as well as some gentle plum squeezing, and it has to be said there was a little bit of munching going on too. One person who wasn't munching much was Loz, who just had a permanent massive grin on his face for finding the biggest bits of veg.
Jenna had hit the jackpot and found an amazing blackcurrant bush which took about five people to fully strip it. Then Katie, Beth and Karen very neatly sorted all the fruit and veg into different containers ready to go to the Food Poverty Alliance.
The raised bed was filling up quick and once it was full, Louise set another challenge which to relocate as much of the pile of soil into another pile of soil in a different part of the garden. I like to think she did this for her own entertainment but there's probably an excellent reason. With just ten minutes left on the clock, there was a bit of speed digging happening whilst everyone else turned to raking duties to clear as much of the scythed grass as possible.
CORE SESSION!
We enjoyed a little bit of core fitness in the garden after the task, practising our perfect planking and working through a variety of mountain climber variations. After some partner sit-ups we did a team planking challenge where Mitch volunteered to be the commando and crawled through the plank tunnel before the run back to base.
Massive thanks to Premier Inn for leaving us loads of cold water - much needed!
