Wandering around at Wandon Park

Luton Report written by Dani C

This afternoon, 2 GoodGymmers made their way to help out at a litterpick organised by Friends of Wandon Park. Along with the other volunteers, we cleared a total of 16 bags of rubbish from the park and surrounding wooded areas. This will make a huge difference to the animals and people who visit the park and keeping the area tidy should encourage people to bin their litter going forward, or so we hope!! It was great to meet Anthony as well, hope to see you again soon! Great job!

Making Hay While The Sun Shines

Luton Report written by David Mansfield

We welcomed Alkesh aka Alky to his first session here in People's Park as we combined the regular monthly litter pick with a good upper body workout in the orchard, raking up the cut grass into piles of hay, bagging them up and dragging it all up the hill to be spread under the trees.

The whole point of removing the hay is to prevent it decomposing and enriching the soil in the meadow area. Nutrient hungry weeds will therefore struggle to grow and leave space for the more desirable true grassland species that are better adapted for poorer soils. A big win for biodiversity!

Flame as it ever was

Luton Report written by Luton runner

Six of Goodgym's finest turned out on Sunday morning bringing their energy, agility and enthusiasm to the slash-and-burn party that is the hallmark of a Luton and Dunstable Conservation Volunteers session on Bradgers Hill, Luton.

We welcomed Rachel who came along to join us on her first Goodgym task

Tooled up with loppers and hand saws the team steadily worked through the prickly and tangly overgrown and thorny (astonishingly, no blood was shed) scrub, to open up a clearing and let in more light for the grasses beneath to grow and thrive.

The bonfire exceeded all expectations as was evidenced by some rosy complexions and sweat beaded brows. Tea break with biscuits and home baked apple cake went down a treat.
